Gerry Mulligan - My Funny Valentine

05:02
Gerald Joseph "Gerry" Mulligan (April 6, 1927 – January 20, 1996) was an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, composer and arranger.[1] Though Mulligan is primarily known as one of the leading baritone saxophonists in jazz history – playing the instrument with a light and airy tone in the era of cool jazz – he was also a notable arranger, working with Claude Thornhill, Miles Davis, Stan Kenton, and others. Mulligan's pianoless quartet of the early 1950s with trumpeter Chet Baker is still regarded as one of the more important cool jazz groups. Mulligan was also a skilled pianist and played several other reed instruments. "There are some words that have been kind of lost from modern usage that I would like to bring to my music and have striven all my life to do, BEAUTY, GRACE, NOBILITY, these are the things that music can bring to us, as human beings. I think it is well that we who make music keep that in our consciousness." -GERRY MULLIGAN

My Funny Valentine - Chet Baker (Instrumental)

02:58
My Funny Valentine by Chet Baker "After a run as Charlie Parker’s trumpeter in the Quintet during the bebop giant’s stay in L.A., Baker joined the Gerry Mulligan Quartet – famous for its eschewing of the piano, entirely, as well as Mulligan and Baker’s simpatico styles. In 1952, the quartet cut four sides for the Fantasy label (high off the recent success of Dave Brubeck), recorded live at San Francisco’s Blackhawk club. Along with two Mulligan originals, bassist Carson Smith suggested a ballad called “My Funny Valentine,” which no one in the group had ever heard before. In James Gavin’s biography, Deep in a Dream: The Long Night of Chet Baker, the author discusses the song’s influence on the trumpeter. “The song fascinated Baker. It captured all he aspired to as a musician … ‘Valentine’ became his favorite song; rarely would he do a show without it, or fail to find something new in its thirty-five bars.” The instrumental version of the song clearly resonated with Baker (the quartet recorded it again for Pacific Jazz in 1953), but not long after the Quartet versions, he decided to do a vocal album and cut “My Funny Valentine” for Chet Baker Sings (1954)."

Tom Lowe - My Funny Valentine

03:39
"My Funny Valentine" is a show tune from the 1937 Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart musical Babes in Arms. Here it is performed by Tom Lowe, with Martyn Parkes on the piano, in Mellor Church on January 30th, 2016. The song is a popular jazz standard, appearing on over 1300 albums performed by over 600 artists, including Chet Baker, Bill Evans, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Andy Williams, Shirley Bassey, Miles Davis, Etta James, Nico, Chaka Khan, Elvis Costello, and Rickie Lee Jones. In 2015 it was announced that the Gerry Mulligan quartet featuring Chet Baker's version of the song will be inducted into the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry for the song's "cultural, artistic and/or historical significance to American society and the nation’s audio legacy".

My Funny Valentine on Tenor Sax - Tribute to Gerry Mulligan (Randy Sherwood)

04:41
Destin SaxMan Randy Sherwood performs "My Funny Valentine". It is a lovely song that has been recorded well over 500 times (commercially). Written in 1937 by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, Mitzi Green introduced My Funny Valentine in the Broadway musical, "Babes in Arms". Her character, Susie Ward, sang to Ray Heatherton whose character was (conveniently) named Valentine, Val White. The show opened at the Schubert Theater on April 14, 1937, and ran for 289 performances. My Funny Valentine subsequently went onto the recording charts in 1945, with Hal McIntyre and His Orchestra (Ruth Gaylor, vocal) taking it to number sixteen. Incidentally, "Babes in Arms" was the first true Rodgers and Hart musical. That is to say, this is the first time that they wrote the book (dialog) as well as the music and lyrics. Their storyline was the forerunner of the Hey kids, lets put on a show! formula, which provided a format for a sequence of song and dance numbers while allowing the inclusion of a thin plot and some modest character development. My Funny Valentine has at one time or another been a specialty number for countless performers, including Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Miles Davis, and Chet Baker. Although Chet Baker's vocal version is one of the best known renditions of this tune, Chets version with Gerry Mulligan, from 1952 is one of his first recording sessions and is a haunting version of the tune, no doubt helped along by the acoustics of the empty San Francisco Blackhawk nightclub. Bakers approach on this track is strangely reminiscent of Clifford Brown. I used a popular backing track for this recording, and I added my own string sections using my Yamaha keyboard. Also, I was experimenting with my movie editor (MAGIX V11) which at one point went kindof haywire on me. Once I added the effects, I couldn't get them "undone". Oh well - I do love this song and I wanted to try to make an "artsy" tribute to it since so many great artists have dedicated their time and talents to interpreting this wonderful melody. Hope you enjoy my interpretation and performance of this song - I certainly love playing it!!
