Part of this was scenes from a video that I decided not to do when the "THERAPY" episode aired, but I said what the heck and here is my commentary on that situation. I am not trying to take away from the real progress we have made...as a teenager I never thought I would see gay black men in love on a TV show. In later years I'd never expect that from Love and Hip Hop. Hip Hop as we know is an extremely homophobic industry and I did see "OUT IN HIP HOP" and thought it was dynamic. I enjoyed YouTuber Trini Trents scholarly thoughts on that. I am more-so irritated with these Mona Scott Young ghetto soap operas she puts together. Ensembles of dysfunction, the worst of the brown and black community. These storylines do exist in our community, but it seems she exploits it with fake storylines, rather than finding real ones and finding positive messages throughout. (I do appreciate the lil fizz single father storyline as black men are often portrayed as absent dads) Progress is a slow bumpy road, I mean, we have to start some where. And I guess this stereotypical black downlow gay man cliche works for now. Black women have been paranoid of their men being downlow since that Oprah special, Tyler Perry didn't help matters with his melodrama starring an HIV infected Janet Jackson. I know these instances do exist, but did anyone really think Miles was heterosexual? And does anyone really believe that Amber was born a woman? I'm just saying. I do not like Milan Christopher from what I can see from the show. He seems arrogant and domineering....Napolean Complex, he looks all of 4 foot eleven, working out as much as he can to appear bigger. I don't find either of them attractive anymore after watching a few episodes....but to each their own, there is a market for guys like them. Guys who hit the gym but have nothing mental going on. The homophobia of Miles's family and church upbringing resonated with me but what is he doing to help struggling gays other than that paid spot that came on after the episode? Mona Scott is brave for going ahead with this storyline however I must say, I do have my issues with these men not being multifaceted. I guess I see the pros and cons. As a graduate of film studies and TV production, I could produce a better show than this. I mean all of it is chock full of bad acting and belabored drama. I hope we can get to a point where one day, a gay couple is just a gay couple on television and not a statement. Not something surrounded in an intense plotline of stigma, betrayal and coming out. Seeing Miles and Milan was dynamic for me however I did not know how to approach it in a video, nor was I in the right mindset to make a video given my recent bout of depression. I do think this is progress like I said, but it does not mean I can't note some problems with its representation.
