How good is RAW video? (Canon 5D mark ii)

05:57
In this video, I test the new RAW video recording with the Canon 5D mark ii. Raw video recording gives you uncompressed video, which looks like it was shot with a big budget camera! To achieve this, you need to download and install the Magic Lantern hack in to your camera, and download the RAW build. You can read more about it here: http://www.magiclantern.fm/ PS. Be careful when installing the hack, because it may damage your camera. Since the RAW hack on the Canon 5D mark ii doesn't support FULL HD video capture when using the whole sensor, I shot everything in 2.35:1. To capture RAW video, you need a really fast CF/SD card. It's quite complicated to work with the RAW files in post production, but since it's RAW, it's a dream to colorcorrect the videos :) Thomas Leypoldt is a composer, and he have made the music for several of my videos. He does actually have a Youtube channel where he uploads his great filmatic soundtracks. I feel privileged to have a personal soundtrack. Thanks Thomas :) Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArVP6nlZEAE If your want to stay tuned with our videos, you can subscribe here on Youtube. 2.5K RAW ML @5:1 SETTINGS | Canon EOS M Film | Magic Lantern RAW Tutorial 2:25 - 2.5K Samples @5:1 Aspect Ratio Testing out the 2.5K Capability of the EOS M using Magic Lantern. You don't have to follow everything in the guide, it's just what I have been using. To get "really" crisp 2.5K, use the aspect ratio 1:1/1:2 but you only get two to three seconds. With 5:1 2520X1304, I can get continuous/a long amount of recording. Post Edit AR 5:1 2.5k: 1. Convert .MLV files to .Mov using 2.5k Resolution 2520x504(or higher if you like). 2. Using your editing software (e.g FCPX) adjust the X &Y values accordingly: X: 200% Y: 80% How I Grade ML Converted Footage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqEgLffmbHc&t=231s EOS Z LUT Shop: https://shoptly.com/zeekluts Enjoy!

Magic Lantern 5k/4k/3k RAW Test Shots

03:30
This was done a few days after Magic Lantern announced a new experimental build for the 5D Mark III. As soon as I found out about it I downloaded the new build (magiclantern-crop_rec_4k.2017Apr06.5D3123), drove up into the hills and tried to get a few shots in before it got too dark. The vintage lenses I used probably aren't ideal for this sort of test but they are what I had with me at the time. The 4K and UHD modes are not completely stable, I couldn't really get them to be usuable, either before of lower frame rates (below 24fps) or because I could only record for a few seconds (as a result of the 5DIII's CF card write speed. 3K however is very useable... no limit to the recording time in 24p until you reach the end of your CF card space. The 5k (at 5fps) looks absolutely incredible and I may use that from time to time on product shots or static landscapes. All of these new experimental modes I likely won't use in any sort of production environment solely because the real time preview is not accurate (slow framerate and the framing doesn't match completely) but its very fun to play with. I'm sure the ML team will continue to develop these. I did not have a single corrupt frame nor did the camera come close to overheating after performing these tests for a good 40 minutes. At the moment I do feel the normal 1080p RAW is completely usable in a production environment and I never think twice about using it.

Magic Lantern Raw vs H.264 test

01:14
#magiclantern #rawvideo #sunset This video demonstrates how much more color, contrast, and dynamic range can be extracted from the Canon EOS 70D's sensor by shooting RAW video. Raw video was shot at resolution of 1600 x 670 (2.39 aspect ratio) and then converted from .mlv file to .dng files using MLVFS (https://bitbucket.org/dmilligan/mlvfs/downloads/). DNG files were then imported and color graded in DaVinci Resolve and Adobe After Effects CC. I used the Technicolor Cinestyle profile while recording H.264 movies, and then added the Cinestyle lut along with minor color correction in Adobe Premiere Pro CC. Video was captured on Canon EOS 70D with EF 50mm STM f/1.8 lens using Magic Lantern firmware (https://builds.magiclantern.fm/70D-112.html). Canon EOS M Raw Film | Samyang Portraits | Upscaled 4K Magic Lantern RAW *As you all know, this camera is amazing at its price point. It has a lot of potential to match its footage close to the big guys. I can say that some clips as I was editing them look pretty close to the URSA footage, except for maybe dynamic range. Either way, still very impressed with this camera especially for the price. The indoor scenes were shot at ISO 100, I had to lift the shadows in post which created a bit of noise. Also a bit of aliasing present. June - Canon EOS M 10-bit RAW video in 2.5K resolution (4K)

