How Do You Stay Sane for Months at Sea? | The Swim

How does long-distance swimmer Ben Lecomte maintain his sanity during his daily eight-hour swims, and can a complex computer model track it? How Millions of Microscopic Fibers Are Ending Up In Our Bodies - https://youtu.be/Bbg0L7JN15U Read More How Marathon Swimmers Stay Sane During Their Lonely Swims https://sports.vice.com/en_ca/article/537mnb/how-marathon-swimmers-stay-sane-during-their-lonely-swims "Through all the training, the early mornings, the feedings, the grueling kilometres Olympic swimmer Stephanie Horner and her comrades rack up, almost nothing can prepare them for mowing through arduous loads and working long periods in isolation in the pool. It's just them and a chlorinated haze of water. Isolation has the potential to produce athletes that become bored, often finding it difficult in executing the repetition required to progress to the next level. It can also force a swimmer to give up during competition or quit altogether." Can a Computer Replace Your Doctor? https://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/21/sunday-review/high-tech-health-care-useful-to-a-point.html "Silicon Valley is bringing a host of new data-driven technologies to health care, many of them with enormous potential. But before we rush to measure every human attribute in real time, it would be a good idea to ask: When is more data actually useful to promote and ensure better health? And when does technology add true value to health care? The results have been mixed. May A.I Help You? https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/11/14/magazine/tech-design-ai-chatbot.html "TWO YEARS AGO, Alison Darcy built a robot to help out the depressed. As a clinical research psychologist at Stanford University, she knew that one powerful way to help people suffering from depression or anxiety is cognitive behavioral therapy, or C.B.T. It’s a form of treatment in which a therapist teaches patients simple techniques that help them break negative patterns of thinking. C.B.T. is not difficult to learn, but it’s more effective when it includes regular check-ins with a therapist — which, as Darcy knew, isn’t feasible for most people. Maybe they can’t afford it; maybe they’re too busy; maybe they avoid treatment because it seems stigmatizing to them." ____________________ Ben Lecomte's historic swim across the Pacific Ocean is a feat that can’t be missed. Join us as we dive into the most extensive data set of the Pacific Ocean ever collected. Learn about the technology the Seeker crew is using to deter sharks away from Ben and measure the impact of the long-distance swim on his mind and body. Ben's core mission is to raise awareness for ocean health issues, so we’ll investigate key topics such as pollution and plastics as he swims closer to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, discover potential consequences from climate change, and examine how factors like ocean currents can impact his progress along the way. THE DEAD SEA | WHY DO YOU FLOAT!? - [PART 2]

05:14
It's salty, it's dead, it feels weird and it's awesome! Join me on Day 2 of my 7 Day adventure through Israel as I visit this natural wonder, explore the southern desert of the country and hang out with some awesome people in the process! I was invited to visit by the organization, Vibe Israel (https://www.facebook.com/vibeisrael/ ) to visit this beautiful country, explore it's tourist sites, destinations, culture, cuisine and make some new friends. Most of the world has preconceived notions about this politically charged country, however I went with an open mind and with the goal of just experiencing this place for what it had to offer for most tourists and adventure seekers. Why Do Deep Sea Creatures Look So Scary?

02:54
Deep sea creatures like the anglerfish look terrifying. Turns out, there’s a reason for that. It was in part drawn from a paper that is widely shared, but not largely accepted in today's marine biology community. Many thanks to Dr. Craig McClain for pointing it out. There is a lot we don't know about deep sea gigantism, but according to Dr. McClain, it may occur because of the lack of food in the deep sea. Larger creatures are more metabolically efficient and better at resisting starvation than smaller creatures. Accuracy is extremely important to me, and I will do my best to try to prevent an error like this from slipping in again. I have removed the relevant section at 2:11. 10 Creepy Sea Creatures You Didn't Know Existed

