Do you need a Java SE license from Oracle?

03:26
Palisade Compliance has created a matrix with 5 questions that will help you determine whether you need a Java SE license from Oracle. Changes to Oracle’s Java roadmap, product release schedule, and support policies have created confusion and worry for companies that rely on Java. Oracle is monetizing Java, but in certain circumstances Java is still “free”, but that window is closing. Go to our web page to download the matrix: https://palisadecompliance.com/java-licensing-matrix/

Programming with Lambda Expressions in Java

58:51
Now that Java is supporting lambda expressions, it’s time to hone our skills to make use of them. Lambda expressions can help create concise code, but it takes more than learning the syntax to put them to good use. In this session, you will learn the idiomatic use of lambda expressions, explore the ways you can use them to do common tasks, and look into libraries and APIs that make use of them in Java. Best Way to Get Java Certified

03:12
What is the best way to get Java certified? Go to the Oracle education site. I want to get Java certified, not Oracle certified. Oracle created Java, too. The education.oracle.com website has information on how to get Java SE7 certified. It does not mean they have the type of training I want or the training I need, though I can understand if they have the certification courses. They have certification exams. Even diploma mills usually require you to submit something. Oracle offers exam prep seminars if you’ve studied by yourself but want their review course before paying to take the exam. What are the other options for taking training classes for Java? Oracle has live virtual class training for those who cannot get to an in-person class at various locations and downloadable training as well. What type of classes do they have? The Oracle courses range from the Oracle database administration classes to Sun Microsystems to Java programming language. Sun Microsystems are described as perfect cars that run on only 2% of the roads, whereas Microsoft cars go everywhere but crash every hour. That’s why Unix became so popular. Java application development is one of the most popular courses they teach, so you can create Java applications that work on their Oracle servers and interface with Sun. That means the Java is just middleware. It is actually called the Oracle Java and Middleware certification. That does not have much respect – or clarity of what it does. It shows that you can design applications that link their application servers, databases and business intelligence tools like JD Edwards. I just need Java skills and certification to prove I have the Java skills. If you’re just looking at Java certification, take the Java SE6 or SE7 exam after taking one of the classes, reading the books and taking a review seminar or really, really reading a lot about it. What levels do they have? The basic level is the associate level certification, which has three options. For that, you take the Java SE whatever the current version is fundamentals exam. Which means I’m not worth enough to be paid for the skill-set. The professional level has three options. Professional level requires taking the programmer 2 exam. I like the idea of being able to say Java Oracle considers me a professional. The certified master has three levels. It requires being a certified professional already and then taking at least one of their advanced classes. That would be easy to do with all their online classes. The online courses do not count toward the requirements for becoming a certified Java master. It has to be training on demand, live virtual classes or an instructor led class. Why? Are they afraid the advanced people might break-in and change their course credit, if not in the room or live session with someone? Of course Java is afraid of getting attacked; they already get exploited once a year. That they take precautions with their professional certifications does not make me feel better. Neither does the price tag for their courses, but you’ll appreciate the pay raise Java certification should yield.

Var with Style: Local Variable Type Inference in Java

38:34
Stuart Marks, Consulting Member of Technical Staff, Oracle Java 10 introduced a feature called local variable type inference, which enables programmers to declare local variables by using “var” instead of an explicit type. This feature makes it possible to write code that is more concise and more readable. However, it’s also possible for this feature to be misused, obfuscating code instead of making it more readable. The Java team has published a set of style guidelines that help direct programmers toward uses of var that improve code quality and help them avoid uses that detract from code quality. This session presents an overview of the new var feature and describes these style rules. The presentation is liberally supplemented with code examples of good uses as well as misuses of var.