03:34
Recorded with Canon EOS M using 18-55mm EF-M lens. Resolution 2520x1072 in 24 fps in Magic Lantern, up-scaled to 4K in rendering. Continuous recording using UHS-I U3 SD card in 10-bit lossless compression. Recorded using 5x zoom mode. Converted from MLV to CDNG with MLVApp. Edited, color corrected and graded in Davinci Resolve 14. Music: "New Light" by Kazukii https://soundcloud.com/ohthatkazuki/new-light I spent a bit more time with Davinci Resolve to colour grade the clips. I think I made progress in getting better balance in contrast, no more blown up highlights. What do you think? In June we have the Midnight Sun, which is the closing scene of this video.

12bit 5D Markii Magic Lantern Experimental Raw Video & Digic IV Development

06:15
Hello everyone ! sorry I've been away so long . I being putting my effort to farther developing Magic Lantern for the Digic IV camera's mainly the 5D Mark ii & 7D . I'm happy to report that we are very close in getting UHD/3.5K raw video & Lossless compression plus we have achieved 10-12bit raw video in 1:1 Liveview , but as a side effect this give corrupted 3x Crop_Mode video (Sorry I'm working on it) . I shot this video in 12bit 1856x1044 @ 23.976 fps with mlv_rec plus audio 44.1 khz , I was abled to get continuous raw video on my CF card 1066x Lexar 64GB , I shot a total of 30GB without dropping any frames. I had a write speed of 66MB/s with audio normally in 14bit @ 1856x928 write speed is about 69MB/s , so with a decrease in write speed and a increase in resolution .There is still problems that need to fixed e.g. only works with pure analog ISO's (100,200,400,800,1600) no digital push or pull ISO e.g. 160,320,500, etc. ... that causes a lockup/frozen liveview and needs the battery pulled , be on that it works will even has HDMI support without issue . I do like the 12bit image far better then 14bit , give a very nice cinematic image and very clean shadows. Edited & graded in FCPX with Film Convert Pro , used the "RED MX" for camera source ( closest to magic lantern raw for 5D2) KD P400 Ptra film emulation . Used my canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L Lens @ f4 200 ISO 23.976p with frame over ride set to exact. Hope everyone enjoy the magic lantern development update on the DIGIC IV Camera's . The uploaded file is a Apple ProRes4444 .

Evening Fall - Canon EOS M RAW video (3x3 pixel binning) (4K)

02:22
Recorded with Canon EOS M using 18-55mm kit lens, Canon FD 28mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.8 manual lenses. Resolution 1600x680 in 23.976 fps in Magic Lantern, up-scaled to 4K in rendering. Continuous recording using UHS-I U3 SD card in 10-bit RAW. Recorded using 3x3 720p pixel binning crop mode. See more details on this recording mode from http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=16608.0 Converted from MLV to CDNG with MLVProducer. Edited, color corrected and graded in Davinci Resolve 12.5. Music: Evening Fall Harp by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution licence (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1100236 Artist: http://incompetech.com/ EDIT1: I can see now after I uploaded the video, that there is some pixels missing from the center part of the frame. Maybe it's because MLVProducer can't hide the pink dots correctly, if you use 3x3 720p pixel binning crop video mode. Needs to be investigated further. If I get that pixel problem solved, I think this crop mode works really well and video quality is good. My favorite is still the 3x video crop mode. Next I'll be testing 10-bit RAW video with sound.