04:33
Did you know any of these amazing and scary deep sea creatures? It's hard to believe these bizarre animals exist. Subscribe: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg 'Hatchet Fish' footage by Filmic Art : www.filmicart.com For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] Description: There is a vast world below the ocean that we have yet to discover in its entirety. While we seem to know nearly everything about the land, the sea still leaves much to be desired. As you go down into the depths of the ocean, you’ll notice a lot will change. For one, you’ll begin to be immersed in darkness. Second, the pressure will change. So, the creatures that have been discovered deep in the oceanic depths are quite different biologically, and they can be quite terrifying to look at. But once we begin to understand them, we can start to learn more about our existence, and even come closer to curing diseases and solving some of the world’s most complex mysteries. However, the sea creatures that have been discovered recently have shown to be just downright creepy and terrifying. You probably recall the Angler Fish, especially if you’re seen the Disney movie, “Finding Nemo”. If you didn’t realize that this fish is the real deal, get ready for new additions to your nightmares. It wasn’t a work of fiction or some messed up fantasy of some Disney Imagineer. The fish that we see in this video is actually female, and the male is a small weakling, wandering the sea to find a female with her pheromones. The male then attaches itself to the female and becomes a parasite. Every part of the male merges with the female except for the testicles, which the female uses to impregnate herself. Jokes aside, this is quite a fascinating process despite how creepy it is. Similar to the angler fish is the Viper Fish, which has a natural extra attachment that illuminates in the darkness of the sea with the purpose of attracting prey. The blob fish is a creature that you wonder what God was smoking or shooting up when he decided to create the blob fish. This fish has no bones, and literally just hangs out on the ocean floor and hopes that food comes to its mouth. Whether you want to worship the blob fish for its epic level of laziness or wonder how in the world the species is still in existence with such an apathetic demeanor, it’s still creepy to look at. Then we have the goblin shark, which is pretty much like the underwater version of the alien from the movie “Alien” due to its protruding mouth. The goblin shark has a large snout and needle-like teeth that are sharp and deadly. For a completely random sea creature, we have the Christmas Tree Worms, which really look like tiny walking fir trees that come in different colors. The branches or hair-like appendages help them breathe as well as consume phytoplankton. Then we have the sea pig, which looks nothing like the pigs we have on land. But instead the sea pig is a multi-tubed foot sea creature that is closely related to the sea cucumber. It eats by pulling water and absorbing organic food. Quite innovative, even though it looks creepy. For more creepy sea creatures, check out the rest of the video for more. 5 Prehistoric Sea Monsters That Could Eat Megalodons.

The megalodon is considered to be the largest shark that ever inhabited the earth. But among the hundreds of prehistoric predators that existed, would there be any predators that could have confronted it? In a hypothetical scenario, where the most ruthless marine beasts would have coincided in the same era of the megalodon, who of all these, would be more adapted to devour this monstrous shark? Up next, we will review the most suitable candidates. My Facebook. http://bit.ly/2fFRQya Music: Creative Commons Attribution (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)

10 Things You Didn't Know About Sea Urchins

02:27
Here are 10 things you probably didn't know about their surprisingly somewhat-complex lives of sea urchins. "Is this a predation event that we are witnessing? We might be witnessing some deep-sea predation here." [NOAA] Ah, the life of a sea urchin. Just floating around in the ocean and... What do sea urchins do, anyway? Here are 10 things you probably didn't know about their surprisingly somewhat-complex lives. Number 10. Some hang around for a long time. The red variety can live for about 200 years, making them among the longest lasting creatures on Earth. That means it's entirely possible that there's still an urchin out there who crossed paths with Lewis & Clark. Number 9. They don't have brains. The movements of their tubular feet are controlled by a simple nerve ring. It's relatively small, and most of their interior space is filled with digestive, water-carrying, and reproductive organs. Number 8. Sea urchins have teeth which come together and form a beak of sorts called an Aristotle's lantern. "Each urchin has 5 teeth which are self-sharpening and are replaced every few months." [BBC] Number 7. Being prickly isn't their only line of defense. Sea urchins can also use their spines to burrow into small rock enclosures when extra safety measures are required. Number 6. Their spines are also light sensitive. That's how they get a sense of where they are. In fact, their ability to differentiate between varying intensities of bright and dark is so sensitive, it gives them visual abilities equal to some sea creature that have eyes. Number 5. Sea urchins reproduce in groups. The process starts with males releasing sperm into the water. Then, the females come along and throw some eggs into the mix. When the two combine, a baby sea urchin will soon enter the world. Number 4. Our planet may be saved by them. Well, by studying and mimicking them, anyway. When sea urchins create their exoskeletons they use nickel ions to trap the carbon dioxide needed for its development. Scientists are currently testing how effective nickel nanoparticles are at converting larger amounts of CO2 into carbonate. Number 3. They're highly sought-after snacks. Oceans are filled with creatures looking to feast on sea urchins. Among them are sea otters, wolf eels, octopuses, and triggerfish. Number 2. Humans like them too. Some people even eat sea urchins while they're still alive, cutting them open with a pair of scissors and slurping out their insides. Number 1. Sea urchins are excellent judges of water quality. When water starts to go bad, they're among the first creatures to react to its diminishing condition. Telltale behaviors include the collapsing of spines, slowed movement, and, sadly, death.

