In this video I highlight the different ways ADHD symptoms tend to express themselves in girls. For a better sense of ADHD in general check out "How to Know if You Have ADHD:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cx13a2-unjE
To clarify: I am not suggesting that there is a "girl" or a "boy" form of ADHD. Either gender can have the hyperactivity component, and either gender can be primarily inattentive. In this video I talk about what is more common; however, it's important that we learn to recognize both forms in both genders.

The only reason why I got dinosed with ADHD in 4th grade was because I was getting checked to see if I was ausitic because my dad noised that I act a lot like my older twin brother and he can’t talk and has ausitic and my mom told be something that I noticed that somone with ausitic wouldn’t know would be when I was getting dignoised my mom told me that I knew what was going on by when I said I didn’t have austum and somone with ausitic wouldn’t know what’s going on so my dad was wrong
2:25 I got diagnosed with depression two years ago because my ADHD surpassed my ability to deal with it (before getting diagnosed and trying to learn how to deal with it). The antidepressants made it worse, as they made me lethargic, and therefore made it even harder to concentrate, but I unfortunately had an inept doctor who just kept upping the dose. Wound up caught in a cycle of attention and grades slip, depression gets worse, dose goes up, attention and grades slip... Finally figured out he wasn't good at his job and quit at the beginning of this year. Got diagnosed with ADHD and switched meds a month ago. I'm still trying to recover from the absolute self-esteem crush these past years have been, but watching things like these and realising I'm not alone helps. Thank you.
Most of the traits she mentioned describes me so well But on the opposite gender. I'm female and I was always causing trouble in a boyish way, one of the reason the teachers ALWAYS told me to behave while saying "boys will be boys" bs.
Yeah, I fall heavily into the ADD (yeah, I'm old enough that this is what we called it) or inattentive end of the spectrum... in fact, when I was first diagnosed, the doctors and therapists couldn't even decide if it was ADD or depression, and I'm pretty sure the only reason I was diagnosed at all is because I had severe asthma growing up, and my mom's first reaction to any problem had become "ask a doctor". I didn't recognize my own symptoms in most of the books we'd find until some of them started including chapters about how ADD/ADHD presents in girls.
Thank you for making this video. With your help I was able to clearly see that my wife needed to seek treatment for ADD. I have ADHD myself, and had suspected that she had it too, but your videos just perfectly helped drive the point home and I was able to frame this discussion in a way she could relate to.
My 5 yr old hasn’t been diagnosed with ADHD, but I’ve known she has it since she was 18 mos old. She just behaves so much like her father, who does have an ADHD diagnosis. The older she gets, the more obvious it becomes that she’s dealing with ADHD. Our problem, as you’ve mentioned, is that her problems tend to happen at home. We have to have a consensus with the school, where her anxiety manifests via being super shy and quiet. They don’t see an issue. At home, she can’t focus on anything without a screen; she fights with her siblings constantly; she can’t remember rules that have been repeated to her daily for the last 3 years; she is extremely emotional (which I foresee as a future depression diagnosis, also like her father); and she absolutely can’t stay still for even a second. Your videos are helping me confirm what I already know, and I’m glad I’m not crazy and being overly worried. Thank you for this channel.
I had A D H D. When I was a kid.
And then I woke up this morning and put my head phones on!!
Started cleaning up the house!!!
And then I started to dance. And I was breaking a sweat!
And then I was done breakdancing. And I saw the kitchen that I was cleaning. And BOOM. It was messy. Because I let my self. Get taken over the music!!!!
😳. Although. I think I opend my 3rd eye! Don't know what 3rd eye is?
Search it up. (3rd eye)
Besides that. I'm always. Fast hearted beaded!!
oh well. 😖 I was cleaning up the house. And while I was cleaning it up. I was dancing and. Moving like a fucken worm while I was cleaning it up?
Pretty sure I have the combined type. My mum won't get me tested because she compares me to her male ADHD students(hyperactivity) that are the same age as me (she's a teacher). Therefore, I have no clue what to do about this. Any advice?
I hope I can get help soon I was diagnosed with adhd and ocd from a really young age took all sorts of medicines that made me feel awful barely got therapy and have so many symptoms of other conditions so odds are I have something else, and I’m out of high school and have to stress about school work jobs money so on and so forth and I’ve told my mom for yearssssss literally since middle school since I got off meds in elementary that I need help and I still haven’t got it I’ve only recently realized a lot of people I thought were helping were making it worse and had no idea what it was like for me, no way I can convince parents to get me help so I will probs have to wait years to be financially stable and independent to be able to and it’s scary especially hearing about people who didn’t get help and were worse off and noticed it in school home work etc I don’t know what to do 😰
I’m 24 and I’m just now realizing that I might have ADHD. Honestly it makes so much sense as to why I’ve had so many struggles but also disheartening that no one else detected it until now. Thank you for this video ♥️
I’m a girl and I was diagnosed when I was around five I also have anxiety slight dyslexia and bad insomnia it also makes me talk fast and slightly slured cause I’m a alwase worried I’ll forget what I want to say before I say it it’s a nightmare
My youtube path tonight is highly entertaining to me.
