Pragmatic Performance: When to care about perf, and what to do about it - David Wengier

54:04
As a developer you often here both that performance is important, but also that you shouldn't worry about performance up front, so when is the right time to think about it? And if the time is right, what are you actually supposed to do? If you're interested to hear about a pragmatic approach to performance, this talk will explain when is the right time to think about benchmarking, but more importantly will run through how to correctly benchmark .NET code so any decisions made will be based on information about your code that is trustworthy. Additionally you'll also find out about some of the common, and some of the unknown, performance pitfalls of the .NET Framework and we'll discuss the true meaning behind the phrase "premature optimization is the root of all evil". How Brendan Rodgers is Building a Mini-Man City at Leicester City | Tactics Explained

08:31
How Brendan Rodgers is building a mini-Manchester City at Leicester City in the Premier League. The former Liverpool manager is back in the Premier League after a spell with Celtic and has already got his Leicester City playing his Guardiola-esque style in a 4-3-3. Brendan Rodgers took over from Claude Puel in February and has turned Leicester City’s season around beating Unai Emery’s Arsenal 3-0 in a recent Premier League game. Claude Puel was sacked on the 24th February 2019 following an uninspiring 16 months in charge. WIth Jamie Vardy and other players voicing their frustration at Claude Puel’s style, his sacking didn’t come as a surprise. Leicester City had played 27 league games and sat in 12th place, with no hope of silverware after being knocked out of the domestic cups by Manchester City and Newport County. 3 days later and Brendan Rodgers was appointed as Leicester City manager and walked away from a treble treble with Celtic. Brenden Rodgers stepping in at a key part of the season was vital, Leicester City went from securing staying up in the league to challenging for a Europa League spot with Wolves, Watford and Everton. Gaining the 4th most points in the league since joining, Brenden Rodgers has had an instant and immense impact at Leicester City. So how does Brendan Rodgers Leicester City style compare to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City? It all starts from the back, key to The Foxes build up is their goalkeeper and Kasper Schmeichel is deceptively good with the ball at his feet. He’s calm under pressure and can pick out teammates with long passes if his teammates are marked. In the recent clash with Arsenal, Schmeichel assisted Vardy’s first goal with a long punt up the pitch. Jamie Vardy, who has regained his top form under Rodgers, firing an incredible nine goals in eight games under the Northern Irish head coach. Belgium International Youri Tielemans has also contributed to six goals (three assists & three goals) in eight games from central midfield. Rodgers has been using Maddison and Tielemans ahead of Wilfrid Nidi The Nigerian defensive midfielder allows them to have the freedom to attack and breaks down play. The style is similar to Manchester City in terms of having Fernandinho holding, with two of Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne or David Silva. For Leicester City, Rodgers has Youri Tielmans & James Maddison in their roles, who like Man City’s attacking midfielders press high and receive the ball in pockets of space in their opponent’s half. For all his expansive play, Rodgers is still a pragmatic manager to some degree and he knows when he needs to change his style of play. Against superior opposition, Rodgers has pushed James Maddison to the left wing and bringing in an extra ball winner in Hamza Choudhury. They also look to go direct to Jamie Vardy in the channels, returning to the Leicester City of old. Finally, Rodgers has been adventurous from his bench and looked to take advantage of their opposition. After Arsenal had Maitland-Niles sent off Leicester went in at half time nil nil but Rodgers changed it. He brought Ndidi off pushed Choudhury to defensive midfield and Maddison into central midfield as he brought on Harvey Barnes, a very positive change and in the second half, Leicester created five big chances, three more than the first half and they went on to win the game 3-0. #LeicesterCity #BrendanRodgers #PremierLeague

