Vintage Footage London School of Jewish Song "Shir" 1977

04:23
Part 2 http://www.gruntig.net/2019/01/vintage-footage-lsjs-ani-maamin-1977.html In 1977 the Jewish music scene was quite different than today. MBD had already released a few albums, with the album "I'd Rather Pray and Sing" being released the year before, Avraham Fried hadn't yet began his professional adult career. Instead there was the Ohr Chodosh, Yeshiva Diaspora, the Rabbi's Sons, and some others. Even the boys choirs of today were either just starting out or non existent. While Miami Boys choir were just beginning out that very year, Tzlil V'zemer was still a few years away from forming, and the Yeshiva Boys choir a few decades. In the USA there was Eli Teitelbaum Pirchei Boys Choir, in England Yigal Calek and the London School of Jewish Song. Yigal Calek a legendary composer and choir director was so popular back then, that in the early 1970's a young MBD would open for concerts by the the London group. Established in 1968, The London School of Jewish Song released in 1976 "London Live" an 11 track record of song recorded live at concerts while touring Europe and the USA. The footage below was recorded off of a live performance on Local Minneapolis television, prior to their Chanukah concert arranged by Chabad of Minnesota, directed by Rabbi Moshe Feller. Introducing the choir is a younger Rabbi Manis Friedman long time Chabad Shliach in the Twin Cities, and director of the Beis Chana school for girls. Watch below the Pirchei London Choir sing "Shir". Soloist is Philip Rosenberg. Part two of this series will Iy'h be released in the coming days.

The Girls Who Fled To Syria: Groomed By The Islamic State

23:03
In February 2015, three teenage schoolgirls left the comfort of their homes in East London and traveled to Syria to join the self-styled Islamic State (IS). Around 60 women and girls are thought to have made the same journey from Britain. The story of their disappearance dominated the UK press for weeks and the blame game inevitably began to hunt out whose fault it was. When the families of Amira Abase, Shamima Begum, and Kadiza Sultana found out that the police had been interviewing the trio about another girl from their school who had already joined IS, the case was picked up for investigation by the government. But soon certain sections of the press would turn on the families themselves. VICE News gained intimate access to the father of one girl, Amira, and joined him as he dealt with the press and parliament to find out what it's like for those left behind by the tragic choices of their loved ones. For nothing in my life's path would have predicted that I would be standing here as the first African-American First Lady of the United States of America." 4. Wide shot of Mrs. Obama at podium 5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Michelle Obama, US First Lady: "I am an example of what is possible when girls from the very beginning of their lives are loved and nurtured by the people around them. SOUNDBITE: (English) Michelle Obama, US First Lady: "Sorry. I don't know if anybody is cutting class. I never did it. I loved getting A's. I like being smart. I liked being on time. I liked getting my work done. I thought being smart was cooler than anything in the world. And you too with these same values can control your own destiny. You too can pave the way." 8. Audience applause at conclusion of Obama's speech, zoom in to her on stage 9. Mrs. Obama walks over to students on stage and hugs them UPSOUND: audience cheering 10. Wide of audience 11. Mrs. Obama hugging students 12. Mrs. Obama waves goodbye and then moves down stage to hug girls in audience, girls run up to edge of stage STORYLINE US First Lady Michelle Obama appeared to win over both the British press and public on Thursday as she accompanied her husband, US President Barack Obama to London while he attended the G20 summit. While the leaders of the world were discussing the future of the world's economies, Mrs Obama made a surprise visit to an all-girls school in north London. She spoke to the pupils at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School about growing up on Chicago's south side, and urged them to think of education as "cool." "I never cut class. I liked being smart. I liked getting A's," she told the assembled girls. She spoke of the importance of love, strong values, education and a "whole lot of hard work" as she described her childhood, and said: "You too, with these values, can control your own destiny, you too can pave the way." Mrs Obama also tried to draw similarities between her life and the lives of the members of her young audience, saying they had very much in common. "For nothing in my life's path would have predicted that I would be standing here as the first African-American First Lady of the United States of America" she said. Before leaving, Mrs Obama stopped to hug as many pupils as she could and was mobbed by excited girls as she leant over the stage to greet them. The visit to the all-girls school - her first solo visit during the G20 Summit - echoes her Women In Excellence programme in America, which aims to empower and inspire young women.
