Men Need To Talk About Their Sexual Abuse | Seth Shelley | TEDxUNBC

14:14
Pastor Seth Shelley takes us on an emotional and at times difficult journey about male sexual violence. He brings forward his own story of sexual assault to ask men to open up about their personal stories too. Recorded at TEDxUNBC in Prince George, BC. Seth speaks to an issue common around the world, sexual assault. However, it is men who also need to share their stories of abuse. Far too many men are silent about their own stories of trauma and eventual healing. It is our society's ideas around masculinity which prevent men from opening up, and steal their narratives from them. Only through sharing with friends and family do we reclaim our stories for ourselves. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx Graduating from Summit Pacific Bible College in 2012 with a BA in Religion, Seth has pastored in Western Canada for the past 5 years. Currently he is the Associate Pastor at Timbers Community Church in Prince George, BC where his role is to provide counselling services, preform weddings and funerals, organize events for the community and a variety of other things. Molested - Powerful Testimony By A Male Sexual Abuse Survivor!!

14:06
It took bravery and courage for this man to speak on his sexual abuse by family and the after effects. Has society put men on the back burner? Have we become so dismissive of a boy/man's pain? When are we going to address the reasons behind all the angry and over sexualized men? https://www.paypal.me/HassanCampbell

31:56
Back on Track: Men talking about childhood sexual assault follows the true stories of a number of participants from SECASA's annual weekend retreat for male survivors of sexual assault in Maldon, central Victoria. This weekend is facilitated by SECASA counsellors and Mike Lew, therapist and author of 'Victims No Longer, The Classic Guide for Men Recovering from Sexual Child Abuse'. 18 months in the making, this video was the brainchild of the male survivors featured in it. They created it in the hope that their stories would help other men on the path of healing.
Reimagining masculinity; my journey as a male sexual assault survivor | Landon Wilcock | TEDxQueensU

16:06
As a survivor of sexual assault, Landon came to view his life as one broken into many pieces. He offers a unique perspective on how we can move forward as a society in dealing with not just male survivors but all victims of sexual assault. Landon shares his story and explains the factors that prevented him from seeking help from anyone for months after the assault. Landon has had to learn how to view himself as a man, while rebuilding his own identity and masculinity. He details how breaking down his own identity from the ground up and finding his own version of manhood after a life changing experience has shaped who he is today. Landon has been actively involved in sexual assault prevention advocacy. Recently he has been working with the Sexual Assault Center Kingston and two thesis film students on a new project to bring greater awareness to services for victims and survivors. In addition, he acts as a Peer Facilitator for the Queen’s Bystander Intervention Program, which works to educate students and university employees on preventing and intervening in situations of sexual assault and violence. Landon Wilcock is a fourth year student in Political Studies at Queen’s University. This past summer, he began his ongoing work at the Centre for International and Defence Policy (CIDP), and has previously worked in the Wealth Management and Energy industries. Landon has been actively involved in numerous student associations at Queen’s University. He currently acts as the Chief Financial Officer for the not-for- profit organization Queen’s International Affairs Association, as well as serving as a Peer Facilitator for the Bystander Intervention Program, which works to educate students and university employees on preventing and intervening in situations of sexual assault and violence. In his free time, Landon enjoys writing, having contributed articles to both the Queen’s Observer and the Queen’s Journal. In his most recent article in the Journal, Landon detailed his own experience of sexual assault and post-trauma growth as a male survivor. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Male Sexual Abuse - Brian Brozovic’s Story | 1in6