Pry - Pragmatic Parser Combinators in D - Dmitry Olshansky | DConf2017

50:36
Abstract: Showing off how easy it is to create high performance parser generator library in the D programming language. The focus is on key enabling language features such as powerful compile-time features, UFCS for fluent DSL-style interface, CTFE for enabling true DSL - grammars. The motto of the talk is the beauty and power in the small, most code snippets are going to be short 1:1 expositions of the original library. Of course, expect some benchmarks and comparisons. Ever since std.regex work has landed in Phobos the author sought out to continue on to the next level - parser generators. The journey to the parsers was long postponed by real life and continuous work on std.regex. One of great displeasures with regex is that they are both under-powered (regular!) and needlessly complicated with all of backreferences, lookaround, greedy operators vs lazy operators and whatnot. Speaking of compile-time regex - it was a brilliant hack on top of existing (complex) infrastructure that while largely successful left a sour taste in the mouth. This brings us to the point where the burning desire for something simpler, more powerful and elegantly constructed comes to fruition. The talk showcases the internals of Pry - a new pragmatic parser combinator library written in D. The pragmatism here implies high performance and pay as you go principle. If there is anything that std.regex taught me is that performance is everything, there should be no reason to go and write parser by hand. But performance need not to be complex or ugly, in fact it's one point of the talk that simple and elegant could be fast. The library is organized in two layers - parser combinator (lower) layer and PEG grammar (higher) layer, each is designed to be usable by the end user. Each layer relies on unique abilities of D - parser combinators heavily rely on compile-time type manipulations and UFCS, PEG grammar layer runs full-blown parser at compile-time using CTFE. Lastly the talk will follow through some practical examples with benchmarks and closing thoughts of future directions. Slides (PDF): http://dconf.org/2017/talks/olshansky.pdf Speaker Bio: Dmitry Olshansky is a young all-around researcher and software engineer. He's been a long-time D language contributor with the most notable contribution being std.regex and std.uni modules of the standard library. Aside from everything D related his main interests are compilers, text processing, robotics, parallel and concurrent programming, scalable network systems and AI. CppCon 2014: Titus Winters "The Philosophy of Google's C++ Code"

01:00:04
http://www.cppcon.org — Presentation Slides, PDFs, Source Code and other presenter materials are available at: https://github.com/CppCon/CppCon2014 -- The Google C++ Style Guide is a fairly popular guide for C++ coding practices, both at Google and externally, but some of its recommendations often seem dated and have created controversy and perceived tension with more modern C++ In this talk we will focus on the core philosophies underlying that guide, ranging from the common (be consistent) to the unusual (leave an explicit trace for the reader), and debunk the idea that Google's C++ is anything less than modern. We'll discuss how these core ideas inform contentious rules like "No non-const references" and "Don't use exceptions," and how the application of those rules has worked for us in practice, both as developers and reliability engineers (SREs). -- Titus Winters has spent the past 3 years working on Google's core C++ libraries. He's particularly interested in issues of large scale software engineer and codebase maintenance: how do we keep a codebase of over 100M lines of code consistent and flexible for the next decade? Along the way he has helped Google teams pioneer techniques to perform automated code transformations on a massive scale, and helps maintain the Google C++ Style Guide. -- Videos Filmed & Edited by Bash Films: http://www.BashFilms.com

Middle-aged graffiti elders are still picking up the spray

05:06
(31 Jul 2012) LEADIN: Graffiti art was a radical form of expression that changed the landscape of New York's streets in the 1970s and 80s. Three decades on, many of the original graffiti artists are still spray painting their feelings and creating art on New York's streets despite their middle-aged responsibilities. STORYLINE: In torn jeans and saddled with a black backpack, Andrew Witten glances up and down the street for police, and then whips out his black marker pen and scribbles "Zephyr" on a wall. Witten was part of a generation of urban latchkey kids who spray-painted their initials all over Manhattan in the 1970s and '80s. Now the artistic rebels that transformed the city's urban landscape, and art scene are coming of age - middle age, that is. But the 51-year-old single father is having trouble putting away his spray paint can. Now revered as a graffiti elder, Witten says it is the only time he feels free. "I'm chronologically old to be out there doing it. I'm sure I can't run quite as fast. But it's the only time that I feel completely free actually," he says. Witten built a reputation as a master at spray-painting extravagant graffiti pieces on freight and subway trains, called train-bombing, in the neighbourhoods where he now teaches his 6-year-old daughter, Lulu, to skateboard. For him, spray-painting other people's property with his nickname, or tag, is almost an addiction, and danger is part of the drug. Crawling under barbed wire, ducking from police officers, even being shot at is all part of the experience. But he is all too aware of the consequences of being caught by the police for expressing himself on public property when he is a single father caring for his daughter. "I'm ready. I could go tonight. But I have to be pragmatic and look at the benefits if I go tonight and the risks. And because of my daughter that wouldn't be the responsible thing to do because she needs her father and in jail I'm not much use as a father," he says. But with an artist's heart, Witten describes painting graffiti in more poetic terms. He calls it a freeing experience, in which the silence of night gives way to the hiss and mist of the spray rising into the moonlight. On a tour of past works of graffiti, Witten says something from 1994 is a rarity: usually work would be spray painted over, or cleaned away. Witten's brush with fame now often comes with his freelance art writing and his sporadic visits to his daughter's school, where he teaches her classmates how to draw. Lulu knows her father draws "crazy art," a term she picked up from seeing graffiti on trains. "Well she's a big fan of graffiti but she has her own name for it which is 'crazy art' which she came up with on her own," he says. Angel Ortiz recently served 41 days of a 50-day sentence in the Rikers Island jail system after being busted for spraying his tag, LA Roc, on a billboard in March last year. For decades, 45-year-old Ortiz, has been known on Manhattan's Lower East Side as LA Roc. A traumatic loss of a girlfriend brought him out of a 14-year hiatus from graffiti writing. He has since been caught three times spraying his tag on property, each time while walking a friend's dog. The streets are his canvasses he says. He usually scribbles with black marker pen, "LA Roc", and was doing this when he was caught by police. When a pair of police officers smelled the fresh paint and nabbed Ortiz, they asked if he saw himself as too old to be doing graffiti. But even now, Ortiz keeps a spray can or marker in his pocket to satisfy that incessant itch to tag mailboxes, signs and fire hydrants. Graffiti documentary maker and photographer Henry Chalfant looks back at Ortiz's heyday as a revolutionary time period in street art. Pragmatic GDAL

