Principles Of Architectural Design - Unity
Visit our website at https://excelsiorclasses.com Course Description: Learn to see, draw, and think like an architect! This semester-long course will introduce students to architectural drafting and design through drawing exercises. Students will learn the different types of drawing that architects use to facilitate design thinking and representation. Beginning with drawing from observation, exercises in line, shape, value, and form will foster an understanding of geometric characteristics, then skills and conventions of representation with drafting will be taught. Weekly assignments will consist of a sketchbook or drafting assignment as well as a reading requirement. A weekly assessment will account for the completion of the reading assignment. Three projects will be done during the semester. For the final design project students will create architectural drawings consisting of plan, section, and elevation. Students will present their projects in the final class. This course is a prerequisite for Architectural Drafting & Design II. This presentation was recorded at GOTO London 2016 http://gotoldn.com Eoin Woods - CTO at Endava ABSTRACT Security is an ever more important topic for system designers. As our world becomes digital, today’s safely-hidden back office system is tomorrow’s public API, open to anyone on the Internet with a hacking tool and time on their hands. So the days of hoping that security is someone else’s problem are over. The security community has developed a well understood set of principles used to build systems that are secure (or at least securable) by [...] Download slides and read the full abstract here: https://gotocon.com/london-2016/presentations/show_talk.jsp?oid=7928 https://twitter.com/gotoldn https://www.facebook.com/GOTOConference http://gotocon.com

7 principles for building better cities | Peter Calthorpe
More than half of the world's population already lives in cities, and another 2.5 billion people are projected to move to urban areas by 2050. The way we build new cities will be at the heart of so much that matters, from climate change to economic vitality to our very well-being and sense of connectedness. Peter Calthorpe is already at work planning the cities of the future and advocating for community design that's focused on human interaction. He shares seven universal principles for solving sprawl and building smarter, more sustainable cities. SOLID Design Principles Introduction
In this video we will discuss 1. SOLID Acronym and Introduction 2. SOLID design principles 3. Why SOLID SOLID Introduction 1. SOLID principles are the design principles that enable us manage most of the software design problems 2. The term SOLID is an acronym for five design principles intended to make software designs more understandable, flexible and maintainable 3. The principles are a subset of many principles promoted by Robert C. Martin 4. The SOLID acronym was first introduced by Michael Feathers SOLID Acronym S : Single Responsibility Principle (SRP) O : Open closed Principle (OSP) L : Liskov substitution Principle (LSP) I : Interface Segregation Principle (ISP) D : Dependency Inversion Principle (DIP) Single Responsibility Principle 1. Robert C. Martin expresses the principle as, "A class should have only one reason to change” 2.Every module or class should have responsibility over a single part of the functionality provided by the software, and that responsibility should be entirely encapsulated by the class Liskov Substitution Principle 1. Introduced by Barbara Liskov state that “objects in a program should be replaceable with instances of their sub-types without altering the correctness of that program” 2. If a program module is using a Base class, then the reference to the Base class can be replaced with a Derived class without affecting the functionality of the program module 3. We can also state that Derived types must be substitutable for their base types Open/Closed Principle 1. “Software entities should be open for extension, but closed for modification” 2. The design and writing of the code should be done in a way that new functionality should be added with minimum changes in the existing code 3. The design should be done in a way to allow the adding of new functionality as new classes, keeping as much as possible existing code unchanged Interface Segregation Principle 1. “Many client-specific interfaces are better than one general-purpose interface” 2.We should not enforce clients to implement interfaces that they don't use. Instead of creating one big interface we can break down it to smaller interfaces Dependency Inversion Principle 1. One should “depend upon abstractions, [not] concretions" 2. Abstractions should not depend on the details whereas the details should depend on abstractions 3. High-level modules should not depend on low level modules If we don’t follow SOLID Principles we 1. End up with tight or strong coupling of the code with many other modules/applications 2. Tight coupling causes time to implement any new requirement, features or any bug fixes and some times it creates unknown issues 3. End up with a code which is not testable 4. End up with duplication of code 5. End up creating new bugs by fixing another bug 6. End up with many unknown issues in the application development cycle Following SOLID Principles helps us to 1. Achieve reduction in complexity of code 2. Increase readability, extensibility and maintenance 3. Reduce error and implement Reusability 4. Achieve Better testability 5. Reduce tight coupling Solution to develop a successful application depends on Architecture : choosing an architecture is the first step in designing application based on the requirements. Example : MVC, WEBAPI, MVVM..etc Design Principles : Application development process need to follow the design principles Design Patterns : We need to choose correct design patterns to build the software If you are confused on how we can apply these design principles in the application development? Don’t worry as we are going to take a look at them in greater details in the upcoming videos. In the next video we will discuss single responsibility principle in detail with a sample example. Democratic by Design: Guiding Principles for Federal Architecture
http://gsa.gov/designexcellence In 1962, President Kennedy authorized the Guiding Principles for Federal Architecture, written by Daniel Patrick Moynihan to raise Americans' expectations of federal buildings.Democratic by Design: Guiding Principles for Federal Architecture commemorates the golden anniversary of this document, and celebrates its positive impact on government's investment in the public realm. With narration by Luke Russert, the film features leading thinkers and practitioners in American architecture, who recount Senator Moynihan's criteria for design. Surveying the work of GSA's Public Buildings Service and other federal agencies, these commentators also examine the ways the guiding principles are interpreted to maximize the benefits of federal architecture. Democratic by Design is both a retrospective of a seminal policy achievement and a road map for another 50 years of excellence. Democratic by Design reflects the special role of public buildings in American life. They aid in delivery of vital services, and they define roles and values of our society.

