An infectious disease, which causes the limbs of starfish to crawl away from their bodies, is killing multiple species along the west coast in the largest marine epidemic ever known. Scientists think the pathogen spreads through the water and physical contact, as well as through shellfish. Starfish are a keystone species, so their loss could disrupt the ecosystem, say scientists.

"Mountain" is taken from the self-titled album "Chocolate Starfish", which was released in 1994. Chocolate Starfish were an excellent Australian rock band based in Melbourne, who released a number of hits in the early 1990's before disbanding in 1998. This is one of my favorite songs from the cd & I believe that it is a beautiful song. I've put together images of Australian scenery, Australian bats, owls & birds and some fabulous art.

Protoreaster nodosus from Western and Central Pacific Ocean can grow to 6 inches in an aquarium. Feeds on many types of invertebrates such as sponges, worms and even corals. In an aquarium, it will eat anything that it can get its stomach over which is at the center of body. It does not have eyes, but have a great sense of smell. It is a smart invertebrate that will learn where the food will be supplied. Not compatible with most triggers and puffers, not reef safe at all. As with all invertebrates, not hardy and needs stable water parameters. Also, do not expose it to air as it is not good for them.

Do starfish have eyes? In this video we explain if a starfish has eyes and how these amazing creatures get around. Starfish, which are more scientifically known as sea stars, don't have any visible body parts that look like eyes. That leads to the question of what they might use to see. What do starfish use for eyes? While it may not look like starfish have eyes, they do although they're not like our eyes. A starfish has eye spots that cannot see much in the way of details, but can detect light and dark. These eye spots are at the tip of each of the starfish's arms. Thank you for watching! how to kill asteria starfish with harlequin shrimp. rotter tube reef : little white starfish on your aquarium glass are asteria starfish. small white starfish are bad for your aquarium. they will destroy your zoanthid coral and coralline algae which is the nice purple on your live rock. you can remove them but they multiply too quickly. the best way is to get a harlequin shrimp or two. the harlequin shrimp eat these asteria starfish, ridding your tank of this pest. once all asteria starfish are gone, the harlequin shrimp will starve unless you feed it more starfish. some people cut a leg off a chocolate chip starfish weekly. they will go after any starfish in your aquarium including sand sifting starfish. you can keep the harlequin shrimp or donate it when cleanup is done. saltwater aquarium care that's fun and honest. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protoreaster_nodosus) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horseshoe_crab) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starfish) Protoreaster nodosus, commonly known as the horned sea star or chocolate chip sea star, is a species of sea star found in the warm, shallow waters of the Indo-Pacific region. They are sometimes seen in the marine aquarium trade. Horseshoe crabs are marine arthropods of the family Limulidae and order Xiphosura or Xiphosurida. They are invertebrates, meaning that they lack a spine. Horseshoe crabs live primarily in and around shallow ocean waters on soft sandy or muddy bottoms. They occasionally come onto shore to mate. They are commonly used as bait and in fertilizer. In recent years, population declines have occurred as a consequence of coastal habitat destruction in Japan and overharvesting along the east coast of North America. Tetrodotoxin may be present in the roe of species inhabiting the waters of Thailand. Because of their origin 450 million years ago, horseshoe crabs are considered living fossils. Starfish or sea stars are star-shaped echinoderms belonging to the class Asteroidea. Common usage frequently finds these names being also applied to ophiuroids, which are correctly referred to as brittle stars or "basket stars". About 1,500 species of starfish occur on the seabed in all the world's oceans, from the tropics to frigid polar waters. They are found from the intertidal zone down to abyssal depths, 6,000 m (20,000 ft) below the surface. In aquariums, these sea stars like to climb around on glass and also filters, which they can disrupt. In public aquariums, these stars are sometimes target-fed with chopped squids, clams or shrimps, and are popular animals for touch pools as it is moderately large in number in some undisturbed areas. Horned sea stars need perfect water condition, suitable diet and proper acclimatization to thrive - thus, these sea stars sometimes do not fare very well. In reef aquariums, they are regarded as undesirable as they have destructive tendencies of toppling decors and digesting patches of corals and sessile organisms; they are reasonably safe if kept in a fish-only aquarium. However, the sea stars are desirable for their cute appearance and relatively non-aggressive behavior.