08:18
Notes and code can be found at http://RobLabs.com/blog http://RobLabs.com/gdal/2016/12/15/Pragmatic-GDAL/ GDAL GDAL is a translator library for raster and vector geospatial data formats. There are API documentation for C and C++. There are Node.js bindings and Python bindings and a Python cookbook There are several great tools for the command line and API’s that you can use to wrangle your geodata. The example that we will be discussing is raster GeoTIFFs from the US Forest Service FSTopo Raster Gateway. Learning with Mt Whitney Since we are working straight from the command line, we can start by calling commands to fetch to our GeoTIFFs. We have examples for wget and curl. You can use the FSTopo Raster Gateway if you prefer, but you can also start with the page that shows FSTopos near Mt Whitney. gdalinfo With gdalinfo you can obtain great metadata about your file gdal_translate Translating our GeoTIFF to other formats is useful, so we can use gdal_translate to perform operations. One caveat is that when you translate out of GeoTIFF, then you lose all geospatial information.

Building Pragmatic User Interfaces in Haskell with HsQML

54:14
Speaker: Robin KAY. London Haskell user group. 26th November 2014. This talk demonstrates the basics of using the HsQML library to build rich cross-platform graphical user interfaces for Haskell programs. HsQML is a Haskell binding to Qt 5, a popular C++ framework for writing desktop and mobile applications. Distinctively, the binding focuses on leveraging Qt's own domain specific language (QML) for describing user interfaces and closely coupling that environment to Haskell rather than exposing Qt's functionality directly. This trade-off was a pragmatic choice versus reimplementing more of the UI stack in Haskell and in return offers fluid access to Qt's widget library and design tools. The talk illustrates, via a worked example, how to describe user interfaces using QML and then bring them to life by data-binding against Haskell code. The split between front and back ends invites a comparison with the web, but the two pieces are much more intimately coupled. Hence, we seek as much as possible for QML to be a lightweight skin over the underlying Haskell business logic and use the best tool for each job.

Pragmatic Accessibility: A How-To Guide for Teams (Google I/O '17)

40:40
Making your site more accessible can be a daunting task. If you are approaching accessibility for the first time, the sheer breadth of the topic can leave you wondering where to start - after all, working to accommodate a diverse range of abilities means there are a correspondingly diverse range of issues to consider. This talk will explain how to effectively review a site for accessibility and how to build accessibility considerations into your team process so each team member knows their role, and has the appropriate training material. The goal is for attendees to walk away with an actionable process which they can immediately use to assess and improve their products' accessibility and overall user experience. For your works created after January 1, 1978, copyright protection lasts for your life plus an additional 70 years. If the work is anonymous, the term is the shorter of 95 years from publication or 120 years from creation. To determine the duration of copyright protection for a particular work, see chapter 3 of the Copyright Act (title 17 of the United States Code). The last thing that you need to worry about while creating a video is copyright infringement and the penalties associated with it. Avoid all of the legal issues by having releases ready to be signed before recording any video, audio or still photos, and by buying, obtaining permission to use, or creating your own pieces to use in the video (images, sound effects, music, etc.). When your video is finished, protect your creation by using a copyright notice and registering your work with the U.S. Copyright Office. It is easier to deal with the legal issues prior to video recording than to face the legal issues after you’ve done all of the work. .................................Thanks for Watching............................ ........................Please Subscribe for more Videos................. José Mourinho has been sacked by Manchester United after overseeing the club's worst start to a campaign for 28 years. The Portuguese coach was often criticised for the team's pragmatic playing style and his treatment of some players, leading to many tense exchanges during his meetings with the press. Mourinho started his two-year tenure at Old Trafford by winning two trophies – the League Cup and Europa League – but failed to win silverware in his second season before their dreadful start to his third campaign David Squires on ... BYZANTINE ARCHITECTURE | History of architecture

