Assistive Technology: Virtual Reality Therapy
The Therapeutic Gaming program at Craig Hospital is a joint effort of Craig’s donor-funded Assistive Technology, Therapeutic Recreation and Rehabilitation Engineering departments. The project’s goal is to use this popular mode of recreation and leisure to address social, physical and occupational therapy rehabilitation goals. Patients are referred to the program through their occupational, speech, or recreational therapist. They meet in one-on-one sessions with Assistive Technology therapists to explore their options. Once a week, therapists host a gaming night in a hospital Bistro, where any patient is able to drop by, check out the equipment, play games and enjoy refreshments. The primary goal of the program is to get the patient access to the game. Once access has been accomplished, therapists will modify the experience to make it more challenging, to help the patient work on his or her therapy goals of increasing balance, dexterity, strength or endurance. Increasing upper extremity ability though gaming can help with eating, dressing, bathing, and other functional activities. In this sense, the game motivates patients to make progress towards independence. The gaming project has the potential to nurture relationships established between Craig patients and allow them to stay in contact by gaming online after discharge and serve as motivation to return to a full and active life.

Bringing the F-Words to LIFE in a Therapeutic Recreation and Wellness Program
The LIFE (Leisure in Fun Environments) Program at the Rehabilitation Centre for Children (RCC) in Winnipeg provides therapeutic recreation programs using a family-centred developmental approach. Our program philosophy corresponds with the F-Words within a framework of Relationships and Guided Participation. Our program is fully funded by the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation, the fundraising arm of RCC. This presentation will describe how relationships and the Guided Participation Model (Vygotsky, Rogoff) are central to the design of our programs. Program environments are set up to meet each participant at their own level of ability, and facilitate independent thinking and decision making with a trusted guide. Program staff receive extensive and ongoing training in using this model. The LIFE Program has three components: 1. Active Living Centre: an equipment loan pool for short-term loan and extended trials 2. Summer Day Camps: for youth aged 12 – 21 3. RBC Therapeutic Recreation and Wellness Program: adapted and therapeutic recreation programs for children, youth and families Future program development includes caregiver training, partnering with other community programs for staff training, and developing volunteer opportunities for youth who have aged out of our centre. Learning objectives: 1. Application of client and family-centred practice in a therapeutic recreation setting 2. The F-Words in a framework of Relationships and Guided Participation For more information, go to http://ken.caphc.org/xwiki/bin/view/CAPHC+Presents%21/Bringing+the+F-Words+to+LIFE+in+a+Therapeutic+Recreation+and+Wellness+Program Handouts include: - Information about Guided Participation - Tasting Adventure log sheets (for a Cooking Club) - Program descriptions and components - Information on adapted equipment Presenter Carol Kehler, BMR-PT Carol has worked in a variety of settings over the past 25 years, with a primary focus on pediatrics. Benefits of Recreation Therapy at Recovery Ways | Utah Drug Rehab
People in early recovery learn how to overcome obstacles without using drugs or alcohol. Recreation therapy can also help with some co-occurring disorders such as PTSD, OCD, eating disorders, anxiety, and depression. Treating these disorders and the addiction together make relapse less likely. These activities also help recovering addicts become more personally responsible, develop their communication skills, learn problem-solving skills, and teamwork and support. These are all skills they can use in their new sober lifestyles as well as the activities they participate in. Recreational Therapist : Careers in Mental Health
This video is about Recreational Therapists and is part of a Mental Health Career video series created by the Oregon State Hospital Museum. www.oshmusuem.com/mental-health-careers https://oshmuseum.org/recreation-therapist/ Recreational therapy is a very important part of the recovery process for patients at the Hospital because it provides an outlet for those who need access to therapy types beyond the traditional talk therapy. Recreational therapists provide a space for patients to opt in and out of activities, creating self-motivated patients who are working towards personal goals and the acquisition of skills that can help modify specific emotional, mental, and social behaviors. Recreational therapists develop a good rapport with their patients and help them look into the future. This may simply be asking about their goals for themselves, or it may be taking the patient into the community that they know they will be discharged into in order to help them find access to resources like leisure activities and events. Recreational therapists also help patients with physical disabilities find ways to be active and successful through adaptations of equipment or by finding activities that best suit them.