I've just began thinking about if i might (most likely do) have ADHD. So i learn about it and break stereotypes. And so i did with Aspergers. For girl/woman.
For once in my life things are falling in place and make fricking sense. ADHD, Lack of mental discipline, Asperger's, depression, low self-esteem. etc.
And also why no one ever noticed or wanted to believe me or even just be open minded.........
Damn i love those internets!
I hate people. They treat ADHD like a joke or act like we are dumb. I’ve been diagnosed and I’m on medication. I also I have a learning disorder plus my family are talking about me have OCD. Fight me bisk
I have ADHD I’m not self diagnosing I actually was diagnosed and my parents had me take medication for it and a lot of this is true for me except the fact about a lot what you about both boys and girls and they’re ummmmmm what was it..... oh well but I really.....WHERE WAS I GOING WITH THIS GEEZ XD
I feel jealous of those kids whose parents actually listen to what they have to say instead of ignoring them and acting like everything is okay. More needs to be done in schools to help us ADHD/ADD'ers out. If I had received the help that I had needed at a young age my life would be so much better.
I think I have ADHD. Or lack of Vitamin D. Oooor anything ELSE that causes depressive moods, high stress level, bad sleeping habits, no selfcontrol, constant unhappyness... I could go on. Buuut my parents won't listen so yeah. I am honestly curious as to how many mental diseases go unnoticed. I have 6 younger siblings, there's no way there's not SOMETHING. I suspect my sister has Dyslexia or something. My brother might have ADHD, symtoms are there... but nobody knows anything.
I'm only 11 I don't know mutch about my syemtomes p.s. not good at spelling to :) well I think my ADHD came with sensory processing disorder and deppresion and I preety sure sensory processing desoreder is ADHD I'm not 100% sure
I was 5 or 6 when I was diagnosed with ADHD and I've recently started thinking more about it so thank you for making these videos. (I'll admit it took me way too long to finish that sentence because I was looking at everything YouTube is now recommending to me that's also from your channel.)
I was one of the original girls to get diagnosed as ADD at 14 in 1993 and put on amphetamines. I still take them at age 41. You will have a hard time in life BUT don't give up. Don't use it as an excuse but also cut yourself some slack. Parenting and being a wife is much harder for us so be sure you marry someone who is understanding. I am clean but I do have my piles of books and papers around the house. My husband has accepted this and we've come to an agreement as to which areas I can keep them so we are both happy.
Did you know ADHD is now considered on the Autism spectrum? I definitely have autistic attributes which my husband lives with everyday. I'm on the lower end of the spectrum. So if you have a weird attachment to your books or can't get off your routines without having an internal meltdown which may come to the outward surface, you are probably on the spectrum and don't just have a difficult time concentrating.
What happens if you don't take your meds? Do you fall asleep easily at anytime or anyplace? You may gave a condition called Narcolepsy, which doctors prescribe amphetamines for too.
If you have conditions like these you probably have what is called the MTHFR Gene. People with this gene don't detox properly so they get contaminated with heavy metals which just gets worse with age. Get tested for this gene at www.mthfrdoctors.com and just a word of caution - vaccines are not good for people with this gene. Just keep this in mind when you have children one day. You may be able to spare them the problems in life we had to deal with neurologically.
Oh my! I relate to the piles! Only they are clothing. I never knew that ADD and ADHD were related to the spectrum. I don't know for sure if I have ADHD but my husband's diagnosed with ADD. We both display similar symptoms, especially inattentive. "Were you listening?" "Ooops". Or (Asks question) (silence) "I was reading this thing, can't talk".
I have dyslexia and I think I have ADHD. I am a girl and I have ALOT of trouble with focusing in school. I show all the symptoms of ADHD in girls but I just don’t know who to tell and how to tell them. I’ve been trying to hint it at my mum but I don’t think she’s getting it. I was wondering if u could help me?