04:16
Byzantine architecture is the architecture of the Byzantine Empire, also known as the Later Roman or Eastern Roman Empire. Byzantine architecture was mostly influenced by Roman and Greek architecture and later Sassanian and Islamic influences to an extent. This terminology is used by modern historians to designate the medieval Roman Empire as it evolved as a distinct artistic and cultural entity centered on the new capital of Constantinople rather than the city of Rome and environs. The empire endured for more than a millennium, dramatically influencing Medieval architecture throughout Europe and the Near East, and becoming the primary progenitor of the Renaissance and Ottoman architectural traditions that followed its collapse. Buildings increased in geometric complexity, brick and plaster were used in addition to stone in the decoration of important public structures, classical orders were used more freely, mosaics replaced carved decoration, complex domes rested upon massive piers, and windows filtered light through thin sheets of alabaster to softly illuminate interiors. Most of the surviving structures are sacred in nature, with secular buildings mostly known only through contemporaneous descriptions. Introduction to Pragmatic Functional PHP

42:16
bbujisic Functional programming is a paradigm with origins in lambda calculus and the 1930's. Stack Overflow's developer surveys from both 2017 and 2018 show that the languages optimized for functional programming are low in popularity. However, the same survey recognizes that developers actually working in Elixir, Clojure, F#, and Haskell, actually love their languages much more than PHP or C developers. So functional programming is unpopular but fun! The good news is that it can be applied in a popular language like PHP. Whilst the bad news is that PHP might not be really optimized for functional programming, we already have pretty nice libraries of functional primitives for PHP. Accepting functional programming style promises to help PHP developers develop a bit cleaner or more interesting code. More importantly, it will make it a whole lot easier to pick up a purely functional language (Hello, Haskell!) or make use of serverless architectures such as AWS Lambda. This session will cover: Introduction to lambda calculus with its historical context Basic principles of functional programming Performance, compared to imperative programming style Reusability, compared to object-oriented coding Overview of the contributed libraries of functional primitives (e.g. lstrojny/functional-php) Combination of object-oriented and functional concepts FTW Serverless computing as one of the great applications for the functional programming paradigm The target audience for the session would be juniors or students interested in learning about the logic behind the decision which approach or language to choose to solve a problem. It would also be informational and fun for experienced PHP developers to join, especially if they consider switching to a functional language for a project. https://2018.badcamp.org/session/introduction-pragmatic-functional-php

ITT 2016 - Kevlin Henney - Seven Ineffective Coding Habits of Many Programmers

46:29
Habits help you manage the complexity of code. You apply existing skill and knowledge automatically to the detail while focusing on the bigger picture. But because you acquire habits largely by imitation, and rarely question them, how do you know your habits are effective? Many of the habits that programmers have for naming, formatting, commenting and unit testing do not stand up as rational and practical on closer inspection. Kevlin Henney examines seven coding habits that are not as effective as programmers believe, and to suggest alternatives. www.istanbultechtalks.com

