Working with the Trace File Analyzer Collector

28:22
The Trace File Analyzer (TFA) Collector Tool is a utility for collecting first failure diagnostics when creating Service Requests with Oracle Support. Using TFA Collector to make diagnostic collections removes questions about what files to collect and upload. TFA knows about all the well known Oracle and operating system diagnostic locations and collects only files that have been modified proximate to problem time specified from any of those well known locations. Larger files are also pruned proximate to problem time specified to reduce the size of the upload. If the system is a clustered environment TFA collects relevant diagnostics from the remote nodes as well. All of this can be accomplished with one simple command. Key features of TFA Collector include: RAC and single instance non-RAC support Time-based collection of relevant files OS Clusterware ASM DB OSW and CHMOS etc Large file pruning Cluster-wide time-relevant collections Analytics for key files DB alert logs Clusterware alert logs ASM alert logs system messages OSWatcher top and slabinfo data Flexible command-line interface Copyright © 2014 Oracle and/or its affiliates. 6. Always log error (and backtrace) before re-raising the exception.

02:28
When you re-raise an exception, you will reset the backtrace (the track back to the line on which the error was raised) and might change the error code (if you raise a different exception to propagate the exception "upwards"). So it is extremely important to call you error logging subprogram (see previous Good to Know) before you re-raise an exception. In-Depth with Trace File Analyzer 18.2

36:20
Held on July 24 2018 Gareth Chapman and Bill Burton talks in depth about how Oracle Trace File Analyzer works. Here's a quick guide to the highlights: 01:46 What is Oracle's goal in developing TFA 04:02 As TFA is included in the GI & DB Homes, does it get upgraded as part of RUs? 05:52 Can I still upgrade to the latest version of TFA without applying a RU? 07:46 Is there any difference between the MOS version of TFA and the one included in the RUs? 10:02 What will happen if I apply a RU which has an older version? 11:52 What's the difference between a root install and non-root? 14:59 How do I get notified of new issues TFA detects? 17:29 Can TFA automatically upload to MOS? 18:50 Where will collections be stored? 19:57 Does TFA make sure there is space to store the collection? 22:22 How can I make a targeted collection? 25:17 What else can TFA do apart from taking collections? Oracle X$TRACE, Wait Event Internals and Background Process Communication

01:48:41
In this session we will look into some internals of Oracle background process communication and also some special types of wait events that most people aren’t aware of. We will use some exotic tracing for internals research and fun and some of this stuff is actually useful in real life too! I’m not going to reveal everything upfront, as this is a secret internals hacking session after all ;-) We will use various techniques to research what the “reliable message” wait event is about and how reliable background process communication is orchestrated in Oracle. This is a hacking session, not formal structured training, so I’ll just do free form demos and talk (probably no slides, just hacking stuff on the command line). Also, check out my full-week Advanced Oracle Troubleshooting online training at https://blog.tanelpoder.com/seminar

Oracle 11G on RHEL 6.5 Setting Archive Log Mode for the Database

09:06
Verify the database log mode. The log mode is No Archive Mode. Note that Archive destination is USE_DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST. You can determine the path by looking at the parameter RECOVERY_FILE_DEST. By default, archive logs will be written to the flash recovery area. If you do not want to write archive logs to the flash recovery area you can set the parameter LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n to the location in which you wish to write archive logs. SQL trace is an awesome performance tuning resource. Top Nine Coding Guidelines for Oracle PL/SQL

08:00
My take, as of November 2015, of some of the most helpful guidelines to follow when writing PL/SQL code: 1. MAXSQL - maximize use of SQL first and foremost 2. SPOD - single point of definition 3. TRACE - production-available application-level tracing 4. LOG - consistent, encapsulated error logging 5. BULK - avoid row by row 6. OBVIOUS - make your code tell its own story, comment when it can't 7. NESTPROG - use nested subprograms 8. DECLARE - use declarative features of language 9. WARN - use compile-time warnings Accompanying blog post: http://stevenfeuersteinonplsql.blogspot.com/2015/10/your-ideas-for-more-important-plsql.html ======================================== Practically Perfect PL/SQL with Steven Feuerstein Copyright © 2015 Oracle and/or its affiliates.
