SQL Tutorial 8: Using GROUP BY and aggregate functions

09:38
On some situations, you don’t need to list all the details in your table to present the information inside your database. Some people with executive positions rely mostly in the summary that you present to them. This is where you use GROUP BY in your SELECT statement. GROUP BY works closely with aggregate functions. Use aggregate functions whenever you summarize the details inside your tables. Examples of aggregate functions are SUM (), AVG (), MAX (), MIN (), COUNT. Assign alias name to column on where you used aggregate function. Still, you can work with aggregate functions even without a GROUP BY indicated. This case is mostly applicable when you generate summary with one result. GROUP BY syntax (together with other SELECT statement clauses) is applicable to all database products such as Informix, MySQL, MS SQL Server, Oracle, with addition with DB2. Link for the ebook will be announced later.

Difference between where and having in sql server

06:36
sql server where vs having sql server group by where having group by having sql server In this vide we will discuss the difference between where and having caluses in sql server. Let us understand the difference with an example. To calculate total sales by product, we would write a GROUP BY query as shown below SELECT Product, SUM(SaleAmount) AS TotalSales FROM Sales GROUP BY Product Now if we want to find only those products where the total sales amount is greater than $1000, we will use HAVING clause to filter products SELECT Product, SUM(SaleAmount) AS TotalSales FROM Sales GROUP BY Product HAVING SUM(SaleAmount) ] 1000 If we use WHERE clause instead of HAVING clause, we will get a syntax error. This is because the WHERE clause doesn’t work with aggregate functions like sum, min, max, avg, etc. SELECT Product, SUM(SaleAmount) AS TotalSales FROM Sales GROUP BY Product WHERE SUM(SaleAmount) ] 1000 So in short, the difference is WHERE clause cannot be used with aggregates where as HAVING can. However, there are other differences as well that we need to keep in mind when using WHERE and HAVING clauses. WHERE clause filters rows before aggregate calculations are performed where as HAVING clause filters rows after aggregate calculations are performed. Let us understand this with an example. Total sales of iPhone and Speakers can be calculated by using either WHERE or HAVING clause Calculate Total sales of iPhone and Speakers using WHERE clause : In this example the WHERE clause retrieves only iPhone and Speaker products and then performs the sum. SELECT Product, SUM(SaleAmount) AS TotalSales FROM Sales WHERE Product in ('iPhone', 'Speakers') GROUP BY Product Calculate Total sales of iPhone and Speakers using HAVING clause : This example retrieves all rows from Sales table, performs the sum and then removes all products except iPhone and Speakers. SELECT Product, SUM(SaleAmount) AS TotalSales FROM Sales GROUP BY Product HAVING Product in ('iPhone', 'Speakers') So from a performance standpoint, HAVING is slower than WHERE and should be avoided when possible. Another difference is WHERE comes before GROUP BY and HAVING comes after GROUP BY. Difference between WHERE and Having 1. WHERE clause cannot be used with aggregates where as HAVING can. This means WHERE clause is used for filtering individual rows where as HAVING clause is used to filter groups. 2. WHERE comes before GROUP BY. This means WHERE clause filters rows before aggregate calculations are performed. HAVING comes after GROUP BY. This means HAVING clause filters rows after aggregate calculations are performed. So from a performance standpoint, HAVING is slower than WHERE and should be avoided when possible. 3. WHERE and HAVING can be used together in a SELECT query. In this case WHERE clause is applied first to filter individual rows. The rows are then grouped and aggregate calculations are performed, and then the HAVING clause filters the groups. There are several ways of finding the nth highest salary. By the end of this video, we will be able to answer all the following questions as well. How to find nth highest salary in SQL Server using a Sub-Query How to find nth highest salary in SQL Server using a CTE How to find the 2nd, 3rd or 15th highest salary Let's use the following Employees table for this demo Use the following script to create Employees table Create table Employees ( ID int primary key identity, FirstName nvarchar(50), LastName nvarchar(50), Gender nvarchar(50), Salary int ) GO Insert into Employees values ('Ben', 'Hoskins', 'Male', 70000) Insert into Employees values ('Mark', 'Hastings', 'Male', 60000) Insert into Employees values ('Steve', 'Pound', 'Male', 45000) Insert into Employees values ('Ben', 'Hoskins', 'Male', 70000) Insert into Employees values ('Philip', 'Hastings', 'Male', 45000) Insert into Employees values ('Mary', 'Lambeth', 'Female', 30000) Insert into Employees values ('Valarie', 'Vikings', 'Female', 35000) Insert into Employees values ('John', 'Stanmore', 'Male', 80000) GO To find the highest salary it is straight forward. We can simply use the Max() function as shown below. Select Max(Salary) from Employees To get the second highest salary use a sub query along with Max() function as shown below. Select Max(Salary) from Employees where Salary [ (Select Max(Salary) from Employees) To find nth highest salary using Sub-Query SELECT TOP 1 SALARY FROM ( SELECT DISTINCT TOP N SALARY FROM EMPLOYEES ORDER BY SALARY DESC ) RESULT ORDER BY SALARY To find nth highest salary using CTE WITH RESULT AS ( SELECT SALARY, DENSE_RANK() OVER (ORDER BY SALARY DESC) AS DENSERANK FROM EMPLOYEES ) SELECT TOP 1 SALARY FROM RESULT WHERE DENSERANK = N To find 2nd highest salary we can use any of the above queries. Simple replace N with 2. Similarly, to find 3rd highest salary, simple replace N with 3. Please Note: On many of the websites, you may have seen that, the following query can be used to get the nth highest salary. The below query will only work if there are no duplicates. WITH RESULT AS ( SELECT SALARY, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY SALARY DESC) AS ROWNUMBER FROM EMPLOYEES ) SELECT SALARY FROM RESULT WHERE ROWNUMBER = 3

