Oracle DBTIMEZONE Function

It returns it in the format of +/- TZH:TZM, or the time zone region name. It’s useful to know what timezone the database is in when working with dates and different time zones, as it can impact the queries you write. The syntax for this function is quite simple: DBTIMEZONE There are no parameters - just the function name. You can’t actually change the timezone of the database using this function. It uses the timezone of the operating system of the server the database runs on. It’s similar to the SESSIONTIMEZONE function, but that function returns the timezone of your session and not the database server. It’s also similar to the SYSTIMESTAMP function, but that function returns the date, time, and timezone of the database, where DBTIMEZONE just returns the timezone. Oracle CURRENT_TIMESTAMP Function

Just like the CURRENT_DATE function, it uses the session time zone, which is where you logged in from. This could be different to the database time zone. The syntax of the CURRENT_TIMESTAMP function is: CURRENT_TIMESTAMP ( [precision] ) The return type of this function is TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE. The precision parameter is optional, and it lets you specify the number of fractional seconds to return. If this is omitted, it uses the default of 6. It’s different to the SYSTIMESTAMP function, because CURRENT_TIMESTAMP returns the session timezone, and SYSTIMESTAMP returns the database time zone. So, if I’m logging in from Melbourne, Australia, and the database is in London, England, then the CURRENT_TIMESTAMP will return a date and time that’s 10 hours ahead of SYSTIMESTAMP, and in a different time zone. It may be on the same day, or it could be a different day, depending on when I run the function. You can perform arithmetic on this function just like any other date value (e.g. CURRENT_TIMESTAMP - 7 for 7 days ago). However, it might be better to use interval data types so you can keep the original data type. This function allows you to convert a string value into a TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE value. A TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE value is a type of DATE, but has a few components: - A date, including day, month, and year - A time, including hours, minutes, and seconds - A time zone, which is the number of hours and minutes difference from GMT This is a useful data type because it allows you to store dates in different time zones, and allow users in other time zones to see the data in a way that makes sense to them. The time zone part is the difference from GMT. This means that a “+7:00” is 7 hours ahead of GMT (e.g. Bangkok) and “-5:00” is 5 hours behind GMT (e.g. US Eastern Standard Time). The syntax of the TO_TIMESTAMP_TZ function is: TO_TIMESTAMP_TZ ( input_string [, format_mask] [, nls_param] ) The input_string parameter is the string you want to convert. The format_mask is where you specify the format of the input_string parameter. This is so you can specify the input_string in a variety of formats, and just use this format_mask to indicate which format it is in. The nls_param parameter is another optional parameter, and allows you to specify the returning language of the month and day names. This Video Tutorial Will Describe how to SORT data which is already inserted into the table in oracle 12C version. This command will also work on other versions of database like Oracle 11g Database, Oracle 10g Database, Oracle 9i Database, Oracle 8i Database, Oracle 8 Database and so on. Whenever you create a new table in oracle, you insert the data as and when it comes. But you always need to get data in particular order. For that, we use ORDER BY clause with the SELECT statement to sort the data in ascending or descending order and retrieve it. So please dont install sample schemas if you dont need them. SQL--- alter table OE.ORDERS drop column ORDER_DATE ; Table altered. Now the Time Zone can be altered using above command. Step 4: Also check the value of " SELECT SESSIONTIMEZONE FROM DUAL; " and if the value differs from os time zone, db time zone , emd.properties / agent time zone then also set it according to your timezone but I believe it always gives the OS time zone. Step 5: Stop and Restart all Services and check that Oracle DBConsole service is running or not and if not running then start from command prompt " emctl start dbconsole" . https://hostname:1158/em/