Architecture, art and design - 100 years of the Bauhaus (1/3) | DW Documentary
How has the Bauhaus school of architecture and design, Germany’s best-known art school, shaped the world we live in today? bauhausWORLD - The Effect (2/3): https://youtu.be/LW1415Ddf8c bauhausWORLD - The Utopia (3/3): Online on January 27, 2019 The three-part documentary bauhausWORLD marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of Germany’s best-known art, architecture and design school, the Bauhaus. Exploring the legacy of this iconic German institution, our film crew traveled the world, meeting architects, artists, urban planners, doers and dreamers. Do the Bauhaus’s social ideals and design principles still shape how we live today? New approaches to education and training, architecture, painting, dance and design were explored and developed at the Bauhaus. Its founder and director Walter Gropius attracted the leading creative figures of the era, including Hannes Meyer, Mies van der Rohe, Lyonel Feininger, Oskar Schlemmer, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, László Moholy-Nagy, Anni Albers, Josef Albers and Gunta Stölzl. Today, Bauhaus is considered the birthplace of Modernism and has become a byword for sleek, functional design. Founded in Weimar in 1919, the Bauhaus school moved to Dessau in 1925 and then to Berlin, where it was forced to shut in 1933 after Hitler seized power. Most of its artists, architects and visionaries emigrated, fanning out and spreading the Bauhaus doctrine around the world. Filmmaker Lydia Ranke and her team traveled the world to make the three-part documentary bauhausWORLD. Alongside the Bauhaus sites of Weimar, Dessau and Berlin, they visited cities such as Tokyo, Amman, Tel Aviv, New York, Chicago, Mexico City and Medellín, talking to experts from architects Norman Foster and Tatiana Bilbao to architecture critic Mark Wigley, furniture designer Yinka Ilori and fashion designer Kasia Kucharska. "The Code" is the first part of bauhausWORLD. The search for the secret of Bauhaus’s enduring success leads all the way to Japan - a journey illustrating how the forced closure of the school that drove the movement into exile served to spread its philosophy around the world. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. David Netto: “Designing Interiors (The Part They Forgot to Tell You About)”
Architecture, landscape, urbanism . . . we are at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, which takes an enlightened and comprehensive view of “designed” environments and how they interrelate. But—David Netto GSD ’97 asks—how many of you have ever been taught how to make a furniture plan? How to light a room? The secrets of proportion and texture, and the breaking of rules in animating an interior? These are questions Netto has never found a satisfactory answer to in school—any school; one only learns about them from experience in the workplace. The practical truth is that how a project is perceived is key to how it is received—and essential to whether or not it gets published, written about, and given a fair trial after its transition from an abstract hypothetical to real life. Netto has worked as an interior designer for decades and has written about architecture and design history for just as long. He professes to have learned as much from writing about the work of others as from formal education in design. His latest book is about the French designer François Catroux, who since 1968 has innovated and excelled in a career of nearly fifty years with no formal design education whatsoever (he credits Philip Johnson as a formative influence and is presently working with Diller Scofidio & Renfro on an apartment in New York). In the course of his talk, Netto will address the importance of interiors in the success of architecture and his observations on how this gets accomplished, based on what he has learned in his work as a design journalist.
