Foreign Affairs LIVE: The New American Presidency and Its Global Impact

01:21:44
With a dramatic U.S. Presidential election behind us, the world waits to see how the new administration will show leadership and define policies that have an impact far beyond America’s borders. In this panel organized by Foreign Affairs magazine, three renowned experts discuss what the new presidency holds for the most pressing foreign policy challenges and opportunities of our time. They will address geopolitical tensions wrought by the rise of the Islamic State, cyberattacks and North Korea missile launches. Meanwhile, the fate of global markets in the wake of Brexit and expectations for the continued development of free trade agreements add to a mounting agenda of economic issues. Foreign Affairs managing editor Jonathan Tepperman moderates. The panel will be followed by "Asia and the World: Managing the Rise of Asia," featuring the Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, Kishore Mahbubani. Has the Game Changed? is a conference created in partnership with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, Foreign Affairs, and the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA).

Foreign Policy: Crash Course Government and Politics #50

10:00
Today Craig finishes up our series on U.S. Government and Politics by talking about both the least and most important aspect of government: foreign policy. Foreign policy is important because it has the potential to affect the largest number of people, but at the same time, it tends to play a minimal role in our perception of the government (unless we’re at war). Foreign policy addresses diplomacy, security, human rights, economics, and the environment at a global scale, and we’re going to talk about how our government has approached each of these policies in the past and which it tends to hold most important. As with all things political, the decisions made in fulfilling these policies can be pretty controversial, especially when considering that the President often has the last word in these issues. We hope this series has helped you better understand the way the U.S. government works and hopefully encouraged you to participate in the political process - here or wherever you may live. Russian and Chinese Assertiveness Poses New Foreign Policy Challenges

56:39
Former defense secretary Robert Gates sits down with CNN's Fareed Zakaria to give his perspective on U.S. foreign policy. Gates warns that recent efforts by the United States to shift some of the burden of global leadership to its allies may have spurred Russia and China to act more aggressively in pursuit of their interests. He also suggests that a federalized Ukraine with significant autonomy for the eastern part of the country could be the formula for an acceptable compromise with Russia and a de-escalation of tensions. III BRAZIL INVESTMENT DAY 28 Nov. 2013 - The Council on Foreign Relations - www.cfr.org

02:01
FOREIGN AFFAIRS & THINKLINK PRESENTED THE III ANUAL BRAZIL INVESTMENT DAY AT THE COUNCIL ON FOREIGN REALTIONS www.cfr.org On December 3, Foreign Affairs magazine hosted its third annual Brazil Investment Conference. The event featured top Brazilian and U.S. business and policy leaders discussing major trends and challenges surrounding investment opportunities in Brazil. Organized by Foreign Affairs with communications firm ThinkLink, the half-day conference took place at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York and was streamed live online. The opening keynote session featured Brazilian minister of development, industry, and foreign trade Fernando Damata Pimentel in a conversation with author and economist Albert Fishlow. The minister addressed the necessary components for Brazil's continued growth and competitiveness. Notably, Minister Pimentel called for acceleration of bilateral trade agreements with the European Union and the United States. After opening remarks by Congressman Marco Maia of the Worker's Party, the following keynote panel featured Council on Foreign Relations Senior Fellow Shannon O'Neil, PricewaterhouseCoopers Emerging Markets Leader and Chief Economist Harry G. Broadman, former assistant secretary of state Jose W. Fernandez, and Wilson Center Brazil Institute Director Paulo Sotero. The panelists discussed the significant obstacles facing Brazil in establishing a sustainable model for economic growth. They highlighted specific limitations such as domestic supply-side constraints and persistent inflationary pressures. They underscored the need for a steady, measured pace of fiscal consolidation, anchored on Brazil's long-standing primary surplus target. The plenary session on innovation featured Marcos Troyjo, director of Columbia University's BRICLab; Richard J. Coyle, executive director of the Emerging Markets Institute at Cornell University's Johnson School; Carlos Zanvettor, CEO of Grupo Contax; and moderator Nathalie Hoffman, CEO of Brazil Business Link. They discussed how technology-driven business model innovations will address today's most complex economic and environmental sustainability challenges. The discussion highlighted Brazil's need to create an "innovation environment" in order for business in the country to truly flourish The closing plenary session on Brazil's long term energy future featured Andrés R. Gluski, director, president, and CEO of AES Corporation; José Carlos Meirelles, partner at Pinheiro Neto Advogados; R. Blair Thomas, CEO of EIG Global Energy Partners; Jorge H. Kamine, counsel in the energy and infrastructure group at Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom; and moderator Kassia Yanosek, a consultant and energy expert from McKinsey & Company. The panelists discussed how current government policies concentrate mainly on the improvement of energy efficiency, in both residential and industrial sectors, as well as increasing development and availability of power generated by renewable energy sources. Further restructuring of the energy sector will be one of the key issues for ensuring sufficient energy investments to meet the rising need for fuel and electricity The Brazil Investment Conference is part of the magazine's larger effort to advance the global conversation on economic development and growth in emerging markets; notably in the areas of innovation, sustainability, infrastructure, and global competitiveness. The upcoming January/February 2014 issue of the magazine will contain a special section highlighting new emerging markets. FOREIGN AFFAIRS ABOUT AZERBAIJAN