Sea level rise is so much more than melting ice

06:09
While researching climate change, we heard something confusing: the sea level in New York City is rising about one and a half times faster than the global average. We couldn’t figure out what that meant. Isn’t the sea level...flat? So we called up an expert and went down the rabbit hole. And, we did our best to visualize her truly bizarre answers with animations, dioramas, and a lot of melting ice. Full of contradictions, it is transparent yet it can glow with colour, it is powerful enough to shatter rock but it can melt in the blink of an eye. It takes many shapes, from the fleeting beauty of a snowflake to the multi-million tonne vastness of a glacier and the eeriness of the ice fountains of far-flung moons. Science writer Dr Gabrielle Walker has been obsessed with ice ever since she first set foot on Arctic sea ice. In this programme she searches out some of the secrets hidden deep within the ice crystal to try to discover how something so ephemeral has the power to sculpt landscapes, to preserve our past and inform our future. Sea Urchins Pull Themselves Inside Out to be Reborn | Deep Look

03:23
Conceived in the open sea, tiny spaceship-shaped sea urchin larvae search the vast ocean to find a home. After this incredible odyssey, they undergo one of the most remarkable transformations in nature. SUBSCRIBE to Deep Look! http://goo.gl/8NwXqt DEEP LOOK is a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Get a new perspective on our place in the universe. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small. * NEW VIDEOS EVERY OTHER TUESDAY! * Every summer, millions of people head to the coast to soak up the sun and play in the waves. But they aren’t alone. Just beyond the crashing surf, hundreds of millions of tiny sea urchin larvae are also floating around, preparing for one of the most dramatic transformations in the animal kingdom. Scientists along the Pacific coast are investigating how these microscopic ocean drifters, which look like tiny spaceships, find their way back home to the shoreline, where they attach themselves, grow into spiny creatures and live out a slow-moving life that often exceeds 100 years.“These sorts of studies are absolutely crucial if we want to not only maintain healthy fisheries but indeed a healthy ocean,” says Jason Hodin, a research scientist at the University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Laboratories. http://staff.washington.edu/hodin/ http://depts.washington.edu/fhl/ Sea urchins reproduce by sending clouds of eggs and sperm into the water. Millions of larvae are formed, but only a handful make it back to the shoreline to grow into adults. --- What are sea urchins? Sea urchins are spiny invertebrate animals. Adult sea urchins are globe-shaped and show five-point radial symmetry. They move using a system of tube feet. Sea urchins belong to the phylum Echinodermata along with their relatives the sea stars (starfish), sand dollars and sea slugs. --- What do sea urchins eat? Sea urchins eat algae and can reduce kelp forests to barrens if their numbers grow too high. A sea urchin’s mouth, referred to as Aristotle’s lantern, is on the underside and has five sharp teeth. The urchin uses the tube feet to move the food to its mouth. --- How do sea urchins reproduce? Male sea urchins release clouds of sperm and females release huge numbers of eggs directly into the ocean water. The gametes meet and the sperm fertilize the eggs. The fertilized eggs grow into free-swimming embryos which themselves develop into larvae called plutei. The plutei swim through the ocean as plankton until they drop to the seafloor and metamorphosize into the globe-shaped adult urchins. ---+ Read the entire article on KQED Science: https://ww2.kqed.org/science/2016/08/23/sea-urchins-pull-themselves-inside-out-to-be-reborn/ ---+ For more information: Marine Larvae Video Resource http://marinedevelopmentresource.stanford.edu/ ---+ More Great Deep Look episodes: From Drifter to Dynamo: The Story of Plankton | Deep Look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUvJ5ANH86I Pygmy Seahorses: Masters of Camouflage | Deep Look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3CtGoqz3ww The Fantastic Fur of Sea Otters | Deep Look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zxqg_um1TXI ---+ See some great videos and documentaries from PBS Digital Studios! Our passive systems are estimated to remove half the Great Pacific Garbage patch in just five years, and at a fraction of the cost. Our first cleanup system will be deployed in the summer of 2018. This is how it works. Crazy DANGERS Of Deep Sea Diving

