Viewing US Nautical Charts on Google Earth

06:55
A slick way to do echart navigation on google earth, as well as viewing all NOAA charts and even a fast way to download the RNC versions. NOTE: WE UPDATED THE LINK BELOW JAN 16, 2018 (thanks to PorcineJim ) Main link at NOAA describing the process https://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/data/gis-data-and-services.html#seamless-raster-nautical-chart-services Direct link to the Google Earth file we need https://seamlessrnc.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/rnc/noaa_rncs.kmz ( Note this only works with US charts because they offer free echarts, whereas most other nations do not. Brazil may be an exception, but they do not offer the Google Earth function that i know of. )

How to Find Your Position on a Topo Map Using a GPS & UTM

08:06
** GET THE GEAR ON AMAZON** https://www.amazon.com/shop/jimcyr This quick video shows you how you can use your GPS to find your position on a Topo map using the UTM / NAD 83 format & datum. There is a LOT to learn about map reading which is useful when your GPS fails. Anybody with tips can post them as video replies or comments. When using your GPS in conjunction with a topo map, is to make sure that Datum is the same on the GPS as on your map. For example, out of the box GPS receivers are set to WGS84 while most topo maps are probably NAD83. This is important to set since it will make a different where you are on the map. The next setting to change is the position format. Depending on the age of the map, it will be using UTM number format instead of GPS friendly lat/log format. Position format is much like a phone number, you can write it in various ways, but they all mean the same thing. Now you can take a set of coordinates from the GPS, either grab a waypoint, look up a phototagged image. Here we want to get the position where we are and where we want to go, like a visitor centre. Write down the UTM coordinates on to a piece of paper. Take the corner of the piece of paper and mark out the scale, using UTM each tick on a grid is divisible by 10. So you can take each digit in a UTM and narrow down on the map by 100m in this example. #avoidingchores

Using IPad For Navigation

04:34
http://tulasendlesssummer.com for more endless summer fun, adventure, and travel. I was relatively recently looking for a gps for navigation and was between a Garmin and iPad. I have found for the same price or a tiny bit cheaper I could get an iPad WITH Navionics and I would have all the functionality of the iPad and not be limited to just the sole purpose of a GPS. However, there are a few things to take into consideration if you are looking at using your iPad as your navigation device ESPECIALLY as your sole navigation device. If you have a question about whether you can use your iPad out of range of cellphone towers check out this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxUCgC8AHu0 Ipad mini case - http://bit.ly/2bTxGKG Ipad mini cradle - http://bit.ly/2bE7Qdg Ram mount and support arm - http://bit.ly/2bKBcds

NORTHSEAKAYAK - Sea Kayak Navigation Course 2017

02:47
Although we spend a lot of time training on or in the water, we also make time to share some theoretical experience with the team. This time we’re talking about navigation and everything that comes with it. Again, we get to use the Bella Vista hall in the Westhoek Marina so a big thanks for the chairman Philippe! We started by giving an introduction, we spoke of the tides and how and why they occur and the influence it gives for us, sea kayakers. We prefer to start with basics, and slowly build up to the point that everyone can swiftly plot a course to steer, even with taking tidal streams in account. This video is in no way a training or instructional video, it’s just a way of showing how we do things in our NORTHSEAKAYAK team. Sea kayak navigation is very interesting, it’s great fun discovering the many small but important data a sea chart provides us. See you on the water!! Paddle safe!
