If your seadoo won't start and you're just getting a clicking sound, this video shows you a possible solution. This video is of my 1995 Seadoo SP, but this procedure will be applicable to many Seadoos with 587, 657, and 717 engines. I"m not sure about other engines because I've only worked on those 3 engines. These engines are in most seadoos up until 1996. Here I remove the Fuse box, test the starter solenoid, remove the starter, test the starter, and install a new one.

This short tutorial is on saving money. Lots of money! Starter was dying and had left me stranded on the water twice, so looked into the cost of a new one which was $450.00 Canadian dollars and decided to bring it to a local auto electric shop. They managed to fix it for $100.00 and it works just great! Visit us at: http://www.jetskidetailing.com

I initially made this video to diagnose a no spark issue with my Seadoo. I was confident that was the problem because I had the Seadoo running out of the water before I took it to the lake, but once I got to the lake, it wouldn’t start in or out of the water. I tried putting starter fluid directly into the carbs, and didn’t get them to fire up. I thought I was getting fuel to the engine, but it wouldn’t start, so my next thought was spark. Before I took it to the lake, we got it running in my driveway. My brother had rebuilt the carbs for me, but he hadn’t done anything like that before, and I’m starting to think that he may not have cleaned them out properly, and the carbs are still the problem. One weird thing is that the seadoo won’t fire even when I put gas and starter fluid directly into the cylinders. I assumed I would at least get a few rotations out of the engine with fuel directly in the cylinders, but it wouldn’t fire at all. In the video, you can tell it takes some time for the seadoo to fire up. It finally does, and I let it warm up for a few minutes at idle. Then I give it some gas and it doesn’t seem to hit the RPMs it should be. (I’m assuming this based upon the sound I heard). I worked on it last night, and got it running in the video. When I went out this morning, it fired right up. I think this was a carburetor issue, but want to know for sure. Do any of you have thoughts? I’m going to run the machine out of the water for an hour or so and make sure I’m getting good gas flow through the carbs. If the machine doesn’t run right, I’m going to rebuild the carburetors.

FAST starter motor removal 12" - 18" of ratchet extensions and a 13mm were all I needed to get the starter out. I found that the bottom bolt has to be done by feel since you can't see it at all, and it wasn't terribly difficult to do. The other two bolts were easy to see and simple to remove. Following this, I had to disconnect the negative (black) wire from the battery as it goes directly to the starter. I also had to cut a zip tie that held the positive (red) wire to the hull, and the starter slid out from under the back of the exhaust just as you said. After this, I simply placed it on top of the engine and removed the red wire and the black wire from the old starter with ease.

Made this quick video to help others who may experience this common problem. If you start your sea-doo and it won't start, but you hear a click, that is the solenoid. Chances are, it simply needs replacing. If it is not a solenoid issue, check your wires. If all else fails, you might try jumping the terminals to starter, or, decide to remove the starter for a bench test. Starters can be rebuilt by most efficient local alternator/starter rebuild shops. So check that out before you buy new.

This is the sound the ski makes when I press the start button. It will eventually start but it seems like the starter is not spinning the flywheel. Brand new battery installed as well.. The ski was re-built from top to bottom a year ago and ran perfect but has been sitting for around 4 months. Any help would be appreciated.

2002 Sea Doo GTX 4 tec with 48 hours on it. The engine is an SBT rebuild, not sure why it has a rebuilt engine when the ski has only 48 hours on it. The SBT engine ingested water and was left to sit prior to me buying it causing the cylinders to rust. Any suggestions? No codes come up when set button is pressed 5 times. Update: Replaced the ECU, used my CanDooPro to program the keys, it now starts and runs but wont idle, the idle bypass valve is throwing codes. A replacement throttle body was ordered from eBay. ANOTHER UPDATE: the starter bendix was missing two teeth, and the MAP sensor was bad. Replaced those and then the timing chain broke, replaced that and THEN two rod bearings spun.....WTF FINAL UPDATE: Pulled the dead engine and found a replacement 4 tec on eBay for $1100 with "80 hours". Dropped the replacement engine in and IT LIVES. I put over 30 hours on the eBay engine during summer of 2016, with the only problem being a failed oil pressure sensor (common problem). Replaced the oil pressure sensor for $35 and all is well. I'll took apart the failed 4 tec engine and have been selling the pieces on eBay to try and recover some of my money. The 2002 Sea Doo cost me $550 with a trailer. Sold the trailer for $200. Spent $300 on gaskets, $450 for ECU, $65 throttle body, $60 starter, $35 oil pressure sensor, $1100 used engine. Total spent about $2060 . I sold the bad crankshaft and made $90 and still have a of of extra parts to sell this spring to bring my total down. 2017 UPDATE: the used "80 hour" eBay engine is still going strong. I reinstalled the original ECU and IT WORKED fine, so I sold it on eBay and that brought my costs down another $400, also sold the rusted cylinder engine block, crankshaft, head, cam, rockers, rods and exhaust manifold and those parts brought me $600. So the total for this low hour 2002 SeaDoo GTX was about $1000 out of pocket, and countless hours of work and frustration, but well worth the effort!

I have a 2001 Sea Doo GTX DI, after riding all day I let it sit and when I tried to start it this weird whining along with a clicking noise appeared. This video will show you how to diagnose wether you have a bad starter solenoid or starter. If you jump the solenoid and nothing happens then it is most likely your starter. Check all your connections and make sure they are secure as well. Replacement Solenoids can be found cheap off of Amazon for 20 dollars. The battery is fully charged, there's a brand new starter and I jumped the solenoid or relay starter. It was working fine and then this slowly got worse to the point where it does not start now. Any ideas? This has been fixed. It was the gear inside the motor that the starter engages. It was broke.