06:40
"We have to feel. We have to. We have to break out beyond... the 'man box.'" Brian, a male survivor of sexual abuse, has committed himself to creating a family anchored in love and trust. He and his wife, Jennifer, are raising three children together. To be a voice in this movement, please like, subscribe, & share. For help, visit http://1in6.org/. Chat with a trained professional, 24/7, anonymous & free: http://1in6.org/helpline Join a weekly online support group, confidential & free - facilitated by a professional counselor: http://1in6.org/supportgroups View other male survivors's stories: 1in6.org/bristlecone To support our nonprofit's work, helping men who were sexually abused or assaulted: http://1in6.org/donate Like us on Facebook: http://facebook.com/1in6org Follow us on Twitter: http://twitter.com/1in6org Find us on Instagram: http://instagram.com/1in6org ----------------------------- What do you do when profound betrayal robs you of the family trust and love that you are born into? Brian Brozovic’s answer: You build yourself a new family. Brian was raised in a military family. Frequent moves made it difficult to establish long term friendships, so close family ties were crucial to the structure of his life. And then he lost it all. At around the age of eleven, Brian was sexually abused by a close family member. The foundation beneath him cracked. “The only thing I could do was pick up the pieces and try to find a way forward.” But it has not been easy. At fourteen he tried alcohol for the first time. “I had a lot of emotions that I didn’t want to process…It was a heck of a lot easier to keep them drowned in alcohol.” His alcoholism followed him into adulthood, and Brian realized that the long-buried abuse was the engine driving it. He sought help through Alcoholics Anonymous and counseling and a male survivor group. The men had different problems, but also common ground: “We all had a problem and we kind of kept it in and we finally had to realize that this was no longer healthy for us, or for those around us.” Brian has committed himself to re-creating a family anchored in love and trust. He and his wife, Jennifer, are raising three children together, and Brian marvels: “I was on a really bad path, and the idea that there’s really something better out there is something that I continue to find every day and I continue to grow on.” ----------------------------- 1in6 is a national nonprofit organization supporting the estimated 1 in 6 men who have experienced sexual abuse or assault. At 1in6, we believe that the tens of millions of male survivors who have had such experiences deserve to live whole, meaningful lives, but we know that isn’t always easy. Entrenched myths about masculinity, the stigma and silence around the issue, and a lack of male-specific services are just some of the barriers men face to seeking help and addressing emotional wounds in a healthy way. Men who feel unsafe to disclose and seek help may risk exposure to social dysfunction and mental and physical health issues, including but not limited to: depression, PTSD, suicidal ideation, addiction, isolation, fear of intimacy, confusion about sexuality, interpersonal violence, and feelings such as anger, guilt, shame, and distrust. We help men overcome the negative effects of past experiences and reclaim their lives by offering information, outreach, and free and anonymous services for men and their loved ones, as well as service providers working with men. He and his friends roamed freely. Then, when he was eight years old, a teenager found him alone. Pressured and coaxed to follow the teenager, Jeff found himself in a vacant cemetery where the teenager cornered him in a fenced-in family plot and sexually abused him. Like so many survivors, Jeff was silenced by it. The abuse he suffered remained a secret for over forty years. He never believed that it had any impact on him, but he saw himself reacting to life’s challenges with a level of despair that seemed out of synch. In college, Jeff studied, swam and ran his way out of his despair. Graduate school followed, and Jeff emerged with a doctorate in economics focused on forestry and the environment. Finally, in his 50’s, Jeff disclosed the abuse for the first time. He began working with a trauma therapist on what had happened to him decades earlier in the cemetery. After one session, he went to his office and Googled “male sexual abuse” and found the Bristlecone page. “I just looked at those faces and I spent the rest of my day crying in my office. I could see in those people, myself.” Jeff has continued his work, and now sees with greater clarity the timeline of his life, the connection between events, the links between who he is and what he experienced as a child. One day he walked out of his therapist’s office feeling a newfound self-awareness. He recalls, “It’s as if someone took a lid off my life and I could finally see the blue sky and brilliant sun again.” ----------------------------- 1in6 is a national nonprofit organization supporting the estimated 1 in 6 men who have experienced sexual abuse or assault. 04:22
Here's a link to the fundraising campaign: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bristleconeproject/the-untold-stories-of-men-overcoming-sexual-abuse Please consider donating or sharing with friends! The Bristlecone Project was started a couple years ago by David Lisak, PhD, one of the world's leading clinical psychologists on the issue, and has now featured stories from over 60 men in our country, w/ 80 men who've volunteered to participate moving forward. To accommodate its growth, we've created a Kickstarter campaign through which we're looking to raise $50,000 - to partially cover costs associated with travel, production, post-production, and publishing. Please consider supporting the effort by donating and/or sharing this post with friends. It's important we begin de-stigmatizing the issue by bringing it into the conversation. We're here to let abused men know that they're not alone -- that we see them and hear their stories.