[*CINEMATIC*] CANON EOS M + MAGIC LANTERN RAW first test upscaled 4K

04:34
This video is my FIRST, EVER, video shot in RAW with my newly purchased (3 weeks ago, second-hand, but almost brand new, great bargain!), CANON EOS M with firmware 2.02, on which I installed ML firmware hack. Clips shot in Milan City Centre last Saturday, on the very last Carnival Day. Clips shot via ML, 1728x584 RAW resolution, 24fps, stretched in post by 1.62 to give 946 pixel vertical resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio. Used MLVApp for converting/color correcting the RAW files to ProRes 4:2:2. Imported and edited in DaVinci Resolve for clips cutting, color grading (through a slightly modified Orange&Teal LUT,) and BG music, then exported the rendered video (3840x1736 2.21 video format with 143Mb/s average bit-rate). Imported this into PowerDirector 365 for further color enhancement/correction and some masking in a couple of clips. Then exported the final video (upscaled) to full 4K resolution 3840x2160 24fps including automatic black bars at the top and bottom of the frame. Video file size: 2.75GB, average bit-rate: 84Mb/s. This is my first experiment/test with ML, so for the time being only experimented with basic MLV RAW shooting. With time and experience using ML, and also with a proper ML build, will obviously experiment also with 2.5K/3K (may be more) resolution in crop mode. 2.6K Magic Lantern RAW Video | Canon EOS 5D Mark II | EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II | Elgersburg

01:36
This time I tested reddeercity's latest 2.6K build on my old 5D Mark II. The resolution you get is 2624x1200 - a aspect ratio (~2.2:1) which I really love a lot and which is very usable. The resolution and picture quality is superb! On the downside, the recorded cropped frame is not perfectly centered yet. This means, when using a lens like the EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II, one side of the image (here the right side) is a bit unsharp, because it is closer to the lens border. I focused each clip very carefully, but in some clips you'll think I was drunken... but I am sure, after searching for a while you'll see "something in focus" (mostly more in the left part of the picture, because cropped area is a bit more right on the sensor) ;) The clips are recorded at f/2.8..4.0, 1/48sec, ISO100, 23.98fps. I used a ND fader filter. All clips were processed in MLVApp v1.6 only! The video was recorded around and in Elgersburg (Germany). Canon EOS M Magic Lantern RAW video with SD UHS hack (Part 1)

02:17
First test with the Magic Lantern SD UHS overclock hack on a Canon EOS M. Shot at 2520x1080, 5x zoom mode, 24 fps, 12 bit lossless compressed raw using sd_uhs module. Big thanks to the Magic Lantern community for making this possible. This is a 2 minute continuous test run. ISO is at 400 so there is noise, but it's not too visible due to the higher resolution. MLV App used for transcoding MLV to cdng, with a quick grade on Davinci Resolve (no post sharpening). Exported .mov file seems to have a slight colour shift compared to preview in Resolve. Upscaled to UHD for youtube upload. At this resolution image crop is 3.33x from 35mm full frame. Warning: the sd_uhs module is highly experimental and can destroy your sd card or camera. There have been instances of sd cards breaking. As far as I understand, Magic Lantern does not recommend its use because of the risk involved. September - Canon EOS M 14-bit RAW video in mv1080p mode (4K)

03:16
Recorded with Canon EOS M using 18-55mm EF-M lens. Resolution 1736x736 in 24 fps in Magic Lantern, up-scaled to 4K in rendering. Continuous recording using UHS-I U3 SD card in 14-bit lossless compression (with SD-card hack). Recorded using mv1080p mode. Converted from MLV to CDNG with MLVApp. Edited, color corrected and graded in Davinci Resolve 14. Music "Desolate" by Kazukii https://soundcloud.com/ohthatkazuki/desolate This is shot with the Aug 07 version from the mv1080p hack. I think it's now very stable, if you shoot in 14-bit. It works also with 1736x976 resolution, if you want to shoot in 16:9 aspect ratio. I've just purchased an used 5Dmk2 together with 24-70mm f4 L USM lens. There's some recent development done to increase the RAW video resolution to 2.5K with 5Dmk2. It's interesting to see, how my new combo performs in RAW video compared to my trusty EOS M. I hope the video quality is going to better, as the price of the new combo is 5 times higher. But I have still the October video to shoot with EOS M to complete my full year calendar. Anyways EOS M will stay in my camera pack and I'll keep it with when I'm travelling or just want to travel light. It is awesome camera and so undervalued.

