For a real in depth look at Mick Marr's tone and how he got it, check out the yt channel CIRCLE OF TONE. This guy totally nails it and he does some real Sherlock investigation into the gear and studio technique, really worth a look. He does loads of other artists as well. And im in no way affiliated with the channel, its all mho.
I think it’s hard to get Mick’s sound bc he makes a lot of modifications on his gear, all by himself. I believe Nikki said once that Mick used to spent hours changing stuff on his guitar and amps till the sound was right, kind of a guitar geek. Great vid anyway
Someone else who wears the same stoker hat covering his huge curly hair, aviator glasses and leather pants who uses the WAH in situ as part of his tone but wouldn’t admit it either... his ‘59 with Alnico V pups.!
Great video man. You really broke down the components of Mick's tone which is nice and nasty. I've admired what he's done for years and I've taken a few pages from his book in crafting my own tone. I read recently online that Richard Fortus of GN'R managed to acquire Mick's most treasured Marshall amp, supposedly his main work horse that he used on the early Motley records. It makes sense because Rich has a killer tone and now we know why.
Because Fortus coveted the sound so much, he got Voodoo amps to clone Mick's Marshall. It's available as a modded V-Rock amp. So, for those who just can't get enough Mars, they can track down a Fortus Voodoo and they're right in the Motley wheelhouse!
Marshall copies? Fuck guitarists believe in the dumbest shit, even long after they've been completely debunked as fairytales. You don't understand how amps like that actually work do ya so you keep believing the same dumb shit forever like you do.
Chorus ??? On the girls girls girls tour and after you see a eventide H3000 in his rack whitch sure does chorus BUT is also renowed To be used in the wet-dry-wet setup for detuning. The trick is few cents lower pitch one side, dry center, few cents upper pitch the other side, amount to taste. Like EVH, Haggar era. Three amp mixed also help the thickening!
Oh by the way, good playing ! Cool riffs rundown 😎🤘
WillyVonHalen I guess you're right then. I'd never even noticed one back then and let's be honest, they're pretty hard to miss in a world that is just all black and black! Lol. A good mate of mine swears by em though and I trust his opinion so they must be something special.

Girls girls girls, live wire, come on & dance, too fast for love, on with the show, shout at the devil, too young to fall in love, bastard, looks that kill, louder than hell, home sweet home, city boy blues, smokin' in the boys room, girls girls girls (again xD), wild side, you're all i need, kickstart my heart, dr feelgood, same ol' situation, without you, she goes down, hooligan's holiday, hell on high heels, saints of Los Angeles Might be missing a few, but the classics were played :) great video, massive info on Mars' "secret" tone. This is damn close if not spot on :)
Maybe the fact that it's not highly compressed and boosted in a studio and has heaps of white noise recorded in an open room like it is here, could have a lot more to do with it then it may seem anyway.
