How to change Basic English into Business English

05:46
http://www.engvid.com/ Want to get that job? Improve your image? Sound more professional? Learn how to transform simple English words to business English vocabulary and watch your career take off! I'll show you how to change "get" to "receive", " make sure" to "ensure", "give more information" to "elaborate", and more. These small vocabulary changes will make a huge difference in your English level. Test yourself on this lesson at http://www.engvid.com/how-to-change-basic-english-into-business-english/ TRANSCRIPT: Hi. My name is Rebecca from www.engvid.com. Today, you're going to learn how to speak more professionally in business situations. Now, at times, it's all right to use informal language. It's acceptable in everyday situations. But there are times when you'll want to create a more powerful impression. And at that time, you'll want to be able to use business English. What's the difference between general English and business English? Well, sometimes, there's not very much difference. Sometimes, general English is used in business contexts. But sometimes, you use a higher-level word. And that's what I'm going to teach you in this lesson. Let's look at some really easy, common examples. For example, if you say -- or if you want to say, "I got your email", in regular English, you might just say, "I got your email." What would you say if you want to make it business English? You would say -- I'm giving you a clue. The word starts with R. Instead of saying, "I got your email"; "I received your email." Okay? Now, it becomes more formal and more business-like. Suppose you want to tell someone, "I need your help" or, "I need some help." What word could you use that starts with R instead of "need"? "Require." So instead of saying -- and you can also change more than the verb. The verb is the key, but you could say -- instead of saying, "I need some help", you could say, "I require some assistance." Now, you've changed two words, the verb and also a noun. Let's try another one. "Let's talk about it later." Which business word could you use? "Let's discuss -- let's discuss it later." That sounds much more professional than saying, "Let's talk about it later." Next one. "How do I get in touch with her?" What word could you use instead of that? "How do I contact her?" Okay? Good. "Please make sure you arrive on time." Which business word could you use instead of "make sure"? "Please ensure you arrive on time." "Please give her your travel plans." Instead of saying "give", you could say, "Please provide her with your itinerary." There, we've changed another word. Instead of saying "travel plan" or "travel plans", you could use the word "itinerary". An "itinerary" is usually a piece of paper or a document that lists your travel plans, when you're departing, when you're arriving, where, when, and so on. "Please let them know when you will be arriving." "Please let them know" -- instead of that, you could say, "Please inform them of your arrival." Okay? Good. "Please tell me why you've made this decision." "Please explain your decision." "Could you please talk some more about that subject?" "Could you please elaborate? Could you please elaborate on that." Now, this is actually a very useful word if you go to a conference or a meeting and you want someone to speak some more about a particular point or issue. It's a good, kind of, question to learn. "Could you please elaborate on that?" So "to elaborate" means to speak more or talk more, give more information. "How are you going to fix this problem?" Better than using the word "fix" is the word "solve". "How are you going to solve this problem?" All right? So try to do that for every simple word that you know and basic word that you know in general English, try to find a slightly more formal version, which will be your business English word. And use these words in an office environment. If you've found this helpful, please subscribe to my channel on YouTube. And if you'd like to do a quiz on this subject, you can also go to our website, www.engvid.com. Thanks very much. Good luck with your English.

Listening B2, Cambridge English First (FCE) Test - Part 1 (with Answer Keys & Transcript)

