Space and Planning Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen gets right down to the fundamentals of design in this fascinating back-to-basics series. He tackles real problems in real homes as he explores six themes: space, colour, light, texture and pattern, balance and order, and personality. In addition to his own in-depth knowledge of design principles, Laurence calls on a colour forecaster, psychologists and a perception specialist to explain and demonstrate the science behind the how and the why. Taking a real home where a design problem is all too apparent, he demonstrates some simple psychology and basic experiments in a 'design lab' back at the studio -- and it's all done without knocking down walls or spending big bucks. Space comes under the spotlight in the first programme. Lack of space is a common problem in British homes which, surprisingly, have 20 square metres less space than Japanese homes, with an average of only 120 square metres. "The cardinal sin that the British indulge in beyond any other nation is the concept of agoraphobic furniture that feels it needs to keep its back against the wall at all times in case something unpleasant happens to it!" quips Laurence. By painting the walls a paler colour, bringing the outside inside by strategically placing an eye-catching object outside the window and switching to light-reflecting flooring, the brain is deluded into thinking that the room is bigger. Suddenly, the crowded living room is calmer and seems larger -- thanks to a little bit of science and the tricks of design rules. Eye brain specialist Dr Ione Fine comments: "Half of interior design is illusion."And on a practical note, Laurence shows why it's better to buy a couple of two-seater sofas -- because three people never sit on a three-seater! Please, enjoy it!

Architecture, landscape, urbanism . . . we are at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, which takes an enlightened and comprehensive view of “designed” environments and how they interrelate. But—David Netto GSD ’97 asks—how many of you have ever been taught how to make a furniture plan? How to light a room? The secrets of proportion and texture, and the breaking of rules in animating an interior? These are questions Netto has never found a satisfactory answer to in school—any school; one only learns about them from experience in the workplace. The practical truth is that how a project is perceived is key to how it is received—and essential to whether or not it gets published, written about, and given a fair trial after its transition from an abstract hypothetical to real life. Netto has worked as an interior designer for decades and has written about architecture and design history for just as long. He professes to have learned as much from writing about the work of others as from formal education in design. His latest book is about the French designer François Catroux, who since 1968 has innovated and excelled in a career of nearly fifty years with no formal design education whatsoever (he credits Philip Johnson as a formative influence and is presently working with Diller Scofidio & Renfro on an apartment in New York). In the course of his talk, Netto will address the importance of interiors in the success of architecture and his observations on how this gets accomplished, based on what he has learned in his work as a design journalist.

Bold design and statement finishes transform a dated kitchen into a character-filled space. See how homeowner Millie Samanski collaborated with designer Linnea Lions to achieve her dream kitchen. Working with a long and narrow layout, Linnea brightened the space by adding double doors that lead to the backyard. Black and white patterned flooring adds graphic punch, while dark lower cabinets contribute to the contrasting palette. The kitchen extends to a dining area where a bench is surrounded by cabinets for additional storage. Brass details, found in the hardware, light fixture and hand-painted radiator, bring glamor to the space. The result is simply stunning.

Peyton Lambton explains basic color theory and how to use colors to transform a room. One thing that she hears from folks all the time is that they want to add more color to their home, but they are afraid of overdoing it. Have no fear, she’ll show you foolproof steps for combining color in your home. Peyton loves the color blue and she thinks it should be in every bedroom, since it is calming and tranquil. Here are three different ways to incorporate blue into your home’s decor with three unique color palettes. First, you should follow the 60-30-10 rule. This rule simply means that the room should be broken into 60% of a dominant color, 30% of a secondary color, and 10% of an accent color. Let’s get started! First, the cool & monochrome palette. This palette is made of several shades of the same color, from soft to super saturated tones. A monochromatic palette works well in any room, but it is especially calming in cool blues for the bedroom. To pull this look off, be sure to find a balance of the various shades of blue; from the bedding, to the table lamps, and the wall art to pillows. Roughly 60% is the medium blue, while the dark blue makes up 30% of the room, and the lightest blues are 10%. Next, try complementary colors. If you have watched my other videos, you might know that orange and blue is my go-to color scheme. These colors are opposite on the color wheel, like red and green or yellow and purple, which also go well together. Tip! If you plan on painting, she’d recommend painting a sample on a large wall and checking in to see how the color looks at various times of the day—in the bright morning sun, the direct afternoon light, and the warm after-dinner sunset. Lastly the analogous color palette includes the most colors. Analogous colors are next to each other on the color wheel, such as red, purple, and blue. Peyton recommends selecting select up to six colors that are next to each other on the color wheel for this look, but no more than six. Many people choose this type of palette because it showcases all of their favorite colors. Add neutral hues to balance the space, or go bold for a dramatic look. We hope you learned something and feel ready to incorporate colors into your decor! Thanks for watching! Find these products and more at Wayfair.com! See how designer Carly Nemtean of Carriage Lane Designs transformed a ’70s-style bungalow into a bright open-concept home. Tour the mid-century modern space with soaring ceilings, sleek finishes and floods of natural light. To start, the designer created a new, functional layout for the space. Carly relocated the kitchen next to the dining room to take advantage of additional storage, and installed flat-panelled white cabinets. White lighting pendants that hover over the elongated kitchen island and stainless steel appliances complete the clean, crisp look. The neighboring dining room is decorated with a monochromatic palette of greys, black and walnut, with pops of blue. The family room is sophisticated and glamorous. Pieces like a deep blue sofa, geometric coffee table and knitted floor poufs create a stylish and liveable space.