09:50
Of course, there are a ton of reasons to go for an adventure far under the surface of the ocean, but do you know all of the potential risks that accompany each and every dive? If you didn’t, here they are, these are the 15 Dangers Of Deep Sea Diving. #7 - Nitrogen Narcosis Nitrogen Narcosis is yet another serious issue divers need to be aware of. When the human body gets too much nitrogen in their system, it creates a kind of narcotic effect. It would feel like the nitrous-oxide gas given to you at the dentist’s office. While you might enjoy that woozy feeling when you’re inside a dentist’s office on dry land, this is not a feeling you would want to experience when you are far under water. Nitrogen narcosis damages both sensory perception and judgment making each decision the affected diver makes a potentially dire one. #6 - Gaps In Actual Experience If you are an experienced diver, you know that there is a rule that states you have to take a refresher course every six months that you haven’t been actively diving. Although you, being a diver, might laugh because you believe that the course really isn’t all that big of a deal, it really is very important. After not diving for just a few months, some of the very minor but incredibly important and vital details of the preparation or procedure of diving could be forgotten. Depending on which part you forget, that tiny sliver of information might just cost you your life. Just take the refresher course to get back in the loop. #5 - Losing Your “Buddy” It might seem silly but the “Buddy System” is really important when it comes to dives and swimming out in the ocean. If you have a buddy, there should always be at least one other person in the water that is concerned with your safety and survival. The ocean is not a place to lose your buddy. #4 - “The Bends” Decompression sickness is most often referred to as “the bends” and it is caused by increased pressure which makes the tissues in a body absorb more nitrogen. When that fierce pressure is suddenly reduced, the extra nitrogen can form tiny nitrogen bubbles that can kill. When deep sea divers want to return to the ocean’s surface, they must do so in distinct stages that are carefully monitored so that they can best control the rate of which the absorbed nitrogen is released. The bends can range from the affected having aching joints, a creepy skin rash, or paralysis and even possibly death. Do NOT go diving without being properly trained. It is not a hobby that you can just pick up an afternoon. #3 - Not Wearing Adequate Protection We aren’t just talking about wearing durable gloves while checking out a sunken shipwreck, although if you do get cut without wearing protective gloves, you can get tetanus, which doesn’t sound like fun. We’re talking about wearing gear that is suited to the climate and temperatures of the weather and the ocean you are diving into. When you are wearing a short wetsuit, don’t go play around in some coral where you can easily get cut up, which could lead to even more danger. Also, the temperature of the water gets colder the further down you get, so make sure you dress appropriately, it’s not like you can just put on a jacket once you’re underwater. #2 - Oxygen Toxicity Oxygen toxicity happens only when the person is deep sea diving and goes more than 135 feet below the surface. Just like nitrogen, which caused a lot of problems for divers earlier, the body absorbs more oxygen when the body finds itself underneath increased water pressure. Experienced divers know how to deal with the increase of oxygen but as the pressure and depth increase, the body absorbs more and more oxygen and too much can become toxic. The symptoms start with tunnel vision and nausea and then switch to loss of consciousness and seizures. If either one of the last things happens while you’re underwater, you’re most likely never making it to the surface again. #1 - Mask Squeeze The woman in this picture looks like she is about to start bleeding from her eyeballs which is a rather frightening thing to see. However, she isn’t a lead role in an up and coming horror film, she’s suffering from a diver’s condition called “mask squeeze.” When the pressure of the air inside the mask isn’t equalized correctly, the outside pressure causes the scuba mask to be pushed on the diver’s face resulting in this scary painful look. The small blood vessels surrounding and in the eyes burst, which leads to the bloody eyeballs you see here. This is not the look she was going for, we’re sure of that.