13:32
FCE examination, B2 level - Listening section - Part 1. TRANSCRIPTS Question 1. Jenny, hi, it’s me. I’m on the train and it’s stuck somewhere just outside the station - signalling problems or something ...Yes, I know, sorry, but there’s nothing I can do about it. Anyway, listen, could you check my diary and see when I'm supposed to be with those marketing people? ... It’s on my desk ... ... Oh, isn’t it? Oh, that’s strange. And it’s not in the drawer? I wonder... Oh, I know, I must have left it in Jimmie’s office after yesterday’s meeting. You couldn’t get it and then ring me back, could you? Sorry to be a nuisance. Thanks a lot. Question 2. Eggs are delicious food and parents have to make sure they are laid in spots well hidden from hungry thieves. One such careful parent braves the rushing waters of the Iguagu waterfalls in South America to lay its eggs in a damp crack in the rock face behind the falling water. Accidents are frequent, but evidently the risk is considered worthwhile. In any case, there are no eggs on the menu in this particular part of South America, which is bad news for some! Question 3. - There’s something wrong with my watch. It's running slow. - Oh, a Lexor. It's a common problem with the older Lexor watches. The latest ones are much better! - That’s no help to me. - No, I suppose not. Anyway, it’s not easy to get them fixed, either. Not many people are up to it. - Right. So ,..? - And the problem is that by the time you’ve got it to pieces and put in the new parts and reassembled it, you might as well have replaced it. It’s always the same, and it’s just as likely to go wrong again in a couple of months. Question 4. I must say, it surprised me when I saw how many there were in the family. I don’t see how they’re all going to fit in that small house. And they're obviously quite well-off - you should have seen the amounts of electronic equipment that was carried in, and they’ve got three large cars between them - so why would a wealthy family like that want to live here? It makes you wonder how they earn their living. Not that I’ve got anything to complain about - they’ve been perfectly pleasant whenever I’ve spoken to any of them, though so far they haven’t found time to come in for a coffee. Question 5. I love deep-sea diving. I go at least once every summer. The deeper you go, the quieter everything becomes, until finally all you can hear is the sound of your own heartbeat. It's my way of getting away from it all, finding some peace for once. I spent my honeymoon diving, although my wife’s not so keen, and it’s not something we always do together. I don't need company necessarily, and I’m not looking for some incredible adventure. I did, however, once join some guys in a cage off Florida, searching for the great white shark. If sharks stop moving, they die. That sounds like me back home! Question 6. Interviewer: It’s difficult to talk about the beauty of a sound, but our great musicians today still clearly feel that these sixteenth-century Italian violins are the best. Do you agree with them? Scientist: Well, if you look closely at a violin, um ... it may be a beautiful-looking instrument, but it is basically just a wooden box, whose function is to take a little energy out of the string that the musician plays and to turn it into sound that is then heard by the listener. The function of an individual violin is to provide suitable playing and sound qualities for the musician to express all of his or her emotions. Question 7. If, like me, you’re about to set off for Australia and you haven't yet bought a guidebook, how about trying a CD-ROM instead? Be careful though, the majority of interactive CDs turn out to be a let-down. Many publishers convert printed material to digital format, add a few flashy linkages and expect the buying public to be impressed. I wasn’t. In this context, Wilson’s multimedia package is a refreshing contrast. It’s got all the information, readily accessed from a single¬page pictorial index covering states, cities, wildlife, famous people, etc., and the data is accompanied by good still pictures and ninety-two video clips. Question 8. If you have to deal with a customer who keeps ringing your office about a problem you think you’ve already dealt with, it’s important to be forceful. Make them understand that you really sympathise with their problem, but decide on a course of action early in the conversation and try to keep it moving quickly to avoid any difficult areas. If you can, it might be worth your while trying to discover if there is another reason for their persistence, to try to do something about it before they call again. ======= CORRECT ANSWERS 1A - 2A - 3B - 4C - 5B - 6A - 7A - 8C