Im a girl. I have the inattentive type. I spent 27 years actively hiding my ADD symptoms (that I didnt know was bc ADD ofc) before I got my diagnosis, when we tried to figure out my depression, anxiety and burn out symptoms (from ”doing nothing”). Now getting the proper treatment, my whole life has changed including me as a person to an extent. I dont put any energy in hiding my ADD and instead focus on tackling life WITH my ADD. I didnt know my life could be this fun! Now instead of ”locking up” my symptoms inside, Im letting them out, not worrying about them and that others clearly can see how ”not normal” they are, and I appear more hyperactive with ”typical” ADHD traits. I love my new free life where I get to show my struggles and get help with them instead of hiding them and pretending everythings fine.
I'm 31 and I try to hide but I cant/ everyone asked me why I'm sohyper all the time and all and in school I had to take medication, I stop doing high school and my grades went way down I ended up graduting with a 2.0 or something I think.
A few days ago,my friend who had ADHD started listing all her ADHD symptoms. She said to say”me too” if I have that particular symptom. The reason why is because I was telling her I think I have ADHD.So we did that, and I have every symptom she listed that she had except for ONE!!Do you think I have ADHD?Me and my friend think I do,and I want to know what everyone else thinks.(btw I’m 12) Thanks
Thanks for bring this out for us ADDer's. I was diagnosed with a learning disorder since I was in first grade. I'm 44 now and I'm feeling like im a failure. My wife gets irritated when I'm not able to remember anything. My wife sent your channel to me.
my therapist told me about this channel. I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression at a young age and that's what I was treated for. As I got older I began to struggle a million times more with EVERYTHING. I went to a new doctor and found out I have severe ADHD. Your videos are SO informative and give me a better idea of what's going on in my brain. Thank you!!!!!!
I have ADD/ADHD both and over the years it’s been hard, but I have been blessed with a supportive family that loves me and will do anything to help me. It’s hard to deal with my mind without medication because I also have anxiety and depression. My mind is literally chaos without medicine and therapy and outlets.
Is it just me or does this another time some has called me a girl on the internet is there something wrong with I don't know what to think is real and a girl bullyed9for looking at a shiny unicorn on the teachers she thought I was looking at her and I tried nice words but nope do you have advice
I didn't get diagnosed until I was 55. I just laughed and said "That explains a lot". I have spent my life getting in trouble for behaviors that I couldn't help. I am more comfortable in my skin now that I understand what is happening in my brain. Thanks
I make n sell jewerly pendants ( n other items ) n practicing my guitar.. Angelsartncraftcorner fb n instagram...but have trouble motivating doing them n i enjoy them...n tried the rpg ADD apps didnt help much...
I am 21 years old and I have been diagnosed with many mental conditions growing up including bipolar depression, GAD, OCD and a math disability. My younger siblings have been diagnosed with the severest level of ADHD that is recorded. My grandma has been too. My mom is super educated on adhd because of this and finally brought it up to me that I could’ve been miss diagnosed growing up, which has led me to make appointments for testing specifically for adhd. I am learning more about girls with adhd and I am appalled at how this was probably missed for 18 years...I am excited to hopefully have some answers and help in treating and dealing with my brain.
I went to my doctor to be diagnosed and a student doctor came in before my normal one when he came in he kept asking me “do you interrupt your friends do they say you interrupt them” and before I could answer he interrupted me 🤦🏻♀️ he kept asking me random questions that didn’t have to do with adhd like “have you ever smoked or had alcohol” I was 10 at the time and had no reference to his questions luckily my doctor came in around 15 minutes after and corrected the student
Wow, this is really helpful! I'm just coming to terms with the idea I might have ADHD after facing difficulties at work I thought were due to dyslexia. I'm looking to sort through a "proper" diagnosis whilst updating the dyslexia diagnosis. Tough to come to terms with but your videos are really inspirational, and I feel less "weird" now! 😁
I love this video. I never thought about the differences between boys and girls with ADHD before. When I speak to my female friends, they were diagnosed later in life, compared to my male friends who were diagnosed much earlier.
Omg you are amazing! I found your channel while searching for a video to explain to my 8yo daughter what ADHD is. She isn't diagnosed, but I have severe ADHD and she is going through the same things I did in school. And her 1st and 2nd grade teacher (same teacher, 2 years), who has a PhD in child psychology, agrees that yes she has it and no, a doctor doesn't need to be involved because she already knowsmwhat I know about living with ADHD and she will learn more and her symptoms will be more manageable in time. I was so glad to hear that, because medication was NOT the cure for me. It made me dead inside... I won't medicate her.
Speaking of which, why is it that so often medication does not help with ADHD symptoms?
At 36, I am no longer bouncing off the walls but I do have the racing thoughts associated with ADHD. It's definitely not a boy thing or a girl thing but it's worth discussing that we all can experience symptoms differently.
