New York Girls Finbar Furey Lyrics

04:03
As I walked down through Chatham Street a fair maid I did meet, She asked me to see her home-- she lived in Bleecker Street. Chorus: To me a-weigh, you Santy, My dear Annie Oh, you New York girls, Can't you dance the polka? To me a-weigh, you Santy, My dear Annie Oh, you New York girls, Can't you dance the polka? And when we got to Bleecker Street, We stopped at forty-four, Her mother and her sister there, to meet her at the door. Chorus: To me a-weigh, you Santy, My dear Annie Oh, you New York girls, Can't you dance the polka? To me a-weigh, you Santy, My dear Annie Oh, you New York girls, Can't you dance the polka? And when I got inside the house, The drinks were passed around, The liquor was so awful strong, My head went round and round. Chorus: To me a-weigh, you Santy, My dear Annie Oh, you New York girls, Can't you dance the polka? To me a-weigh, you Santy, My dear Annie Oh, you New York girls, Can't you dance the polka? And then we had another drink, before we sat to eat, The liquor was so awful strong, I quickly fell asleep. Chorus: To me a-weigh, you Santy, My dear Annie Oh, you New York girls, Can't you dance the polka? To me a-weigh, you Santy, My dear Annie Oh, you New York girls, Can't you dance the polka? When I awoke next morning I had an aching head, There was I, Jack all alone, Stark naked in me bed. Chorus: To me a-weigh, you Santy, My dear Annie Oh, you New York girls, Can't you dance the polka? To me a-weigh, you Santy, My dear Annie Oh, you New York girls, Can't you dance the polka? Chorus: My gold watch and my pocketbook And lady friend were gone; And there was I, Jack all alone, Stark naked in the room. Chorus: To me a-weigh, you Santy, My dear Annie Oh, you New York girls, Can't you dance the polka? To me a-weigh, you Santy, My dear Annie Oh, you New York girls, Can't you dance the polka? On looking round this little room, There's nothing I could see, But a woman's shift and apron That were no use to me. Chorus: To me a-weigh, you Santy, My dear Annie Oh, you New York girls, Can't you dance the polka? To me a-weigh, you Santy, My dear Annie Oh, you New York girls, Can't you dance the polka? With a flour barrel for a suit of clothes, Down Cherry Street forlorn, There Martin Churchill took me in, And sent me 'round Cape Horn. Chorus: To me a-weigh, you Santy, My dear Annie Oh, you New York girls, Can't you dance the polka? To me a-weigh, you Santy, My honey , My dear Annie Oh, you New York girls, Can't you dance the polka?

"New York Girls" in Gangs of New York (2002)

04:40
In this scene from the 2002 film GANGS OF NEW YORK, Finbar Furey performs the song (also a sea chantey) "New York Girls" ("Can't Ye Dance the Polka?"). The song probably came about during the polka fad of the 1840s. The film, incidentally, is set in the early 1860s. The version sung appears to be drawn mainly from sea chantey collector William Doerflinger's book (1951). Other versions of "New York Gals" chantey can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRM_fOOg9WQ and here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEv-rXp6rnk

with lyrics. Ukulele and additional 'spoken' vocals by Peter Sellers. The song is also unusual in the sense that all the male band members (except Nigel Pegrum) take lead vocals on two verses each (Rick Kemp singing verses 1 and 5, Tim Hart 2 and 6, Peter Knight 3 and 7 and Bob Johnson 4 and 8), with Maddy Prior singing the chorus.

New York Girls

02:38
The original Kingston Trio of Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds, and Dave Guard perform their rousing version of a 19th century Irish-American music hall number about a hapless sailor who is ensnared in the wiles of a lady of the streets. The KT performs a somewhat sanitized reading of the original song, as arranged by the great folk singer and actor Burl Ives, who edited out some of the more explicit details of the encounter. This cut is from the Trio's second album "...from the Hungry i," which was released just prior to the breakout success of the single "Tom Dooley" from the group's first album. The song was included recently in the soundtrack of Martin Scorsese's film "Gangs of New York" as performed by Finbar Furey and has also been covered in versions available on YouTube by Oysterband, Steeleye Span, The Dusty Buskers, and The Chilly Winds. For an extended discussion of the song, including eight more versions of it, take a look at the blog associated with this YT channel here: http://compvid101.blogspot.com/2009/06/from-american-music-hall-new-york-girls.html

New York Girls - Highland Rogues

03:04
Hello All! It has been a long time since we uploaded but we are back with another great classic. Many groups have done covers of this song such as Gaelic Storm and it featured in the film Gangs of New York. We hope you all enjoy! Lyrics Below: As I walked down the Broadway One evening last July I met a maid who asked me trade And a sailor lad says I Away Santee My Dear Annie Oh, you New York girls can't you dance the polka? To Tiffany's I took her I didn't mind expense I bought her a pair of gold earrings And they cost me fifteen cents And she says, 'You Limejuice sailor Now see me home you may' But when we reached her cottage door She this to me did say Away Santee My Dear Annie Oh, you New York girls can't you dance the polka? My flash man he's a Yankee With his hair cut short behind He wears a pair of black sea-boots And he sails in the Blackball Line And He's homeward bound this evening And with me he will stay So get a move on, sailor-boy Get cracking on your way Away Santee My Dear Annie Oh, you New York girls can't you dance the polka? I kissed her hard and proper Afore her flash man came So fare thee well, you Bowery girl I know your little game And then I wrapped me glad rags round me And to the docks did steer I will never court another girl I'll stick to rum and beer I joined a Yankee blood-boat And sailed away next morn Don't mess around with women boys You're safer 'round Cape Horn Away Santee My Dear Annie Oh, you New York girls can't you dance the polka? Away Santee My Dear Annie Oh, you New York girls can't you dance the polka?
