The Port of Hamburg and Journey North on the River Elbe, Germany - 14th September, 2014

19:23
The Port of Hamburg is a port in Hamburg, Germany, on the River Elbe. The harbour is located 110 kilometres from the mouth of the Elbe into the North Sea. It is named Germany's "Gateway to the World" and is the largest port in Germany. In terms of TEU throughput, the port of Hamburg is the third-busiest port in Europe (after the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp) and 15th-largest worldwide. The harbour covers an area of 73.99 km² (64.80 km² usable), of which 43.31 km² (34.12 km²) are land areas. The location is naturally advantaged by a branching Elbe, creating an ideal place for a port complex with warehousing and transshipment facilities. The River Elbe flows through the centre of Hamburg and is the port's lifeline to the North Sea. It is one of the major rivers of Central Europe. It rises in the Krkonoše Mountains of the northern Czech Republic before traversing much of Bohemia (Czech Republic), then Germany and flowing into the North Sea at Cuxhaven, 110 km (68 mi) northwest of Hamburg. Its total length is 1,094 kilometres (680 mi). This film begins in central Hamburg on the Eastern bank of the River Elbe, where footage shows both heavy shipping and much smaller personal and passenger craft. It then focuses on the cruise ship MSC Magnifica, which is ported at Hamburg Cruise Terminal (near Altona). After this the footage is directly taken from the MSC Magnifica, and firstly shows surrounding views of the Port, River Elbe and City of Hamburg. Before the journey North out of Hamburg begins. From here onwards, footage is of the Port, passing shipping including Hapag Lloyd passenger vessels, a paddle steamer, ferries and container ships. Hamburg Finkenwerder Airport is featured, with good views of an Airbus A300-600ST (Super Transporter) or Beluga, which is parked by one of the hangars. After this footage goes to the wider Elbe, where the city disappears and gives way to rural and agricultural land as the sun begins to set in the distance. The film ends at night as the MSC Magnifica approaches the Elbe estuary to enter the North Sea. 3 Great Small Ports in Europe

01:38
Check out 3 great small ports in Europe. Europe is dotted with many stunning port towns. Here are 3 of those great small port locations according to National Geographic. Number 3 - The Port of Valletta, located in Malta is a natural deep-water harbor that stretches roughly 2 miles inland. Open 24 hours a day, the port serves as a multi-purpose center. Offering cruise, ferry and cargo ships, it also boasts reception facilities. 16th century limestone buildings serve as a backdrop to the port, while nearby museums and cultural establishments offer visitors entertainment and education. Number 2 -- The Ålesund Port in Norway is a historic site which was rebuilt in the early 20th century in "art nouveau style". Towers and turrets dominate the architecture, while the North Sea islands can be seen in almost any direction. A popular port of call for cruise ships and a 200 meter expansion of the pier in 2012 makes it a great point from which to explore Norway. Cobblestone streets and the colorful architecture are accents to the gorgeous waters that encompass the surrounding town which appears to be straight out of a fairytale. Number 1 - The Port of Gdansk in north central Poland connects with Warsaw by the Vistula River. Comprised of two port areas, Nowy Port serves as an industrial center while Port Polnocny is the biggest maritime development project in the country. The high-tech industry is also booming in this remarkable cultural center and tourist destination.

The Europe of the ports

02:50
The Europe of the ports is a very complex project that aims to document the cultural, economic and social structures of five major European ports: Hamburg, Genoa, Marseilles, Athens and Rotterdam. Five different portraits, because there are different characteristics of each. Their catchment areas, however, they almost connect, expanding to continental Europe. It 's over the culture of the piers, and has tarnished the "waterfront.