Brighton | 5D Mark II 3K raw with Magic Lantern

03:08
October I finally repaired my 5D mark II after it being broken for 6 months because of all the magic lantern progress (https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=19336.0). October is also the month the 5D mark II turned 10 years old, so happy birthday to it. Filmed with 2880x1080 resolution in 12 bit raw. This video took a month to edit. Would like to change some things but uploading takes hours. Lenses: Helios 44, Jupiter 9, Takumar 135mm 3.5 and Cosina 19-35 for one shot Made using 100% free (open source) software. Magic Lantern on the camera. Graded and converted to prores in MLV App (https://github.com/ilia3101/MLV-App), the world's best raw converter for Magic Lantern video, 10/10. Edited in Pitivi(why it took a month to edit). On Linux. Also, just like in my London video, there is an MLV App issue: this video was made before it had camera matrix colour correction and scientific white balance , so the colour quality of this video is worse than it would have been had I made it a couple of weeks later. Gymnopedie No. 1 Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Note: there is a horrible stuttering issue because of how YouTube has processed the file. Motion looks awful. I do not know how to fix this. The issue is not present on phone YouTube. Note 2: Looks fixed Note 3: no I think it's not, original file motion looks better

January - Canon EOS M 12-bit RAW video in 3x3 pixel binning mode (4K)

03:30
Recorded with Canon EOS M using 18-55mm kit lens. Resolution 1736x688 in 24 fps in Magic Lantern, up-scaled to 4K in rendering. Continuous recording using UHS-I U3 SD card in 12-bit lossless compression. Recorded using video crop mode. Converted from MLV to CDNG with MLV App. Edited, color corrected and graded in Davinci Resolve 14. Music: Spikey - Musical landscapes https://soundcloud.com/spikey I found a new tool to process MLV files to CDNG. Application is called MLV App and you can download it from https://ilia3101.github.io/MLV-App/. This application can handle lossless compressed MLV files and removes the focus pixels very well as you can see from my video. Using MLV Lite RAW recording, you can get continuous recording in 1736x688 resolution using 12-bit lossless compression. If you activate 5xzoom in Canon menu first and then in ML choose MLV lite RAW recording, you can get max. resolution 2520x1072. However clips are then only max. 4 sec long. But in 1920x818 resolution you can continuous recording with 11-bit lossless compression. I'm going to test these higher resolutions in my next video.

Raw video test shot and sample movie of Canon EOS 7D Magic Lantern. I used Nightly.2014Oct08 version. I think you can see very details of the hair of the dog. That's so awesome. By the way, my dog's name is Rocky. But she is female. And she is grandma. And I used Warp Stabilizer VFX of After Effects to some cuts in the latter half of this video. Anyway, ML have some limits like a shoot time and resolution, but it will give us really incredible results. I appreciate project team of ML. shot with: Canon EOS 7D Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM SIGMA 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM SanDisk Extreme 60MB/s 32GB Magic Lantern http://www.magiclantern.fm/ Canon EOS 7DのMagic LanternのRAWテストとサンプルムービーです。Nightly.2014Oct08バージョンを使用しています。

August - Canon EOS M 14-bit RAW video in mv1080p mode (4K)

03:06
Recorded with Canon EOS M using 18-55mm EF-M lens. Resolution 1736x1120 in 24 fps in Magic Lantern (cropped to 1736x738 in post), up-scaled to 4K in rendering. Continuous recording using UHS-I U3 SD card in 14-bit lossless compression (with SD-card hack). Recorded using mv1080p mode. Converted from MLV to CDNG with MLVApp. Edited, color corrected and graded in Davinci Resolve 14. Music: "Breakthru" by W!ld T4ing https://soundcloud.com/wildt4ing My first test with new mv1080p mode. Nice to shoot some video without any zoom effect. However I believe the final video was slightly off (~15%) from top to bottom in the live view and the sky was cut off and the front was more visible. I also tried to use my new EF-M 22mm f2.0 lens, but it is really difficult to shoot video hand held without image stabilisation. I think I've done enough testing with EOS M and RAW video. I purchase soon used Canon 5D Mark II and I want to explore the video capabilities of that DSRL with Magic Lantern. Stay tuned.

