Getting Started with PL/SQL Table Functions: Pipelined Table Functions

14:49
Pipelined table functions are table functions in which rows are returned or "piped" back to the calling query before the function has completed, avoiding the blocking behavior of normal PL/SQL functions and reduce PGA consumption. This video is part of the Oracle Dev Gym class "Getting Started with Table Functions". You can watch it independent of the class, but then you miss out on the tutorials and quizzes! So visit https://devgym.oracle.com/pls/apex/dg/class/getting-started-with-pl-sql-table-functions.html and register for the class! ======================================== Practically Perfect PL/SQL with Steven Feuerstein Copyright © 2018 Oracle and/or its affiliates. Thinking in Parallel

01:02:25
The Java 8 Streams library makes it easy to run code in parallel. A common error is code that works when run sequentially but that misbehaves when run in parallel. This is often caused by programmers who are stuck in a mode of imperative, left-to-right thinking. This leads to an iterative style in which data is mutated and where the next result depends on the result of the previous computation, creating barriers to parallel computation. This presentation covers an alternative programming technique called array programming, where operations are applied on data aggregates instead of individual elements. It also includes examples and demonstrations that illustrate these techniques and how they lead to easier-to-understand, parallel-ready code.

Use NOCOPY to Improve Performance

05:15
The NOCOPY parameter hint tells the PL/SQL compiler to pass OUT and IN-OUT parameters "by reference" (meaning: do not copy in, nor copy out). The result is better performance and reduced PGA consumption. ====================================== Practically Perfect PL/SQL with Steven Feuerstein Copyright © 2015 Oracle and/or its affiliates. Oracle Tuning Tutorial - Long Full Table Scans Part 5 of 5

02:44
See all 5 tutorials, free, at SkillBuilders.com/OracleTuningFullTableScans. In summary, serial full table scans were always indirect before 11.2, parallel scans always direct before 11.2. These are the two critical parameters. That hidden parameter _serial_direct_read, remember, defaults to auto so your application may start behaving very differently as you upgrade from 11.2.01 or 11.2.02. Parallel_degree_policy, that defaults to manual. But again, it becomes an option when you go to 11.2 to enable the automatic facility which allows not only automatic tuning to the degree of parallelism but also enables the ability to make indirect reads when doing a full table scan.

Analysing Parallel Execution Skew - Using Diagnostics / Tuning Pack license

In this final part of the tutorial I show how to analyse Parallel Execution Skew if you happen to have a Diagnostics / Tuning Pack license. Having such a license can be very helpful for doing such an analysis, however the tools provided by Oracle still do have some shortcomings and bugs. These are demonstrated and finally I show how to perform such an analysis using my XPLAN_ASH utility that offers functionality not available out of the box from Oracle. It's advisable to watch the previous parts first: Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YKDns1EyTw Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BAiW6AwhfQ Part 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPzUr9ofQwE If you're interested in reproducing the SQLs analysed here, you can find the scripts as part of the following blog post: http://oracle-randolf.blogspot.de/2014/04/analysing-parallel-execution-skew-data.html

Turning Relational Database Tables into Spark Datasources

55:43
https://developer.oracle.com/code/online | Kuassi Mensah: This session presents a Spark data source for joining big data with master data in an RDBMS. It describes how such an implementation: Allows parallel and direct access to the RDBMS database (with the option of controlling the number of concurrent connections). Introspects the RDBMS table, generates partitions of Spark JDBCRDDs based on the split pattern, and rewrites Spark SQL queries into the RDBMS SQL dialect. Uses hooks in the JDBC driver for faster type conversions. Pushes down predicates to the RDBMS, prunes partitions based on the where clause, and projects columns to the RDBMS to reduce the amount of data returned and processed on Spark. Writes back the result set to the RDBMS table for use by traditional BI tools