Oracle SQL Tutorial 30 - UTF-8 and UTF-16 Character Sets

A few videos ago we discussed UTF-8 and UTF-16 encoding, but when we are working with a database we do not worry about encodings as much as we do character sets. That's because a specific character set is going to have a specific encoding. The reason I am making this video is to introduce you to the most common character sets and to teach you the differences. That’s because as we go into the national character sets we need to understand the information taught in this video. So the first character set I am going to teach you about is AL32UTF8. AL32UTF8 is a character set that uses the uff-8 encoding and each character can take up to 4 bytes with the utf-8 encoding. There is another character set (not encoding) called utf8 (no hyphen) which is also encoded with UTF-8. This can be a little confusing because UTF8 is the name of an encoding and a character set, but bear with me. Both of these character sets are UTF-8 encoded, but UTF8 uses an older version of UTF-8 encoding. Generally, they work about the same, but the way certain characters are stored is slightly different, specifically way certain characters are stored is slightly different, specifically what are known as supplementary characters, which take up 4 bytes. The max size for a UTF8 character set is 3 bytes, as they do not directly support the supplementary characters as 4 bytes but instead store them across 2 groups of 3 bytes each. Oracle recommends that you use AL32UTF8 for all future development instead of the archaic UTF8 character set. There is another character set that you should know about, and that is AL16UTF16, which uses the UTF-16 encoding. Watch my video over UTF-8 and UTF-16 to learn more about UTF-16. Lastly, there is a character set known as UTFE, which uses an encoding known as UTF-EBCDIC. This is like a super archaic character set, and I'm not even going to talk about it. Oracle Database 12c Security Session 2 - Tutorial Agenda John: Thank you. Thank you, David. Good afternoon, good morning, depending on the time zone, everybody. I'll run through now what I want to cover in this short session. First, I'm going to go through the Virtual Private Database. Virtual Private Database also known by several other acronyms, some people actually refer to it as Row-Level Security. Other people use Fine Grained Access Control. So, VPD RLS FGAC. pause A powerful facility. It's also bundled up by the way as Label Security. It was first introduced in release 8i and it's just about works. But back then it's had serious performance problems. Furthermore, it wasn't really suitable at all for a web environment. I think many people - myself included - tried it back with 8i and thought this doesn't work and gave up. However, in the later releases, particularly with changes that came in with 10g, it's become a very powerful capability indeed which I strongly advice everybody to look at. VPD - we'll have a look at VPD - I should point out, it's Enterprise Edition. Then we'll move on to a 12c feature, your data redaction newly released 12.1. Positioning data redaction against VPD there is, as far as users are concerned, considerable functional overlap. But the underlying technology is in fact completely different. The protection you get with data redaction is not as comprehensive as that provided by the VPD. In some cases, my attempt to reverse engineer it found it may be possible circumvented in certain circumstances if the user 1:58 inaudible privilege position. But compared to VPD, it is not simple to implement and I don't believe they're only performance issues. Redaction is licensed as part of the advanced security option from 12c onwards. pause Thirdly, a brief mention of data masking. I don't think I'm going to have time to demonstrate data masking but for completeness I do want to mention it, because again there's an overlap with data redaction, with Virtual Private Databases, all in the same sort of area. But I won't have time to demonstrate that, I don't think. The data masking briefly then, unlike the other two, data masking actually changes data. Virtual Private Database restricts the data that people see. Data redaction conceals or hides the data. A subtle difference there. Data masking actually changes the data in the database and it's a permanent change. That makes it suitable for long production systems. All those clones you'd make. When you clone your databases to test systems, the development systems, the DSS query systems and so on, you have to clean the data. You have to remove all the personal references so that people can't see any of the personal indicators as you move your data from production to the warehouse for redaction development. That's where data masking comes in. A permanent change makes the data typically on cloned systems it's generated from your production boxes. The reason I won't have time to demonstrate it is that with 12c it is pretty awkward. One data masking came in with 11g. There was a very nice graphical interface provided with 11g database control and no PL/SQL interface. With release 12c, database control no longer exists and there's not a data masking interface provided with database express. So to get data masking functioning nowadays, you need either grid control or cloud control. I don't think I'm going to have time to switch over to that environment. But, remember, it's there and those overlap with the other two functions. Then lastly, we'll move on to Transparent Sensitive Data Protection, TSDP. pause TSDP is a very good frontend, simplified the pain of implementing VPD or data redaction. So what I'll run through is VPD, redaction, and then Transparent Sensitive Data Protection, which will make it so much easier to configure.