Men Also Coming Forward With Stories of Sexual Harassment

03:28
It's not just women who are a part of the viral #metoo social media campaign against sexual harassment. Men are coming forward, too. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission statistics show that about 16 percent of all sexual misconduct complaints are coming from male employees. It seems men prefer to stay silent about these encounters and are less likely to report the incidents. VOA's Daria Dieguts has more. Male Sexual Abuse - Jean-Paul Dufour’s Story | 1in6

08:09
"The grace of God can really reach from heaven down to the earth. And saved my life." Jean-Paul helps to protect the Governor-General of Canada, speaks publicly about child abuse, giving hope to others, and he remains faithful to God and to the boy who survived a childhood beyond imagination. Actually, Dickens’ stories were not permeated with the kind of horrific physical and sexual abuse that Jean-Paul endured. Jean-Paul was born into a family that was riddled with addiction and generations of violence and abuse. One scene: Jean-Paul, 12 years old, lying semi-conscious on the floor in a spreading pool of his own blood, after a savage beating by his own psychotic mother. Hours later, his father awakens him and tells him never to speak about this to anyone. And a second: alone with his father in a remote, northern Ontario cabin, forced to masturbate his father, terrified that he would otherwise be killed in an alcoholic rage. There were many years of struggle, years of addiction, delinquency, suicide attempts, and of violent behavior (he became a gang leader). Nights spent alone in a bed, hugging himself, weeping. But there were also angels – a guidance counselor, a doctor, a police officer, nuns – who brought grace into Jean-Paul’s life at crucial moments, who no doubt saved his life. At age 19 he attended a weekend Catholic retreat and, for the first time, experienced the love of God. He never again used drugs. And now this scene: Jean-Paul, age 19, at a psychiatric hospital to see his mother for the first time in five years. She is a shattered shadow of herself. She begs his forgiveness. And Jean-Paul embraces her, and gives her his forgiveness. After having the spiritual experience that cured his addiction, “I knew a little about forgiveness.” Today, Jean-Paul helps to protect the Governor-General of Canada, he speaks publicly about child abuse, giving hope to others, and he remains faithful to God and to the boy who survived a childhood beyond Dickens’ imagination. ----------------------------- 1in6 is a national nonprofit organization supporting the estimated 1 in 6 men who have experienced sexual abuse or assault. Men talk about sexual abuse - 5 - Who for?

As a result of the childhood sexual abuse I experienced while growing up, I have lived with a sense of isolation and mistrust of other people since my childhood. The traumatic effects on my life have been great but I am overcoming them so that they won't last a lifetime. As I undertake my journey of recovery, I realise that it can't just be for me: I want to help find ways to stop future generations of children from experiencing the sexual abuse that continues on a daily basis.

Sexual Abuse of Men: Bringing the Issue to Times Square (Full Version)

03:58
Please visit http://www.1in6.org for support in your journey to hope and healing. 1in6 traveled to New York City to celebrate a milestone for the inclusion of men in the issue of sexual abuse. A series of 8 billboards, the last of which directed people to 1in6.org, were shown for an entire week on Viacom billboards in Times Square. The billboards featured celebrities advocating for male survivors and awareness of the issue, and had the potential to reach millions of passerby. About the organization: 1 in 6 men in the United States were sexually abused before age 18. 1in6, a national non-profit, believes all men deserve happy, full lives. We acknowledge that this is difficult for approximately 21 million men in the U.S. who suffered sexual abuse as children because they often don't have the freedom or space to confront their emotional wounds in a healthy way. 1in6 offers outreach, information, services, and resources to men and anyone who cares about them, as well as professional trainings. It's common for male survivors to encounter a variety of negative effects stemming from their childhood abuse, including: addiction, isolation, anger, depression, shame, guilt, distrust, fear of intimacy, confusion about sexuality, etc. Sexual abuse can take on many forms, including: molestation, masturbation, verbal assault, inappropriate touching, grooming, fondling, intercourse/sex, rape, etc.
