Debbie Sterling is an engineer and founder of GoldieBlox, a toy company out to inspire the next generation of female engineers. She has made it her mission in life to tackle the gender gap in science, technology, engineering and math. GoldieBlox is a book series+construction set that engages kids to build through the story of Goldie, the girl inventor who solves problems by building simple machines. Debbie writes and illustrates Goldie's stories, taking inspiration from her grandmother, one of the first female cartoonists and creator of ""Mr. Magoo."" Her company, launched in 2012, raised over $285,000 in 30 days through Kickstarter, and has been featured in numerous publications such as The Atlantic and Forbes. Prior to founding GoldieBlox, Debbie served as the Marketing Director of Lori Bonn, a national jewelry company. For the past 7 years, she has also served as a brand strategy consultant for a wide variety of organizations including Microsoft, T-Mobile, Organic Valley and the New York Knicks. This series 'Students of Product Design' is aimed at anyone interested in the product design process. This first episode looks at innovation, how to innovate and how simply changing the structure of the brief can impact on how innovative you can be. This series won't just talk about stuff, the plan is to share with you as many of the things I have learnt in the last 15 years (or so..) as possible through each stage of the design process to help you become far better designers than I can ever be. I'll be looking at research, sketching, model making, portfolios and a whole load of other things. I often think of youtube as a speed learning tool. Have you ever seen the Matrix films where Neo first learns martial arts by uploading a programme to his head or Trinity learns to fly a helicopter in minutes, that's how I see Youtube, Youtube is our version of the Matrix. So this series which is primarily aimed at students studying industrial design, product design or design engineering in university is designed to do just that, give you a knowledge boost to hopefully make your projects, designs, presentations and portfolio a lot better to improve your chances of getting a position as a designer, or your projects if you want to start your own company, anything related to design. I also hope with the content, that everyone will be able to take something away from it as many of the tips I'll give over the course of this series will be applicable to lots of areas of life. There's just isn't enough out there on product design, compared to say cookery shows it's very under provisioned and so I'm trying to redress the balance. In this video, he talks about the different rounds involved in the placement interview, and also shares some campus placement tips and suggestions. ABOUT THE COMPANY Qualcomm Incorporated is an American global semiconductor company that designs and markets wireless telecommunications products and services. The company headquarters are located in San Diego, California, United States. The company has 157 worldwide locations. The parent company is Qualcomm Incorporated (Qualcomm), which includes the Qualcomm Technology Licensing Division (QTL). Qualcomm's wholly owned subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. (QTI), operates substantially all of Qualcomm's R&D activities, as well as its product and services businesses, including its semiconductor business, Qualcomm CDMA Technologies.  Qualcomm has 5 offices in India, out of which 3 are technical and 2 are marketing based. The technical units are located in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai whereas the marketing units are in Delhi and Mumbai. Saurabh was offered a technical profile, that of an associate engineer at Bangalore. CAMPUS PLACEMENT PROCEDURE The campus placement procedure consists of 3 parts- A written test which is followed by a Placement interview which is both technical, and HR based. Written Test – The written test was divided into 3 sections – an aptitude test, a coding section and a technical section. The aptitude test was not very challenging, and candidates can prepare for it using aptitude books, such as those by Arun Sharma. The coding section included C and C++, for which candidates can use books by Yashwanth Khanelkar or Balaguruswamy for help. Technical Section- The questions were mainly from Analogue electronics, digital electronics and communication systems. In Analogue electronics, the questions were mainly about diodes, transistors and equations relating to them. One advice for aspirants would be to focus on learning the equations well and practicing questions related to them since the questions are objective. For Digital Electronics, candidates can focus on Boolean algebra. As for communications, questions relating to basic filters were also asked. Candidates must be sure of the concepts and apply formulas to the questions given. HR Round- Questions covered several personal areas such as the candidate’s family background, schooling, and why they wanted to join Qualcomm. Placement tips and suggestions here for aspirants would be to prepare for such questions beforehand using the resources available since they can be very helpful in the actual interview. PLACEMENT TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS 1) Be confident of your skills 2) Maintain a decent percentage, since the cut-off for Qualcomm was 70%. 