11:28
Stadersand is a a part of the German town Stade which is located on the west bank of the river Elbe near Hamburg. This section of the river, 60 miles long, connects the major Port of Hamburg with the North Sea, which makes this one of the busiest shipping routes in Europe. Within about the hour of my visit, several big ships came by: Container ships MSC Oriane, MOL Quest, Cape Mayor, and the hopper dredger Bartolomeu Dias. Enjoy! [© 2016 MBMARS Productions. Russian navy warships shadow & intercept two US navy destroyers entered Baltic Sea

11:06
Russian navy warships shadow & intercept two US navy destroyers entered Baltic Sea - Russian warships have been deployed to shadow two U.S. Navy destroyers operating in the Baltic Sea, it has been reported. Two Russian corvettes, the Boykiy and Soobrazitelny, of the Baltic Fleet have been escorting the USS Porter and USS Gravely, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense. Last week the USS Gravely, an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, was spotted passing through the Danish straits and approaching the Baltic sea, according to the Daily Star. A picture showing the destroyer pulling into Copenhagen, Denmark, was tweeted by the U.S. Navy, who said the ship was there "for a scheduled port visit." Today USS Gravely entered the Baltic Sea alongside the USS Porter under escort by Russia, whose Kaliningrad enclave hosts its main naval base in the region, Baltiysk. "The forces of the Baltic Fleet took Gravely and Porter, the destroyers of the U.S. Navy that entered the southern part of the Baltic Sea, under escort. Russian Navy corvettes Boiky and Soobrazitelny are monitoring the actions of the U.S. ships," the Russian National Defence Management Centre said Monday. Capable of carrying up to 56 Tomahawk missiles, the destroyers are the latest U.S. Navy warships to sail near Russia's territorial waters in an apparent show of force. The U.S. military and NATO allies have stepped up their presence in northern and eastern Europe, deploying troops, aircraft and warships to those areas, and in turn, heightening tensions with Russia. Meanwhile in the Black Sea, U.S. guided-missile destroyer USS Donald Cook is being monitored closely by Russian warships after arriving in the region over the weekend. Port of Barcelona, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, Europe

00:36
The Port of Barcelona has a 2000-year history and great contemporary commercial importance as one of Europe's ports in the Mediterranean, as well as Catalonia's largest port, tying with Tarragona. It is also Spain's third and Europe's ninth largest container port, with a trade volume of 2.57 million TEU's in 2008. The port is managed by the Port Authority of Barcelona. Its 7.86 km2 (3 sq mi) are divided into three zones: Port Vell (the Old Port), the commercial/industrial port and the logistics port (Barcelona Free Port). The port is undergoing an enlargement that will double its size by diverting the mouth of the Llobregat river 2 km (1¼ mi) to the south, and slightly pushing back the Llobregat Delta Nature Reserve. This is not the only port in Barcelona, as there are also two additional yacht harbors / marinas: Port Olímpic and Port Fòrum Sant Adrià to the north. The Port Vell area comprises two marinas or yacht harbors, a fishing port, a maritime station for ferries travelling to the Balearic Islands and other destinations in the Mediterranean and other stations or landing areas for cruise ships, and it abuts the industrial port. In the central area, it also houses "Maremagnum" (a shopping mall and nightlife complex), a multiplex cinema, the IMAX Port Vell (large-format cinema complex) and Europe's largest aquarium, containing 8,000 fish and 11 sharks in 22 basins filled with 6 million litres of sea water. Because it is located in a designated tourist zone, the Maremagnum is the only commercial mall in the city that can open on Sundays and public holidays. Next to the Maremagnum area are the "Golondrines", small ships that take tourists for a visit around the port area and beyond. The Barcelona industrial port is to the south, and comprises the Free Port or Zona Franca de Barcelona, a tariff-free industrial park that has developed within the Port of Barcelona, across the flat land of the Llobregat Delta between the city of Barcelona and that of El Prat de Llobregat and the Barcelona International Airport to the south. A good place to view both the industrial and pleasure port is from Montjuïc, and more specifically, from Montjuïc Castle, as well as from the aerial cable car connecting Barceloneta with the Ferry Station and Montjuïc. In common with much of Western Europe, the older traditional industries in Spain, such as textiles, declined in the face of foreign competition. The surviving companies closed their factories in the city or along the rivers, leaving industrial wastelands or abandoned workers' colonies. In many cases within Spain, these industries moved to the Zona Franca (Catalan: Polígon Industrial de la Zona Franca). The free trade area was constructed in two phases. The first phase covered an area of 70 hectares; the second phase, covering an area of 140 hectares, started construction in 1995. The free trade zone is located within the port area, not far away from downtown Barcelona, and is easy to access. It is 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) away from the Barcelona International Airport, and connected via highway and railway. Business investors here rent offices or bonded warehouses. They can also elect to purchase land to erect their own buildings. The free trade zone offers a series of services. It is divided into a comprehensive service area, truck / lorry area, reception area and sports facilities area. It has a customs duties service, bonded warehousing service, advanced telecommunication and computer system, security system, combined multiple transport system and so on.