Reporting aggregted data using group function in bangla Part-8||oracle taught

55:35
SQL has numerous predefined aggregate functions that can be used to write queries to produce exactly this kind of information. The GROUP BY clause specifies how to group rows from a data table when aggregating information, while the HAVING clause filters out rows that do not belong in specified groups. Aggregate functions perform a variety of actions such as counting all the rows in a table, averaging a column's data, and summing numeric data. Aggregates can also search a table to find the highest "MAX" or lowest "MIN" values in a column. As with other types of queries, you can restrict, or filter out the rows these functions act on with the WHERE clause. For example, if a manager needs to know how many employees work in an organization, the aggregate function named COUNT(*) can be used to produce this information. The COUNT(*) function shown in the below SELECT statement counts all rows in a table.

SQL Tutorial 9: HAVING and DISTINCT clause

08:33
HAVING clause is used to filter rows generated with a GROUP BY statement. It is an equivalent of WHERE. WHERE filters each row of the result generated; HAVING filters each row of the generated result. HAVING clause may include compound filter conditions just like on WHERE clause. You may only use HAVING clause if you have a GROUP BY in your SELECT statement. The video shows the on how an aggregate function COUNT is used in the example. Function YEAR() is also used as part of the HAVING filter condition. Examples show on how to group columns using GROUP BY with an aggregate function to generate the desired result. DISTINCT eliminates occurrence of same set of rows. On some occasions, you may use DISTINCT as a replacement for the GROUP BY clause. One example shows on how to use SELECT statement with a WHERE, ORDER BY, GROUP BY, HAVING clauses. As you become familiar with the syntax, it may offer a time-saving approach to generate the result you need. HAVING, WHERE, DISTINCT, COUNT, MAX and other aggregate functions are standard in all SQL DBMS products. It has the same syntax as you work with Informix, Oracle, MS SQL Server, MySQL, in addition to DB2. Link for the ebook will be announced later.

SQL Tutorial - Window Functions

12:41
Another fantastic SQL Tutorial brought to you by BeardedDev. In this video we begin to explore Window Functions and their purpose within SQL Server. Window Functions are used for performing data analysis calculations and address an important need compared to the GROUP BY clause that we are able to return the underlying data in the same query. This video shows an example of the differences between the GROUP BY clause and Window Functions. Window Functions were first introduced in SQL Server 2005 but further enhancements and support was added in SQL Server 2012. We look at the OVER clause and PARTITION BY. Window Functions can only be included within SELECT or ORDER BY clauses. Functions Available: Aggregate - COUNT, SUM, MIN, MAX, AVG Offset - FIRST_VALUE, LAST_VALUE, LEAD, LAG Statistical - PERCENT_RANK, CUME_DIST, PERCENTILE_CONT, PERCENTILE_DIST Windows Functions also have FRAMES ROWS RANGE Window Functions are a powerful tool within SQL Server and I am excited to bring more videos and tutorials working with Window Functions in the future. Code: WITH CTE AS ( SELECT Sales_Id , SUM(Line_Total) AS Total FROM Sales_Details GROUP BY Sales_Id ) SELECT * FROM CTE AS A INNER JOIN Sales_Details AS B ON A.Sales_Id = B.Sales_Id SELECT Sales_Id , Sales_Date , Item , Price , Quantity , Line_Total , COUNT(Line_Total) OVER(PARTITION BY Sales_Id) AS Line_Count , SUM(Line_Total) OVER(PARTITION BY Sales_Id) AS Sales_Total , SUM(Line_Total) OVER(PARTITION BY Sales_Date) AS Daily_Total , SUM(Line_Total) OVER() AS Total FROM Sales_Details ORDER BY Sales_Total
