To sound like Mick Mars on a budget I belive I would suggest a Jet City JCA22H and some lynchbacks in a 2x12 or 4x12

Your guitar is so out of tune.. Could only watch about 30 seconds... FF.. His tone is simple.. Modded Marshall.. One stack dry.. The other with about 20 ms delay.. Panned L/R

Why no link to the awesome Kramer?

For a real in depth look at Mick Marr's tone and how he got it, check out the yt channel CIRCLE OF TONE. This guy totally nails it and he does some real Sherlock investigation into the gear and studio technique, really worth a look. He does loads of other artists as well. And im in no way affiliated with the channel, its all mho.
Tate Thompson (1 month ago)
I owned a ‘76 Les Paul Custom that was Micks. It was wired for open volume and had a super distortion in bridge, t-top in the neck with cover on.

Holy shit Jack Sparrow, you wish you were alive in '89? I feel old now. Good job though.
Modern Rebellion (1 month ago)
I think it’s hard to get Mick’s sound bc he makes a lot of modifications on his gear, all by himself. I believe Nikki said once that Mick used to spent hours changing stuff on his guitar and amps till the sound was right, kind of a guitar geek. Great vid anyway

Slightly cocked wah on all the time. Micks secret sauce. He’s never admitted it tho. You’ll never get his mids without it.

Jack O'Neill (1 month ago)
Great video man. You really broke down the components of Mick's tone which is nice and nasty. I've admired what he's done for years and I've taken a few pages from his book in crafting my own tone. I read recently online that Richard Fortus of GN'R managed to acquire Mick's most treasured Marshall amp, supposedly his main work horse that he used on the early Motley records. It makes sense because Rich has a killer tone and now we know why. Because Fortus coveted the sound so much, he got Voodoo amps to clone Mick's Marshall. It's available as a modded V-Rock amp. So, for those who just can't get enough Mars, they can track down a Fortus Voodoo and they're right in the Motley wheelhouse! http://www.voodooamps.com/home/News/tabid/943/ctl/ArticleView/mid/2219/articleId/56/Richard-Fortus-of-GnR-The-Dead-Daisies-talks-about-his-Rig-Voodoo-Amps.aspx

Good video, enjoyed that, and a good few tips on how Mick got his tone, well done Dagan, could easily see the enthusiasm in the vid.
Anthony Blanco (1 month ago)
You could buy a Mars owned Marshall at Voltage on Sunset pretty cheap in the 90's.
JezBollah 667 (1 month ago)
And most of megadeths backline and early bc rich guitars at pawn shops scattered all throughout Los Angeles! Lol
Dave Hendricks (1 month ago)
Not even close to his tone !

Found a Kramer tele on reverb.... but you can keep your nuts, but I’ll take one finger.
GuitarsAre LikeStupid (1 month ago)
Great, someone who wasn't even alive during the first few Motley Crue records, getting a Mick Mars tone out of the new, Chinese-made (?) Marshall copies. Pass.
JezBollah 667 (1 month ago)
Marshall copies? Fuck guitarists believe in the dumbest shit, even long after they've been completely debunked as fairytales. You don't understand how amps like that actually work do ya so you keep believing the same dumb shit forever like you do.
Patrick Kowalski (1 month ago)
I think Mick uses tortex 1.14 mm. He’s had the classic tortex saying on them and in purple and black colors
Stephen Gray (1 month ago)
slash ,i as well,i find picking much better when fast and moveing with the heavier pick ,slash give that advice,i dont care what i pick up i do better with 1.14 tortex purple than anything else
Stephen Gray (1 month ago)
mick uses 1.14 purple tortex same thing slah uses u r right

BC Rich warlock.. your welcome,, and he used a talk box also.. like frampton
JezBollah 667 (1 month ago)
He also used a lot of Kramers as well, especially in the motley Crüe era. In fact, that's all I've ever seen him play in those days actually.

That I’ve been as sounds like shit should’ve stuck with the Charvel
Phil Dem (1 month ago)
Chorus ??? On the girls girls girls tour and after you see a eventide H3000 in his rack whitch sure does chorus BUT is also renowed To be used in the wet-dry-wet setup for detuning. The trick is few cents lower pitch one side, dry center, few cents upper pitch the other side, amount to taste. Like EVH, Haggar era. Three amp mixed also help the thickening! Oh by the way, good playing ! Cool riffs rundown 😎🤘
Mike McHan (1 month ago)
Thanks Phil Dem. I've been saving up for a third amp and an ABC splitter as it is but changing the pitch a tad here and there is something I never considered.
Marc Frieder (1 month ago)
Yes Carlos you right. This guy play good but i think in under kokaine and is better to him he go listen CD to Motley Crue
wet water (1 month ago)
I'm rolling with a 89 kramer focus 3000 and a B-52 LG200AS head and B-52 cab to match, I can get a pretty damn good girls girls girls era tone but I'll never be dead on.
Chris Hopkins (1 month ago)
"His rack gear grew more and more" - his other "gear" probably grew more and more too! :)

With a shredder yell, it grew more, more, moooore!
Chris Hopkins (1 month ago)
I'm sure there was a fixed wah pedal on the Looks that Kill riff originally
WillyVonHalen (1 month ago)
He also used the Soldano SLO 100
JezBollah 667 (1 month ago)
WillyVonHalen I guess you're right then. I'd never even noticed one back then and let's be honest, they're pretty hard to miss in a world that is just all black and black! Lol. A good mate of mine swears by em though and I trust his opinion so they must be something special.
WillyVonHalen (1 month ago)
The SLO 100 was released in 1987. Mars used them live since. The Rivera Bonehead 100w.
JezBollah 667 (1 month ago)
Did they even exist back then!?!?

Mick has more powerful sound..you're too far from there
captainwhizz (21 days ago)
A whole bunch of amps, a whole bunch of guitar tracks, and people like Bob Rock producing do make a difference. Funny that.
Ryan McDermott (1 month ago)
carlos rapalo it’s not the same because he’s inside(being quiet) and doesn’t have a full wall setup of Marshall cabinets to boost his sound
carlos rapalo (1 month ago)
You are not even close to sound like him , you don't even show the pedals he uses or used .. you play his songs not too bad but show nothing you intended to..

Marshall should make a JCM 'Mick'hundred

Girls girls girls, live wire, come on & dance, too fast for love, on with the show, shout at the devil, too young to fall in love, bastard, looks that kill, louder than hell, home sweet home, city boy blues, smokin' in the boys room, girls girls girls (again xD), wild side, you're all i need, kickstart my heart, dr feelgood, same ol' situation, without you, she goes down, hooligan's holiday, hell on high heels, saints of Los Angeles Might be missing a few, but the classics were played :) great video, massive info on Mars' "secret" tone. This is damn close if not spot on :)

what year is the Kramer?
JezBollah 667 (1 month ago)
Around 86 ish!? Maybe a little earlier, they weren't around for that long really.
Stephen Meredith (2 months ago)
Almost as long as the movie. 😂
Djarra (2 months ago)
Mick's Les Paul had the pickups rewound by J.M. Rolph at some point early on, possibly before Mötley, he still uses J.M. Rolph pickups to this day.

well done and fun to watch! sounds very accurate.
Ron Gillespie (2 months ago)
Please forgive me, no disrespect intended, but it does not sound even close to his tone. Sounds very muddy. Like a cheap amplifier.
JezBollah 667 (1 month ago)
Maybe the fact that it's not highly compressed and boosted in a studio and has heaps of white noise recorded in an open room like it is here, could have a lot more to do with it then it may seem anyway.
dollysinn (2 months ago)
Uses more gain than that.