08 common Interview question and answers - Job Interview Skills

12:25
08 common Interview question and answers - Job Interview Skills 1. "Tell me a little about yourself." You should take this opportunity to show your communication skills by speaking clearly and concisely in an organized manner. Because there is no right or wrong answer for this question, it is important to appear friendly. 2. "What are your strengths?" This is a popular interview question. They want to know what you think of yourself. Although this is a general question, there is a wrong and right answer. The wrong answer is a generic answer saying you are organized and friendly. Although it will not hurt you during the interview, it will certainly not help you either. Answer this question based on the type of job you are applying for. 3. "What are your weaknesses?" For this answer, you should display a weakness that can be seen as a strength. There are many types of answers that will work. Some answers will be good answers for certain jobs, while the same answer will be a bad answer for a different job. Select an answer that will work for the position you are applying for. 4. "Where do you see yourself in five years?" This question primarily depends on where you are in your career. A person with 5 years of experience will have different goals than a person with no work experience. This question is asked to see how serious a candidate is about his or her career. Some people might not know their goals, and some people might have goals of becoming rich and retiring early. Those are incorrect answers for this question. The type of answer you want to give is an ambitious answer that shows you really love your career. A good interviewer will read between the lines and find out if a person is going to be a hard worker or just a mediocre one. Being descriptive and shooting for a big goal is something interviewers want to hear. 5. "What do you know about our company?" A typical job interview question, asked to find out how much company research you have conducted, is "What do you know about this company?" Prepare in advance, and in a word, research, so you can provide relevant and current information about your prospective employer to the interviewer. 6. "Are you good at dealing with change?" Dealing with change is common in the work place. A simple yes will not be sufficient to impress the interviewer. This is another type of question where everyone will have similar answers. Of course everyone is going to claim being excellent dealing with change. You got to communicate that you are really good at dealing with change. 7. "Do you work well under pressure?" In most cases, the best answer to this question is answering yes. Working well under pressure is a good trait to have. However, I think if you answer that you work the same with pressure and without pressure, the interviewer will be more impressed. However, you will need to explain in words why this is better. 8. "How do you make important decisions?" There are many ways to answer this question, and if you have a reasonable method of making decisions, it will probably be sufficient. One answer I thought of included not being afraid of asking your manager. You can follow up by saying even the best needs mentoring, and you always want to improve. So basically, this could work as an answer, but depending on the job, you might have a better shot with an answer like my example.

CAE Cambridge English Exam - All you need to know

17:24
Are you thinking of taking the CAE exam? I'll tell you everything you need to know about the exam to decide if it is for you. Did you know that many people can take the CAE instead of the IELTS? If you have decided to take the CAE, I'll give you details on all the different parts of this Cambridge exam, and also tell you about the 2015 changes. Here are some of the questions that I cover in this video: - What is the exam for? - Who takes the exam? - How hard is the test? - How long is the exam? - What are the different sections of the test? - What are the different test questions like? - How is the test changing? Did you understand the lesson? Take the quiz on it here: https://www.engvid.com/cambridge-english-exam/ TRANSCRIPT Hello, everyone. I'm Jade. What we're talking about today is the CAE test. This is a Cambridge exam, and it tests the advanced level of English. So, we're going to generally look at the parts of the test, and then in the next part of the video, we'll look at the test in more detail, so you'll know exactly what to expect if you're going to take this exam. So, who takes this test? This is a test that people choose to take because they want to go to university in an English-speaking country, or you want to do a course in English at a university. You might also be taking this because you need it as part of your visa requirements. Or you might be doing it because you just want to take the test. Not so many people do that, but I've met some. What's in the test? There are five parts at the moment; a reading part, a writing part, a listening part, a speaking part, and also this use of English, which is a vocabulary and grammar combined test that's seeing where you are with that. Importantly, though, in 2015, the reading test and the use of English will be together in one part. So, that means there'll just be four... There'll be four parts 2015 onwards. This... I should also say about this test that it's a Secure English Language Test. That means that you do it in a test center and you have to prove your identity. It's a formal test, and it's one of the reasons why this test is well-respected, and you can use it to enter university and things like that, because the results that you get are trusted. You can do this test on paper or computer; you have a choice. And it tests from... At the lower end, you could be intermediate, and the top end proficiency which is very, very, very, very high. So, that's a broad survey of what's in the test. Now we're going to look at the parts in more detail. So, we have... Let's start with the reading test. The reading test is one hour and 15 minutes. There are four parts. This will be 20% of your overall mark, and you'll be expected to read 3,000 words. What kinds of text will you be reading? Well, you'll be reading newspapers, fiction, non-fiction, and promotional copy. So it could be a variety of texts that you might just encounter in life in an English-speaking country. The skills that it's looking for is... It will be looking for your ability to read for gist, which is like the general meaning, but also detail. These are different reading skills. When you're reading for detail, you'll have to find a specific part of the text and read very closely for your answer, whereas gist relates to the general meaning. And when you're answering the questions, sometimes it will be multiple choice. So, you know, A), B), C), and sometimes you'll need to fill in a gap. So, you need to go back to the test... To the text, read closely, and find your answer so you can fill in the gap. It's also testing you on your ability to interpret tone in a text. So, perhaps not just the literal words written there on the page, but when we understand tone, we get an extra sense of what it really means. And also opinion, so you're reading something, and then you're making... When you're reading it for opinion, you get a sense of what is actually meant, and you'll need to express what is meant through opinion, through people's opinion. And you'll be expected to understand the main ideas of the text as well. When we come back, we're going to look at the other parts of the test in closer detail. Let's have a look at the writing part of the exam in closer detail-this is a magnifying glass-and the use of English part of the exam. So, the writing part of the test is two questions. It's going to be 20% of your overall mark. And it's one hour, 30 minutes. Now, what you need to do in the writing test is... Question one is compulsory, that means you have to answer it; you don't have a choice. In this question, first of all, you need to read an extract, so there'll be a short text, up to 150 words, that you need to read before you write your own answer.
Business English - How to talk about your career