01:39
The American magazine Foreign Affairs has published an article of Senior Fellow at the Middle East Institute and at the Jamestown Foundation in Washington, D.C., Alex Vatanka about the cooperation between Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia. The author of the article cites that on August 8, the leaders of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia held a trilateral summit in Baku dedicated to the regional projects of the economic integration, especially the international transport corridor “North-South”. The conflicts in Iraq and Syria, the issues of the fight against terrorism and extremism were also mulled at the summit. Alex Vatanka further mentions that Azerbaijan welcomes the statements of Iran and Russia on the readiness to work jointly for the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. He notes that Azerbaijan, which is a secular country, is also concerned over the conflicts in Iraq, Syria and the growth of religious radicalism. The expert highlights that the ideology of the so-called “Islamic State” is considered a national threat for Azerbaijan. He also writes about the recruitment of “jihadists” in Central Asian countries. Vatanka goes on to add that Islamists were not successful in Azerbaijan for two reasons. The first one is that after gaining independence in 1991, Azerbaijan preserved its secularity. The second reason is that due to the oil revenues, Azerbaijan has reached the economic growth, which has led to the emergence of the middle class. Thus, according to Vatanka, the excellent social and economic conditions created in Azerbaijan have declined the attractiveness of rhetoric and the Islamist ideology.