France LOSES OUT on Brexit billions: Belgian and Dutch ports picked for new Irish route

03:50
France LOSES OUT on Brexit billions: Belgian and Dutch ports picked for new Irish route FRANCE has been ignored in the European union’s effort to create new shipping routes linking Ireland with Northern Europe in Brussels’ Brexit no deal planning. French ports were excluded from plans adopted by the European Commission to create shipping routes from Ireland to the rest of the Continent while avoiding Britain – which could cost Paris billions of euros in EU grants. The Commission, the EU’s powerful executive, decided to create a direct shipping route by connecting Dublin and Cork with the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands and the Belgian ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge. A Commission spokesman said: “This is to guarantee the connectivity of Ireland with maintain Europe, in particular by ensuring clarity and continuity as regards future priorities for infrastructure development and investments.” A diagram, dated July 11 and published on the Commission’s website, seven French seaports – Roscoff, Brest, Cherborug, Le Havre, Caen, Calais and Dunkerque – were listed on map with connections to Ireland, suggesting they were once considered routes. French ports and business groups attempted to lobby Brussels but to no avail. Six of seven reports as part of a consultation said the route should run through France. In the EU’s draft budget for 2021-2027, there is a proposed €30.6 billion available for its Connecting Europe Facility – which is designed to assist with major infrastructure upgrades across the bloc. This means France could lose out on billions of EU funding as the Dutch and Belgian ports can apply for funds to increase their capacity ahead of the new routes being opened. Funding is still far from a guarantee as handouts are heavily reliant on the outcome of Brexit negotiations, because the routes would only be needed in the event of a no deal, and still need to be adopted by the European Parliament and Council. Martin Selmayr, the German head of the EU’s civil service, has been leading a team preparing for the possibility of a British no deal divorce. In a briefing to MEPs in June, he stressed the importance of Ireland not being cut off financially from the rest of the EU as a result of Brexit. In the event of no deal, Dublin will become mostly cut off from Northern European ports due to its geographical location and the reliance using the Dover-Calais route. The document, briefed by Mr Selmayr to MEPs, said: “The proposal will design a new maritime route to link Ireland with the continental part of the North Sea-Mediterranean corridor.” The new North Sea-Mediterranean route aims to redirect billions of euros worth of trade from the usual overlands route through Britain to Belgium and Netherlands. While French ports have missed out, the country's rail operator SNCF have also been left frustrated after requesting the high-speed rail network linking Paris and Brussels to London should remain included in the transport corridor. SNCF argued the UK should be kept within the EU's North Sea- Mediterranean corridor after Brexit. In its report, the firm said: "SNCF invites the involved parties to avoid hurdles to investments enhancing the existing rail infrastructure connecting the EU and the UK and to consider keeping the Paris-Lille-London/Brussels high speed rail network included in the NSM corridor after Brexit." The French rail operator added it is because the "high speed network is both technically homogeneous and strategic from a market viewpoint."

Korean company launches shipping service on North Pole sea route 새 해상 실크로드 북극항로로 출항