3) Be thorough with your concepts and read them well. 4) Practice questions from other books, but first be clear with the concepts you’re studying. Nandini is currently pursuing B.Tech in Information Technology and has been placed in Adobe. Campus Placement process was open for Computer Science, Information Technology and Software. The campus placement process began with the following: 1. Online Test The company conducted an online test. The test comprised of two sections Section A was an aptitude test contained 50 questions to be completed in 60 minutes. This consisted Quantitative Aptitude and Logical Reasoning. Section B was an online coding test. It consisted of 7 questions based on data structures, reasoning and algorithms. It also had 20 Multiple Choice Questions based Database, arrays, pointers, operating systems etc. 2. Interview The campus placement process continued with technical, project and HR interviews. a. 1ST Technical Job Interview It comprised of 3 questions and they were: First a question on coding based on Discrete Mathematics and Graph Theory. Secondly a question on dynamic programming .Thirdly a question on Array Median Searching. There was a puzzle as well on probability and a question on computer graphics. The key to acing a technical job interview is to know that the interviewers are looking for a thought process and problem solving capability and not crammed up algorithms. b. 2nd Technical Job Interview The questions asked were based on Bit manipulation, another coding question based on pointers and operating systems. The last question was a famous 3 hand puzzle. c. Project Round A tip to ace this round of job interview would be to be thoroughly knowing one’s projects in an out. One should be able to explain everything in detail and know everything from scratch. Sound knowledge is very important. d. HR Interview The final stage in a campus placement is an HR interview, and getting through to a company is possible if you can hit the ball out of the park in this job interview. Usually the questions are like tell me about yourself, where you see yourself in 5 years, why do you want to join this company. Concluding Tips 1. Prepare topics like Operating Systems, Data Structures, and Databases. 2. Be thorough with basics and that hold validity for all campus placement processes. 3. Use online resources like geeksforgeeks and careercup. 4. Use books like ‘Cracking Coding interview by Gayle Laakmann Mcdowell and ‘Data Structures and Algorithms Made Easy Narasimha Karumanchi.’ 5. Be confident during the job interview and one can definitely sale through the campus placement process and get selected. DIT's Product Design programme is the first of its kind in Ireland. Graduates of the programme have gone on to a variety of successful careers in Ireland and abroad. In the course of this four year honours degree, students are immersed in the various disciplines of product design through a unique interdisciplinary approach -- students develop their knowledge and skill sets through modules in the areas of design, engineering and business. This integrated method produces product designers who have the ability and confidence to be both creative and innovative in whatever role they choose to pursue. It gives them the necessary ability to face the challenges of designing new products and bringing them to market. Graduates of the program have proven themselves. equally comfortable in the design studio, the engineering office and the boardroom. Students learn how to produce accurate physical models of their designs using the extensive studio and prototyping facilities. They also use industry standard design software to bring their projects to fruition. In the capstone module of the programme, students conceptualise, design and develop a novel product. A number of students have developed successful products in this project which they have gone on to pursue and develop further upon graduation. While the final project is important for the students' individual development, a series of team projects over the course of the program help the students to develop interpersonal skills along with an appreciation of team dynamics. Students of the programme have won and been shortlisted for prestigious national and international awards including the Enterprise Ireland All Ireland Student Enterprise Awards, the James Dyson award, the International Forum for Design Concept awards in Hannover, Germany and the Staples Global Eco-easy Challenge in Washington DC, USA. Students of the programme have won and are regular finalists in the DIT Bolton Trust Student Enterprise awards in which they must demonstrate the ability to form their own company, design and develop a new product and produce a viable business plan in tandem. Toyota moving 1,550 jobs out of northern Kentucky

ERLANGER, Ky. (Angenette Levy) -- Toyota will move more than 1,500 jobs out of Erlanger as it takes steps to consolidate its North American operations. 1,000 jobs will be moved from the Erlanger to a new state-of-the-art facility in Plano, Texas. 300 jobs will be moved to the plant in Georgetown and 250 jobs will be moved to a facility near Ann Arbor, Michigan. The jobs include engineering, procurement and production engineering positions. Jobs from California will also move to Texas. The move is expected to be complete between 2016 and 2017. "This transition will strengthen our ability to put our customers first and to continue making great products that exceed their expectations," said Carrie Chandler, a Toyota spokesperson. Employees who left the Erlanger facility on Monday declined to comment. They learned of the news earlier in the day. City officials and members of the business community in northern Kentucky said they were taken by surprise. "I was blind-sided. I didn't know about it at all. We have really regular and very good communications with the people at Toyota so it came as kind of a shock," said Erlanger Mayor Tom Rouse. Rouse said he had heard a rumor about Toyota and Texas Sunday night from a friend on Facebook. He and others found out about the company leaving from the media. He said the city will lose $1.3 million annually in payroll taxes and other fees. Some small business owners said they will also lose. "I see dollar signs walking out of my business. That's the first thing that comes to mind," said Jim Ferreri, owner of Tsunami Sushi in Crestview Hills. Ferreri said he delivers lunches to Toyota and many of its employees are customers. Employees and owners of other small businesses say they will miss the business from Toyota and its employees. Members of the business community who work to draw businesses to the region said they were disappointed by the news. "From an economic development picture, yeah, not the type of news you want