Check out Mark's books in paperback on Amazon.com or e-book on Kindle, Nook, or Google Play. Mark frequently stirs up controversy from his commentaries, protests, and boycotts, and has repeatedly been featured in major media outlets around the world. Several of Mark's YouTube videos have gone viral, earning him a mention on ABC's The View, Fox News' O'Reilly Factor, TMZ.com, and other mainstream media outlets. Mark has also been featured in (or attacked in) the New York Post's Page Six, Rolling Stone Magazine, USA Today, The New York Daily News, and in major papers in Pakistan and Iran. Mark Dice appears in several documentary films including Invisible Empire, The 9/11 Chronicles, and has been featured on the History Channel's Decoded and the Sundance Channel's Love/Lust: Secret Societies and more. He enjoys enlightening zombies, as he calls them, (ignorant people) about the mass media's effect on our culture, pointing out Big Brother's prying eyes, and exposing elite secret societies along with scumbag politicians and their corrupt political agendas. You can support Mark's work by sending a PayPal donation to [email protected] or by using the Donate link on MarkDice.com. He has called into several top-rated talk shows dozens of times, including the Sean Hannity Show, Glenn Beck, and Michael Savage, and verbally battles with the hosts on various issues since he has never been asked to be a guest on them as of yet. Audio of some of these calls are then posted online. The term "fighting the New World Order" is used by Mark to describe some of his activities, and refers to his and others' resistance and opposition (The Resistance) to the overall system of political corruption, illegal wars, elite secret societies, mainstream media, Big Brother and privacy issues; as well as various economic and social issues. Dice and his supporters sometimes refer to being "awake" or "enlightened" and see their knowledge of these topics as part of their own personal Resistance to the corrupt New World Order. This Resistance involves self-improvement, self-sufficiency, personal responsibility and spiritual growth. Mark Dice is the author of several books on current events, secret societies and conspiracies, including his newest book, Big Brother: The Orwellian Nightmare Come True which is available on Amazon.com, Kindle and Nook. While much of Mark's work confirms the existence and continued operation of the Illuminati today, he is also dedicated to debunking conspiracy theories and hoaxes and separating the facts from the fiction; hence the "Facts & Fiction" subtitle for several of his books. He has a bachelor's degree in communication. If you have an iPad or Android tablet, then you can download the Kindle app and then download any of Mark's books from the Kindle store for only $6.99 or $7.99. Some of them are also available in e-book on Google Play. Or you can get paperback copies from Amazon.com too if you prefer a physical book. They are not available in stores. A lot of work and research went into them and they'll save you countless hours of web surfing or YouTube watching in your search for pieces of the puzzle. Your support also funds more of Mark's videos and other operations. Equipment, software, travel, and the props all cost money, so by purchasing his paperback books and e-books, you are helping The Resistance continue and your help is greatly appreciated. EU membership has been a key component of the UK’s diplomacy and foreign policy since 1973. There is no precedent for a country choosing to exit the European Union. This means that the consequences for the UK’s foreign and security policy of a departure from the EU are uncertain and the full costs cannot be calculated on the basis of any available evidence. The Brexit challenge for the UK’s foreign, security and defence policy will be to simultaneously re-tool its policies towards the EU, its bilateral relationships with the remaining member states and its relationship to the wider world. Does this new context for Britain’s foreign policy provide new opportunity for international influence or is the UK now consigned to diminished position within global politics? ABOUT PROFESSOR RICHARD G. WHITMAN Professor Richard G. Whitman is Visiting Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) and Director of the Global Europe Centre and Professor of Politics and International Relations at the University of Kent. His current research interests include Brexit and especially the future foreign and security and defence policies of the EU and the UK, and the governance and future priorities of the EU. He is the author and editor of ten books and has published over sixty articles and book chapters. In 2016 he was a Senior Fellow for the ESRC’s UK in a Changing Europe programme. He is a Visiting Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House), an Academic Fellow of the European Policy Centre (EPC) and an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences. "We are not going to achieve a new world order without paying for it in blood as well as in words and money." - Arthur Schlesinger Jr. - Foreign Affairs (July/August 1995) "We are grateful to the Washington Post the New York TimesTime magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected the promises of discretion for almost forty years. It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subject to the bright lights of publicity during those years. But the world is now more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world-government. The supranational sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the National auto-determination practiced in past centuries" - David Rockefeller Member CFR "The powers of financial capitalism had (a) far-reaching aim nothing less than to create a world system of financial control in private hands able to dominate the political system of each country and the economy of the world as a whole. This system was to be controlled in a feudalist fashion by the central banks of the world acting in concert by secret agreements arrived at in frequent meetings and conferences. The apex of the systems was to be the Bank for International Settlements in Basel Switzerland a private bank owned and controlled by the world's central banks which were themselves private corporations. Each central bank...sought to dominate its government by its ability to control Treasury loans to manipulate foreign exchanges to influence the level of economic activity in the country and to influence cooperative politicians by subsequent economic rewards in the business world." - Carroll Quigley member of Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) mentor to Bill Clinton quote from "Tragedy and Hope" 1966 "The sovereignty fetish is still so strong in the public mind that there would appear to be little chance of winning popular assent to American membership in anything approaching a super-state organization. The framers (of the Constitution) have simply been too shrewd for us. They have outwitted us. They designed separate institutions that cannot be unified by mechanical linkages frail bridges(or) tinkering. If we are to turn the founders upside down... we must directly confront the Constitutional structure they erected." - James MacGregor Burns Council on Foreign Relations member 1984 "The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is the American Branch of a society which originated in England... Triple Axis: Iran's Relations with Russia and China

01:19:00
November 14, 2018 New York, NY The most significant challenge to the post-Cold War international order is the growing power of ambitious states opposed to the West. Iran, Russia, and China are taking advantage of the U.S. withdrawal from the world stage and while they seek opportunity, cooperation between them remains fragmentary. Join us for breakfast and a conversation with authors Dina Esfandiary and Ariane Tabatabai on their comprehensive study of how Iran interacts with Russia and China in the realms of energy, trade, and military security. With the end of Western sanctions and the Iranian nuclear deal, the Syrian conflict, and new institutions in Central and East Asia, the potential for unity or divergence is striking and the result will shape global politics for decades to come. The Islamic State, Iran, and the Geopolitics of the Middle East

01:11:23
Adam Garfinkle March 17, 2015 Stan and Arlene Ginsburg Family Foundation Lecture Series To understand the Middle East, a region riven by conflict, you need an expert "geopolitician" to explain the chessboard -- for example, in finding the balance to our interest in defeating the Islamic State with our interest in preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear weapons state or in exercising hegemony over the region. Few analysts are better able to explain the sources of conflict or their potential resolution in their larger historical, cultural, and geographical contexts than Adam Garfinkle. In this year of our 60th anniversary, we take special note of those, like Adam, who got their start in this field at the Foreign Policy Research Institute. Adam went on to serve on the staff of the US National Security Commission/21st Century, then as principal speechwriter to the Secretary of State (Colin Powell). He has also been editor of The National Interest magazine and is now editor of The American Interest magazine, both significant sources of analysis and understanding of American foreign policy choices today. He received his Ph.D. in international relations from the University of Pennsylvania and serves on FPRI's Board of Advisors.
