Regular Expressions (Regex) Tutorial: How to Match Any Pattern of Text

37:55
In this regular expressions (regex) tutorial, we're going to be learning how to match patterns of text. Regular expressions are extremely useful for matching common patterns of text such as email addresses, phone numbers, URLs, etc. Almost every programming language has a regular expression library, so learning regular expressions with not only help you with finding patterns in your text editors, but also you'll be able to use these programming libraries to search for patterns programmatically as well. Let's get started... How to Tune Oracle SQL - Lesson 4 - Understanding The Bind Step

07:50
Learn how to tune Oracle Database SQL! In this lesson you will learn that before SQL can be executed it must be parsed and part of the parse process is "bind". Learn what bind variables are, how variables impact SQL, why they are so important, when to use them and when not to use them. Writing SQL that performs well means understanding what Oracle is doing to the SQL: how it is executing the code, and why it is executing it that way. Then make changes needed to let Oracle run the code in a more efficient manner.

How an intense and diverse SQL statement workload can cause Oracle parsing problems

09:19
Make your library cache angry! This video is about how an intense and diverse SQL statement workload can cause Oracle parsing problems. There are many reasons for Oracle parsing related performance issues and many ways to identify them. So, I am narrowing the scope by focusing on one possible cause, that is, an intense and diverse SQL statement workload. I will use Oracle's wait interface to identify the root cause. Sound dry and boring? To make this a little more interesting and a whole lot more fun, I'm going to approach this from a non-traditional, almost backward perspective. After explaining some of the Oracle internals, I'm going to create a parsing intensive workload and then watch what happens... in real time. The educational impact is so powerful, I recorded a video This is video is part of Craig's blog post: http://blog.orapub.com/20170126/how-an-intense-and-diverse-sql-workload-causes-oracle-parsing-problems.html For more information go to www.orapub.com

"How types can turn a SQL interpreter into a SQL compiler" by Tiark Rompf

40:32
Commercial and open source database systems consist of millions of lines of highly optimized C code. Yet, their performance on individual queries falls 10x or 100x short of what a hand-written, specialized, implementation of the same query can achieve. In a recent joint project at Oracle Labs and the DATA Lab at EPFL, we have set out to implement a database query engine in Scala. With just about 3000 lines of Scala code, our prototype supports the full TPCH benchmark suite and runs queries several times as fast as highly-tuned commercial systems (> 10x peak speedup). This talk will focus on the key design principle that sets the system apart from other DB engines: where other systems interpret query plans, operator by operator, we generate and compile low-level C code for whole queries using the LMS (Lightweight Modular Staging) framework. In particular, the talk will discuss powerful generative programming patterns such as mixed-stage data structures that contains both static and dynamic parts (e.g. static schema and dynamic values for data records) and staged interpreters which can be mechanically turned into compilers (e.g. for SQL queries or regular expressions). These generative programming techniques provide a high degree of abstraction without performance penalty, and make Scala and LMS a more productive alternative to C for systems-level programming where the last drop of performance matters. by Tiark Rompf (@tiarkrompf) - Oracle Labs Tiark Rompf is a researcher at Oracle Labs. His work focuses on runtime code generation, advanced compiler technology, and associated language support. From 2008 to 2014 he was a member of Martin Odersky's Scala team at EPFL where he developed the LMS compiler framework and made various contributions to the Scala language and toolchain (delimited continuations, efficient immutable data structures, compiler speedups, type system work). He is a regular speaker at conferences.

Code Inspection with the javac

01:50:51
As covered last year, the javac, the standard Java compiler, is not only a Java compiler but can also be used as a great library for Java source code modeling. This tutorial dives deeper into this topic, showing—on the code level—how to use the javac to build tools that analyze Java code. Such tools may compute code metrics, verify code sanity, or check for common antipatterns. The session discusses the overall javac structure; how it works; and its APIs, including JSR 269 APIs. Then it demonstrates how to invoke the javac as a library, how to access its abstract syntax tree, and how to work with it. Copyright © 2013 Oracle and/or its affiliates.