Click "CC" for Scripts Subscribe to Arirang News! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=arirangnews A Korean shipping company has launched a pilot service on a new Arctic route connecting Asia with Europe, becoming the first company to use a North Pole route. Our Sohn Jung-in reports. The Swedish icebreaker Stena Polaris set sail from the port of Ust-Luga on the Gulf of Finland in western Russia on Sunday carrying Korean cargo for Hyundai Glovis. The company is making use of a new Arctic Ocean route, becoming the first Korean shipper to send cargo through the North Pole. The ship is carrying 4,000 tons of naphtha to Korea. Using the Arctic route can cut the travel distance from Korea to northern European countries by 7-thousand kilometers and the duration of the journey by about 10 days compared to the time it takes using the conventional shipping route through the Indian Ocean and the Suez Canal. "If we increase the number of operations using the North Pole route and expand our various Arctic development projects, we feel this could bring about a commercial breakthrough in the near future." The nation's shipping business has high expectations for the new route, which could help reduce distribution costs. "We pushed ahead with this new route to strengthen our global marine competitiveness and Korea's vitalization of North Pole business." The Stena Polaris is scheduled to arrive back at Korea's Gwangyang Port in mid-October. Sohn Jung-in, Arirang News.

A sea change in Cork

00:35
Cork has a long maritime history with people and goods ebbing and flowing through the mouth of its harbour for at least two thousand years. Nowadays it’s a Tier 1 port of national significance, located on the EU’s North Sea-Mediterranean Core Network Corridor, that’s improving links between Ireland and Europe. The Port of Cork also handles cruise liners, which bring over 180,000 tourists eager to explore the city and provide local businesses with much appreciated trade. However, in recent years the Port of Cork has experienced restrictions in handling some of today’s massive sea-faring vessels. Redevelopment is vital for the Port of Cork to remain competitive and future proof the city and county as an international gateway for trade. Plans for the Ringaskiddy port redevelopment project were approved in 2015 and while some advanced works have already been undertaken, 2018 will see this €80 million project get underway. The Port of Cork hopes the redevelopment will be completed and operational by 2020. It’s being part-funded from EU funds as a Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) project, which supports the construction and upgrade of important transport infrastructure across the European Union.

The solution designed in the Detailed Engineering phase for the section Kvesheti-Kobi reduces the length of this route from 35 km to 22 km, and the travel time from one hour to approximately 20 minutes, improving road safety conditions during operation. To achieve this, the future road will include several viaducts and tunnels, including an arch bridge, 432 m in length and with a span of 285 m over Khada valley. At the highest point of the route (3,300 m), under Mount Sadzele, a 9-km tunnel will be built using a 15 m in diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM).
Night Rail Freight Through Königswinter, Germany - 7th & 8th January, 2014

18:50
Königswinter is located on the River Rhine in North Rhine Westphalia in Germany. It has a railway line which is extremely busy with freight traffic to and from the North Sea Ports and industrial Northern Germany / industrial Southern Germany, and pretty much anywhere in Europe between including the Rhone Valley route through France and the routes through Austria. This video features night time freight traffic from Königswinter main station, and by the towns level crossings. The freight includes containers, wagon trailers, cars, logs and much intermodal traffic. This rushes through at high speeds causing much noise which is a contentious issue in the Rhine valley, but the price of being an industrial powerhouse.

In de wandelgangen: Werkbezoek aan North Sea Port

02:21

Hamburg, One of the Most Important Harbours in Europe

02:13
The city of Hamburg has a well-deserved reputation as Germany's Gateway to the World. It is the country's biggest port and the second-busiest in Europe, despite being located astride the River Elbe, some 100 kilometres from the North Sea. It is also Germany's second largest city with a population of over 1.8 million and the Greater Hamburg Metropolitan Region has a population of over four million. One of the most important harbours in Europe and the world, Hamburg takes great pride in its mercantile background, which built the city's wealth in the past centuries. From 1241 on, it was member of the Hanseatic League, a medieval trade monopoly across Northern Europe. In the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, millions left Europe on their way to the new world through the Hamburg harbour. Today, the harbour ranks second in Europe and eleventh world-wide. Consequently, one of Hamburg's tag lines is "The Gateway to the World". A typical Hamburg visit includes a tour of the city hall and the grand church St. Michaelis, and visiting the old warehouse district and the harbour promenade. Sightseeing buses connect these points of interest. As Hamburg is one of the world's largest harbours many visitors take one of the harbour and/or canal boat tours. The mercantile background reflects in the city's architecture. The only palace in Hamburg is the town hall, which houses the citizen's parliament and the senate. Apart from that, the city still has large quarters with expensive houses and villas. These residences were home to merchants and captains, surrounded by lots of greenery. The people of Hamburg are known as "Hamburger". The beef patties on a bun were named after this city, where presumably they were invented (although not popularized: you won't find any "traditional hamburgers" in Hamburg). QUESTIONS? The port of Marseille Fos