Pragmatic Functional Refactoring with Java 8

51:27
You may be hearing a lot of buzz around functional programming. For example, Java 8 recently introduced new features (lambda expressions and method references) and APIs (Streams, Optional and CompletableFutures) inspired from functional ideas such as first-class functions, composition and immutability. However, what does this mean for my existing codebase? In this talk we show how you can refactor your traditional object-oriented Java to using FP features and APIs from Java 8 in a beneficial manner. We will discuss: - How to adapt to requirement changes using first-class functions - How you can enhance code reusability using currying - How you can make your code more robust by favouring immutability over mutability - How you can design better APIs and reduce unintended null pointer exceptions using an optional data type Authors: Richard Warburton Richard Warburton is a software developer who loves solving complex problems, but actively challenges how much of software development is dealing with day-to-day trivialities. Having obtained a PhD in the area of compiler optimizations and static analysis, he has been applying his abilities in industry. Initially on bytecode analysis software, and more recently on Java performance tuning tools. He actively involves himself in the London Java Community, and its Java Community Process Committee. He has been helping with the push to improve and complete the JSR 310 API and the expand community engagement with JSR 335. Raoul Urma Raoul-Gabriel Urma is a PhD candidate in Computer Science at the University of Cambridge. His research centers on programming languages and software engineering. He is an author of the upcoming book Java 8 in Action: Lambdas, Streams, and functional-style programming published by Manning. In addition, Raoul has written over 10 peer-reviewed articles and given over 20 technical talks at international conferences. He has worked for large companies such as Google, eBay, Oracle, and Goldman Sachs, as well as for several startup projects.

The Importance of Nonverbal Cues as told by "Friends"

04:33
The constant miscommunication that occurs online is a direct result of the absence of nonverbal cues, not able to translate across a computer screen. "Friends" is the perfect example of how important these nonverbal cues can be in the interpretation of messages. Also, "Friends" goes to show that face-to-face communication is a much better alternative over digital communication in ensuring proper communication.

Rig Rundown - Wayne Krantz

Article and photos: http://bit.ly/WayneKrantzRR Premier Guitar caught up with Wayne Krantz in Nashville at City Winery on the first date of his two-month tour to discuss his pragmatic approach to gear. Wayne Krantz goes live without a net, touring with a single guitar, an S-style loaner from John Suhr. The Suhr has a very useable whammy bar, maple neck, and Suhr ML (Michael Landau) vintage-style single-coil pickups. Krantz opts for big-top/ skinny-bottom D’Addario strings (.011, .013, .017, .026, .032, .038). During his Nashville show Krantz plugged into a stock Fender Blues DeVille 2x12 on loan from his driver. He ran out of the Fender into his personal amp, a Marshall 2553 Silver Jubilee with a matching 2x12 mini cabinet. Krantz picked up the Marshall on eBay years ago, and the two have had a warm working relationship ever since. To continue learning about Krantz's live setup, visit: http://bit.ly/WayneKrantzRR

Lambda Days 2015 - Jan Pustelnik - Performance implications of various programming styles

21:52
In this talk we do some micro-benchmarking of various functional and procedural constructs in languages like Scala, Haskell, F#, D and C++. We analyze the impact of diverse programming styles, all in the functional genre, varying from pragmatic ""hidden mutation"" to highly monadic. We try to infer the overhead of particular constructs in a single programming language as well the alignment of those constructs with a given language. We also research the impact of constructs being used on the compilation time, which, in case of some languages, can become unacceptable. The examples range from elementary like quicksort and heapsort to more complex like dictionaries and trees. Also, some common idioms like error handling and IO are being analysed. On a side-note we also ask a deeper question - what is and what isn't functional programming and how its definition relates to the performance and correctness of programs.

2018 / 2019 BMW X2 Review and Comparison

29:58
BMW's latest CUV is the result of a formula we've seen before: take a practical crossover (the X1) and re-work it to be heavier on style and lighter on practicality while simultaneously enlarging its price tag. This math is what brought us the X6 and X4, but unlike those crossovers which I'm not the biggest fan of, the X2 seems to have used the same basic formula to create a vehicle that I'd buy over it's more pragmatic twin. Monad Transformer State - Michael Snoyman

33:46
Everything you didn’t want to know about monad transformer state was a presentation given as part of Lambda World 2017 by Michael Snoyman. Follow: -https://www.twitter.com/47deg -https://www.twitter.com/lambda_world -http://twitter.com/snoyberg Visit: -https://www.47deg.com/events for more details ___ Monad transformers are often used in Haskell applications to model state, capture results, and deal with explicit exceptions. In order to make these monad transformer stacks work with concurrency primitives, runtime exceptions, and more, we'll often use libraries like lifted-base, lifted-async, monad-control, and exceptions. But contrary to the expectations of many, surprising things can happen with the implicit state of our transformers. This talk will explain the problem, demonstrate where surprising behavior pops up, and recommend ways to structure your libraries and applications to sidestep the issue entirely.
