A prequel to the 1979 classic The Black Stallion--a family drama that presents the horse's adventures with a young girl named Neera, who has been separated from her father in Arabia by WWII. Left alone in the desert, she befriends the wild colt whom she names Shetan. Once reunited with her father, however, Neera remains haunted by the images of the lost horse in the desert--one of a few stallions of legend, rumored to be born of the sands, sired by the night sky, drinkers of the wind. My name is Ashley Jackson! I am a 16-year-old recording artist, actress, and senior in high school! I created this project simply as a young black girl interested in positive messages. In my Honors English IV course, I have dedicated a substantial amount of time to reflecting on being an African-American female in the 21st century. I realize that we have been pushing now, more than ever, to illuminate the inner and outer beauty and complexity of our experiences. #BlackGirlMagic must be depicted on an even larger scale! I would like to contribute to the portfolio of progressive images, following trailblazers such as Mara Brock Akil, Ava Duvernay, Jada Pinkett Smith, Shonda Rhimes, Angela Bassett, Oprah Winfrey, and others. As a young black girl growing up in this media focused and driven society, I understand that one of the ways that I can ensure that our stories are told, is to create them, share them, and support them. This #BlackGirlMagic project invites you to participate! To learn more about the project visit: www.blackgirlmagicproject.org

Today teenage black braided hairstyles are a popular style amongst our young African American girls. What many of them don’t realize is that braids have a long history that can be traced back many years. This article will follow a bit of the history of braids in our African American culture. In African history, braids were a way to express kinship, ethnicity, religion, and age. Many of these things have been lost in transition of slavery and our native homeland of Africa. Styling has become a huge factor now. It’s all about the look and has nothing to do with kinship or religion. From the 70’s to the 1980’s braids were not that popular as Afro’s and the Jheri Curl took over. It wasn’t until the mid 1990’s that things started to pick back up. Things have been rocking ever since. Star athletes like “Iverson”, movie stars and rappers have pushed it all to another level. Subscribe to get more updates and latest amazing styles. "No matter what accomplishments you make, somebody helped you." -Althea Gibson The myth of the strong Black woman is reinforced to young Black girls daily. Not only is it promoted through images on television and lyrics in music, we are often modeled such behaviors by the women who are our guides. Learning new modes of behavior are important for longterm success and wellness. In this video I encourage Black girls to use help-seeking as a tool to create lasting success. The most important step to help-seeking is admitting that help is needed. It is equally important to seek assistance from appropriate sources even if that means looking outside of our families of origin. With appropriate guides, Black girls will continue sprinkling their magic on the world! #blackgirlmagic Learn more at www.bwellcoach.com

This passion crafted her first Children's Book entitled, Little Black Girl--this book serves as a tool of empowerment to instill self worth, love and possibilities in young women. No matter where you come from--what matters is where you're going. Robin has agreed to share her love of writing (and reading) with the #NAACPreads campaign to uplift grade-level reading in urban areas. Visit our website: www.trekkinwithmelanin.com Our daughter, Anaya, having a conversation with the taxi driver on our way home. This video was taken 4 years ago when Anaya was 6 years old. She moved to Korea when she was 1 almost 2. A question often asked about this video: Why is "black" in the title? Why does her skin color matter? Representation matters. Little black girls around the world need to see positive examples of themselves. The media often portrays us negatively. Allowing little black girls an opportunity to see themselves in a positive way helps boost their self-esteem and shows them that they can accomplish anything, even when the world tells them they can't. There is nothing racist about the title. The overall intention of the video is to inspire other little girls of color that living abroad and learning more than one language is possible. If you are not Black, you have no right to question if this video is "racist." How is this video systematically oppressing you? And to those who suggest I change the title of the video. It is obvious that the title persuaded you to click and watch it. You were curious about the "little black girl" and questioned her ability. Reasons why this video is AWESOME! -Korean is one of the top 3 hardest languages for English speakers to learn. -There are many benefits to raising children that speak more than one language. Children that speak another language have overall better analytical, social, and academic skills than their monolingual peers. We put this video up as a way to show the benefits of raising your children abroad. This is meant to be a positive video to promote awareness that black people are traveling the world and our children are the products of our travels. We want to encourage others that it is possible! Korea is a very homogeneous society, meaning Korea is made up mostly of Koreans. The likelihood of a school having a foreign child is very slim. Foreigners account for only 3 percent of the Korean population. Minorities in the U.S account for 30%. There are more people in the world that speak English. This is due to colonialism. English is more widely spoken around the world by over 340 million people, and Korean is spoken by only 70 million. Korean is a difficult language to speak and there's not a large percentage of people outside of Koreans that speak it. Anyone that has ever tried to learn Korean can understand this and why this video is special. A black girl growing up and going to school in Korea is rare, let alone knowing how to speak the language. Just because a child lives in a country doesn't automatically mean that she will speak the language. There are people who live abroad and their children don't attend the local schools. She is existing and living in a culture that is completely different from her own, which is something to be celebrated considering all the negative images that are displayed in the media for black children. She is a child and just because you can't see the beauty in this video doesn't mean it is not amazing. Don't knock others or spread negativity, especially towards a child for possessing a skill that you may not be able to do yourself. The Souls of Black Girls is a provocative news documentary that takes a critical look at media images--how they are instituted, established and controlled. The documentary also examines the relationship between the historical and existing media images of women of color and raises the question of whether they may be suffering from a self-image disorder as a result of trying to attain the standards of beauty that are celebrated in media images. The documentary features candid interviews with young women discussing their self-image and social commentary from Actresses Regina King and Jada Pinkett Smith, PBS Washington Week Moderator Gwen Ifill, Rapper/Political Activist Chuck D, and Cultural Critic Michaela Angela Davis, among others. The Souls of Black Girls is a piece that attempts to provoke honest dialogue and critical thinking among women of color about media images and our present condition—internally and externally.