to hear," said Dan Tobergte, CEO of Northern Kentucky Tri-Ed. Meanwhile, Mayor Rouse said Erlanger will survive Toyota leaving and he is confident another company will want to move into the facility. But, he's concerned about the people who work there. "I feel sorry for the people who are being affected by this. I'm sorry for the people who are either going to have to move to Texas or move to Michigan... Or go home without a job," Rouse said. Local 12 News asked Toyota representatives if the number of flights out of CVG factored into the decision to move. Carrie Chandler responded: "First and foremost, the move is a business decision about how we can accelerate the 'One Toyota' vision established by our company president. A neutral location was needed. One without an existing Toyota presence - where we can build our vision from the ground up, based on the Toyota Way." But, Mayor Rouse said a Toyota representative told him the number of flights had an effect on the decision to move although it wasn't the main reason. "I think it was a factor. I blame Delta. We built the airport for them and they made promises and then they broke those promises and this is part of the after effect of Delta turning its nose on the greater Cincinnati area," Mayor Rouse said. The Worst Roofing Job I have Ever Seen in 25 Years of Repairing Roofs and Roof Inspections. We do professional roof inspection for home owners who are in the process of buyinig a new home and sometimes we get a call from a client who is in the middle of having their roof done or their new roof was just completed and they want to make sure that they are getting the type of roofing job they are paying. This customer was getting pressured by the roofer to make the final payment and he just wasn't sure that the quality of the roofing was up to par. He wanted to have the piece of mind of getting the roofing job professionally inspected BEFORE making that final payment to the roofer. And, that was the best decision he could have made. The customer had inform me of a few red flags he was aware of that happened during the initial install. Even the roofer he choose was highly referred and had a lot of good reviews he saw on the internet he still needed us to make sure he didn't get ripped off. I hope this never happens to anyone else.
Shauna: Engineering with Product Design student discusses her degree course

We met with Shauna, a final-year student from the University of Liverpool and asked her about her degree course and how this relates to her graduate jobs search. Shauna identified manufacturing and product design as an area of particular interest during her time at the University of Liverpool. Shauna discusses her preferred industry sectors and how her degree course has helped her focus on career opportunities within the nuclear industry. Shauna also describes how her course ensures is IMechE accredited and how this can help her gain chartership. Our interview with Shauna was part of a series of interviews in which we met with students in their final-year of study before they graduate in Summer 2015.

Tesla engineering job openings are up 243% in Q1 2018 compared to 2017

Data gathered by professional networking website LinkedIn recently revealed that Tesla has been ramping up its hiring efforts, especially for its engineering jobs. During the first quarter of 2018, Tesla had 865 engineering-related job openings, a 243% increase from the same period last year. According to LinkedIn editor Queenie Wong, the sudden influx of engineering job openings at Tesla might seem radical, but it should not come as a shock. Tesla, after all, is currently engaged in its most ambitious project yet — mass producing its most disruptive vehicle to date, the Model 3. Considering that Tesla is showing no signs of slowing down, and the company’s plans of expanding its vehicle lineup to the Model Y, Semi, next-gen Roadster, and a yet-to-be-named truck, the company needs an ever-growing workforce to support its goals. In a statement to LinkedIn, Autotrader and Kelley Blue Book executive publisher Karl Brauer noted that Tesla’s nature of being part tech company and part carmaker means that it is always hungry for talent, particularly in the engineering department. “Some argue that Tesla is a tech company while others argue it’s an automaker, but it’s certainly at the crossroads of those two. It’s not surprising that they’re very hungry for talented engineering individuals who can help them get to where they want to go,” Brauer said. According to SAE International chief product officer Frank Menchaca, the engineers that Tesla is looking for must have multiple skills in emerging technologies. In a posting for a design engineer opening, for example, the Elon Musk-led company wrote that the position requires someone who can function as a “hybrid of a mechanical engineer, software engineer, and electrical engineer” who has strong competencies in manufacturing concepts. “Those skill sets are around the ability for engineers to integrate software, cybersecurity and user experience, that if you dial the clock back 20 years, traditional mechanical engineers didn’t have to think about,” Menchaca said. Overall, it is this dynamic nature of Tesla that appears to be incredibly attractive to applicants, and why the company made LinkedIn’s list of top companies that American professionals like to work for. Tesla outranked some of the world’s largest brands like Apple and Disney, with LinkedIn tracking 500,000 job applicants to the company over 2017. Back in January, Elon Musk personally extended an invitation to interested applicants who would like to work in Gigafactory 1 using his personal Twitter account. Earlier last month, Tesla also posted an opening for a Mechanical Design Engineer for the Model Y, the company’s upcoming crossover SUV that’s expected to start production in 2019. Tesla’s Gigafactory 2 in Buffalo, a facility designed to produce the company’s Solar Roof tiles and photovoltaic panels, is also ramping up hiring. The company is expected to hold five information sessions over the next month.