03:08
The Port of Marseille Fos is France’s leading port and the 2nd largest mediterranean port. Ideally located on the shores of the Mediterranean, France's leading port, the Port of Marseille Fos, is the natural gateway to the south of Europe. It positions itself as an alternative to the ports of Northern Europe. Covering an area as large as the city of Paris, it has all the required space and infrastructures to accommodate maritime, logistic and industrial activities. As a generalist port, it handles all kinds of goods: hydrocarbons and bulk liquids (oil, gas and chemical products), general cargo (containers and other packaging) and bulk solids (minerals and cereals). It includes warehouses on two logistic zones near the Fos container terminals (Ikea, Maisons du Monde, Geodis/ Mattel, etc.) as well as industries (refineries, steel industry, chemical industry).
NATO, Partners Hold Land, Sea Exercises in Eastern Europe

07:25
Thousands of troops from NATO and its partner nations are training on land and sea in central and eastern Europe Thursday, in two major exercises that aim to demonstrate their cooperation and rapid response capabilities at a time when the region feels threatened by Russia. Around 4,000 U.S. and European troops from 14 nations took part in the annual Baltic Operations navy exercise that opened Thursday in Poland's Baltic Sea port of Szczecin. The 45th edition of the so-called BALTOPS exercise involves maritime, air and ground forces with about 50 ships and submarines and over 50 aircraft, and will run through June 16 The training includes "tracking down and fighting submarines and sea mines, the use of air defense and landing troops as well as defense against navy vessels,'' said Lt. Cmdr. Jacek Kwiatkowski, spokesman for the exercise. The European troops come from Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Latvia, Germany, Norway, Britain, Sweden and host nation Poland. BALTOPS began in 1972 as a NATO exercise. Former Eastern Bloc nations joined in 1993, as they opened efforts to become alliance members. In Romania, meanwhile, another 2,000 soldiers, 1,000 assistance personnel and 500 vehicles from 11 NATO nations are training within the alliance's so-called "Noble Jump 2017" drill that opened in Greece Monday. Poland, Romania and other countries on NATO's eastern flank are concerned for their security and defense following Russia's seizure of the Crimea Peninsula from Ukraine, and because of its support for rebels in eastern Ukraine and its air force activity over the Baltic Sea. To allay these concerns, NATO and the U.S. have deployed thousands of troops to the region and hold regular joint exercises there. About 300 troops traveling in a military convoy arrived in Romania from Bulgaria on Thursday. Other troops are expected to join in from bases in Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Norway and Albania. Noble Jump aims to show the deployment skills of NATO's Very High Readiness Joint Task Force, established after the 2014 NATO summit in Wales, to provide rapid response to threats on NATO's eastern flank. "While this is a first time that this particular set of exercises takes place in Romania, the desired effect is to practice the ability to deliver to our politicians the capability they've requested of us," Maj. Gen. Ian Cave, who commands the exercise, said in Giurgiu, on Romania's border with Bulgaria. The Romanian Ground Forces Chief of Staff, Brig. Gen. Marius Harabagiu, said the exercise is "extremely important because it demonstrates the capacity and the speed of reaction of this alliance to prevent the threats we face in this moment.

Holland's Barriers to The Sea

44:21
The Delta Works in the Netherlands (Holland) is the largest flood protection project in the world. This project consists of a number of surge barriers, for examples: 1- The Oosterscheldekering is the largest of the 13 ambitious Delta Works series of dams and storm surge barriers and it is the largest surge barrier in the world, 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) long. The dam is based on 65 concrete pillars with 62 steel doors, each 42 metres wide. It is designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding from the North Sea. 2- The Maeslantkering is a storm barrier with two movable arms; when the arms are open the waterway remains an important shipping route however when the arms close a protective storm barrier is formed for the city of Rotterdam. Closing the arms of the barrier is a completely automated process done without human intervention.