Canon 5D Mark II RAW Footage

01:51
Yet another Canon RAW video! Kinda just got around to testing it out. WATCH IN HD BUT NOT FULLSCREEN, given that I shot this at 1280 x 540, due to my low CF card speed. MUSIC: "Form by Firelight" by Jon Hopkins Below is a more detailed description including resolutions, recording times, card speeds, etc (stuff that ML users or people looking to try out ML might want to know). If you don't get all that stuff, then all you need to know is this: RAW is awesome. Up until a few months ago, Canon DSLRs were not able to shoot 14-bit RAW. That was limited to mostly RED or Black Magic cameras. Thanks to the folks at Magic Lantern (magiclantern.fm), certain resolutions of RAW can be shot on Canon DSLRs. Why shoot RAW? The RAW file format allows for superior color correcting, sharpness, and minimum image compression. By default, Canon DSLRs shoot in H264. This codec is good, but some image information is lost along the way. So that's that. I hope to get a faster CF card and shoot at a higher res if possible. Thanks ML for making all of this possible! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Greetings! This is my first time using ML, and really only tested out the RAW video function as you can see in the video. I'm using an 8GB 15 MB/s CF SanDisk, shooting at a RAW res of 1280 x 540. At that size, I can shoot for about 4-6 seconds before frames start skipping. At certain parts in this video, you can see a little frame jump (not the purple stuff)...in the source footage, that usually happened at about 4-5 seconds, so essentially, the shot is thrown off and ruined after that point. At least from an editing standpoint. I'm using a Canon 5D Mark ii, and plan on getting a faster card. I've heard you can do 1080p RAW on faster cards, but not sure if that works for Mark ii, or for how long the shot stays clean before skipping. I shot everything with a Canon 24-105mm at varying apertures and shutter speeds. I'm still not sure as to why ML reads that it's recording at 23.976 fps, yet the source footage I get after the raw2dng process says 30 fps in Adobe After Effects... For coloring, I used Photoshop Camera RAW, varying the Shadow/Highlight attributes, but giving everything a sharpness of +5, and +20 vibrance. Additionally, only two shots (dolly forward of dead leafs, and close up of rocks and sun flare) have been stabilized using Warp Stabilizer in AE...so those may possibly look more like H264 DSLR footage due to the scale-in. If you have any more questions just let me know; I'm still learning quite a bit too!

CANON EOS M + ML 1600x900 RAW test footage - DaVinci Resolve 16 - upscaled 4K

05:47
Here I’m testing out MagicLantern Danne’s build (March 29th, 2019) with the “MCM rewire” mv 1080p RAW video at 1600x900 resolution, 25fps, shutter speed 1/55th. That day it was a beautiful, nicely warm, day (though a bit windy) with an incredibly blue sky with scattered and cumulo-stratus clouds, that at some point seemed to be announcing a thunderstorm, which didn’t come btw. So, I took my EOS M and decided to have a walk in my home town and take some shots around and in different places, just to test this build. I used the kit lens EOS-M 15-45mm IS STM to shoot those clips. Clips converted via MVLApp and then imported in DaVinci Resolve 16 (Beta) for conversion and preliminary color/exposure balancing/correction and grading, for which I used a specific NewBlue’s FX color filter. The Gift | CANON 6D Magic Lantern RAW

02:26
Please enjoy this short film about my thoughts surounding the concept of music. Again this movie was shot on my Canon 6D using Magic Lantern to get the best quality RAW files this camera can give me. I know I haven't been uploading in a while but that's all going to change going forward. This year I will be focussing on uploading and building up my channel. The first shot is a timelapse of the moon when it was very visible late last year. I also threw in a hyperlapse to spice things up a bit. We might not all like the same types of music, but everyone has an affection for some sort of music. It is like it’s hardcoded into our DNA. The dictionary defines music as... [an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.] [any sweet, pleasing, or harmonious sounds] Do you ever think of what the essence of music is actually about? Recently someone told me that music is a gift. A divine gift. Making music is a way of expressing our thoughts and emotions like no other. Even the most basic instruments can be captivating when I see them being mastered by skilled musicians. It’s an amazing thing. Take drums for example. A simple assortment of percussion instruments. Yet capable of setting the most rusty person into motion. Or the Guitar. The instrument that symbolises passion. Watching someone playing the strings can be hypnotising at times. Funny thing is, even though I have three of them hanging from my wall. They have become nothing more than decorations collecting dust. Keys. What’s special about the playing the keys is that each and every fingertip produces a different sound. There are eighty-eight keys on a piano and within that, an entire universe. Even controlling the Soundboard is an artform. Finding a perfect balance between levels and a right mix between all the instruments is a difficult thing. But I was given another kind of gift. My weapon of choice is the microphone. It is when I sing I feel a sense of purpose. The gift that was given to me - my voice - I use it to give back. If there was no other thing in life that I could do other than to sing I would still live on having purpose. One of my biggest fears is losing this gift. Because that would mean I would not be able to keep on… keep on giving. What’s your gift?