11:10
http://www.engvid.com/ Have you just been recruited, promoted, or retrenched? I'll teach you 24 essential business English expressions to talk about your working life and career, from hiring to retiring, and everything in between. You'll learn key vocabulary for job interviews, resumes, and work performance, as well as the TOEFL, IELTS and TOEIC exams. Next, take a quiz on this lesson: http://www.engvid.com/business-english-how-to-talk-about-your-career/ TRANSCRIPT: Hi, my name is Rebecca from www.engvid.com. In today's lesson, you will learn about 24 different words to talk about your working life. You'll need these words if you want to be able to talk about your career or about someone else's professional life. So let's get started. I've divided the vocabulary into two parts. On this side, we'll see words which the applicant or the employee, the future employee is going to need; things that a person who is applying for a job or someone who works somewhere, these words apply to them. And the words on this side refer to things that the employer does, that the company does. Okay? So let's start with what a person does when he's looking... He or she is looking for a job. So the first thing is to "look for a job". That could mean that you look at classified ads, you go online; you look for a job. Another way to say that is: "to seek employment", that's a formal way to say it. "To seek" means to look for, and "employment" means work or a job. Next, you would probably "apply". After you see a position that interests you or a job that interests you, you would apply for that position, you would fill out perhaps an application form or send in a letter. And also "submit" which means to formally give in or send in, to submit your resume, to submit your CV. CV is curriculum vitae. In some places, they say: "CV", and in other places, they say: "resume". It's the same thing, but you need to apply and submit it. So these are the first three things that someone who's looking for a job or a job applicant is going to do. Let's jump on to this side now to see what the employer does, and then later, we'll come back to a couple of other things which the person can do. Okay? So what does the employer usually do? After they have gone through the applications, they will invite some people for an "interview" and they will interview that person. Next, they'll make a list which is... That process is called: "to shortlist". "To shortlist" means let's say that they interviewed 20 people and now they're going to choose about three people or five people, and from those five or three, they will choose one person finally because there's one position available. So when they take out of the 20, they make it three or five, that's called... That process is called shortlisting. They shortlist the candidates. So the first thing you can hope, after being interviewed, is that you will be shortlisted. And then, hopefully, you will also be chosen for the position. So if that happens, the company decides to "hire" someone or to "recruit" a new employee, to recruit someone. Both words are used. After that, if necessary, but not always, they may have to "train" that person to teach them how to do the job. At some later point in their career, it may be also necessary to "retrain" that person. "Re"-anything usually means to do something again. Next, after the person has been hired and perhaps trained, the person will be "placed" in a particular department, in a branch, in a division, in a particular location. They will placed there means they will be put in that position. Next, a variety of things can occur, can happen in the course of a person's career. A person could be "transferred". You see the arrow? Transfer means your position, the level of your position doesn't change necessarily, but you might be just moved. "To transfer" means to move to another branch, to another location, to another country, - right? - another department, another division. You are transferred. Another thing that can happen if you're doing very well is you might be "promoted". Here we see the arrow pointing up. So, "to promote" means to get a higher level position. Usually, but not always, that includes a higher salary as well. Then you may be... That's referred to as a "raise", but it doesn't always happen. Sometimes you get a higher position without the extra money.