How to install Oracle Java Plugin (32bit) (Linux)

08:01
NOTE: 64bit linux distributions must install 32bit libraries to use 32bit programs on a 64bit systems, in ubuntu and debian systems this is the "ia32-libs" package from the package manager or ubuntu software center. ----------------------------- In this video HikariKnight shows us how to install the Oracle Java Plugin on Linux for use in web browsers (in this case 32bit browsers) but the installation is identical. We recommend using 32bit java even on 64bit systems, this is because the 32bit java is optimized for heavy graphical applications like runescape. (however you will need to apply the fix from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRhR3o7TFEw if you intend to use java7 in the browser and not the client)

CON8342 - Improving the Performance of Your Java Application: Getting Beyond the Basics

50:47
Most Java applications are used in performance-critical situations where a small gain in responsiveness or throughput can mean success or failure. Typical applications have some low-hanging fruit, and improving this can lead to significant performance gains. The challenge is finding where the next gains will come from. This session demonstrates how Oracle Performance Analyzer can help identify performance opportunities in the most aggressively optimized applications and how you can drill down into the data to isolate and fix performance bottlenecks. Speakers: Martin Itzkowitz, Senior Principal Software Engineer, Oracle Marty Itzkowitz received an A.B. degree from Columbia College and a Ph.D. in Chemistry and Physics from CalTech. Easiest Way to Learn Java Programming

03:03
What is the easiest way to learn Java programming? It won’t stop the updates of the updates of the Java updater. Since Java is constantly changing, I see learning Java programming as a good source of long term employment prospects. Especially given how Java Server Pages are a new standard for fast, mass internet connections, being implemented by Walmart.com and other sites. If you have JSP, you might as well put Java apps on the server side for everything else, too. I do not know whether or not to say that’s the spirit, but I know there is a good pay raise in it. You could go to the Stanford Engineering Everywhere site to get an introduction to engineering course. I cannot afford to take Java classes at the local junior college, much less Stanford. Stanford Engineering Everywhere, also called SEE, is free. It has lectures on Java in general, object oriented programming, Java objects and methods and some basic programs. I hope it is more than the standard Hello World program. More like generating graphics, rolling dice, creating bouncing ball images and so forth. If it is an introduction to computer science, there is probably a lot of content there not related to Java. So go to the MIT open courseware site and take the introduction to programming in Java. That’s specific to Java. I heard they had a lot of programming classes. They have general lessons on introductions to scientific programming to courses on animation and graphics, to general concepts of how to design a program. I suppose it is a little more complicated than program name, a few lines of code and an ending of the end. Udemy has a low free tutorial on the basics of Java. Udemy usually charges you for the good content. Go to the Netbeans.org site. They have a webpage under documents and support on free resources for learning Java. I’d hope so, since that is the user community homepage for Java outside of Stackoverflow dot com. It has links to the Java Development Kit or JDK and the Netbeans IDE, the integrated development environment, what you really need to have to code in Java on your computer. Because unlike JavaScript, you cannot just edit Java within the browser to learn about it. You can also go to the Oracle dot com site’s Java Programming Center. Why would I want to go to Oracle for Java help? Because Oracle developed Java. They have the basics like the Hello World program in Java and training resources. I know Oracle training classes cost a lot. And so do the Java classes through Oracle, but you can also get Java certification from Oracle university. If I had a crystal ball, I’d say that Oracle’s certification does not help me in the workplace, unless my prior job history says I swapped out hard-drives or asked if you’d like fries with that. You could always hit the library for Java by idiots, dummies and dingbats. There is no dingbats series of books. Not yet, but all the other dumbo titles have been taken.

Modular Development with JDK 9

48:32
Alex Buckley, Editor, JLS/JVMS, Oracle A modular development style benefits every Java developer, whether the application is one JAR or one hundred JARs. This session introduces the Java 9 module system that's been used to structure the JDK as dozens of reusable modules that strongly protect their internals. Then it explains how you can create modules to enforce the structure inherent in your application. It will prepare you for some of the pitfalls of modular development, notably the technical debt present in popular libraries that rely on JDK internals. Finally, the session looks at how tools are preparing for modules. Chapters to help you navigate the video content: Part 1: Programming in the Large (2:12) Java Base Module (5:40) Encapsulation in JDK 9 (6:30) Running a Modular application (13:56) Maven and JDK 9 (16:05) Part 2: Migrating to Modules (24:56) Automatic Modules (32:19) Key points to remember about the Migration to Modules (34:08) Part 3: Modular JDK (34:30) Compatibility with the Modular JDK (37:15) Modular JDK Summary (39:37) https://blogs.oracle.com/java/modular-development
