Steve Jobs Talks Lean Six Sigma core principles
Interview with Steve Jobs made in the 1990s He covers some of the core principles of Lean Six Sigma ( without him necessarily knowing it !) 1. Listening to Voice of the Customer 2. Quality is about the product or service being delivered being fit for purpose, free from defects and delivered on time ... it is defined by what your customers think about your products 3. Empowerment and respect for your workers as problem solvers and belief in their creative capacity to improve your processes. Who is Lean Six Sigma Training Ltd ? Lean Six Sigma Training Ltd is an IASSC Accredited Training Organization with both online and classroom based training courses in Lean Six Sigma methodology, tools & techniques to businesses and individuals in the North of England, Switzerland and the United States. Our training follows the ISO-13053 and ISO-18404 guidelines for Lean Six Sigma. Lean focuses on value through the relentless elimination of waste and acceleration in the velocity of processes. Its origins can be traced to Henry Ford of Ford Motor Company and Taiichi Ohno of Toyota. Value is defined in terms of what is important to the customer. Value-add work is something your customer is willing to pay for. For example, does the task add a desired function or feature to the product or service? Or does the task enable a competitive advantage (faster delivery, fewer defects, lower price)? Non-value work, or waste, includes activities the customer is not willing to pay for. There are eight commonly known forms of waste that can be remembered using the acronym DOWNTIME: Defects, Overproduction, Waiting, Non-Essential Processing, Transportation, Inventory (too much or too little), Motion, and Employee Creativity. Increasing the velocity of processes is not about working faster, but speeding up the entire end-to-end process or lead time. Think of lead time as the time it takes once you order a book from Amazon to the time you receive the book. Six Sigma is a well defined, customer focused management system that strives for the delivery of near-perfect products or services. Six Sigma's goals are to reduce defects and variation so that processes are more consistent and predictable. Originated by Motorola in the 1980s, Six Sigma translates into 99.9997 percent quality or yield. Dial tone of traditional landline phones, for example, was designed to be available 99.9997 percent of the time. Like Lean, Six Sigma places the customer first. It embraces data to make sound decisions. What has made Six Sigma so popular is the money it has saved companies. According to Praveen Gupta, "Companies have reported saving in the billions of dollars. No other methodology comes close to Six Sigma for savings."
Lean manufacturing, lean practices, lean manufacturing benifits, Lean manufacturing or lean production, often simply "lean", is a systematic method for waste minimization ("Muda") within a manufacturing system without sacrificing productivity. Lean also takes into account waste created through overburden ("Muri") and waste created through unevenness in work loads ("Mura"). Working ... Lean Manufacturing is a term that has been around now for many years, originally spawned within the MIT study that led to the book “The Machine That Changed the World ” by Womack and Jones in 1990. Just in Time by Toyota: The Smartest Production System in The World
Whenever you buy a complex piece of equipment such as a TV or a car, do you ever wonder: how exactly did they put this all together? This video analyzes Toyota's Just in Time production system. Well, ever since the industrial revolution, that “how” has been a vital question for many businesses. Today, we’re going to look at how in post-war Japan, Toyota helped to create one of the smartest production systems that we have, named “Just In Time”. We’ll look at how it works and how you can apply the philosophy and practises to many other areas of business too. After World War 2, Japan faced some difficult problems; they didn’t have a lot of cash, resources were scarce, and there wasn’t a lot of free land to expand factories. However, Taiichi Ohno at Toyota managed to turn these problems into advantages by slowly creating the Just In Time system. The idea didn’t all come at once, it’s more that through the 50s and 60s, various changes were implemented and improved until the 70s were the wider world began to realise the benefits and start to adopt a similar approach. 5S Methodology and Tips
5S Methodology with tips based on experience is explained in this video. Join us: http://www.patreon.com/leanvlog You can read the complete 5S Methodology here: http://leanmanufacturingpdf.com/5s-lean/ This start from 5 japanese words: Seiri Seiton Seiso Seiketsu Shitsuke Even if it is cool in japanese :-), I prefer to remember them in English. The list describes how to organize a work space for efficiency and effectiveness by identifying and storing the items used, maintaining the area and items, and sustaining the new order. Sort Eliminate all unnecessary tools, parts. Go through all tools, materials, and so forth in the plant and work area. Keep only essential items and eliminate what is not required, prioritizing things per requirements and keeping them in easily-accessible places. Everything else is stored or discarded. Set in Order Arrange the work, workers, equipment, parts, and instructions. In such a way that the work flows free of waste through the value added tasks with a division of labor necessary to meet demand. Shine Clean the workspace and all equipment, and keep it clean, tidy and organized. At the end of each shift, clean the work area and be sure everything is restored to its place. This step ensures that the workstation is ready for the next user and that order is sustained. Standardize Ensure uniform procedures and setups throughout the operation. Promote interchangeability. Sustain Make it a way of life. This means commitment. Ensure disciplined adherence to rules and procedures of 5S to prevent backsliding. Using this 5S Methodology and the tips based on a real experience you will get extraordinary results. ツ CONNECT WITH ME ツ Leave a comment on this video and it'll get a response. How to apply Lean Management in your organisation | Seif Shieshakly
Lean is often known by many names: Toyota Production System i.e. TPS, Lean manufacturing, Lean production, Lean leadership, Lean Six Sigma. However the ideas behind Lean concepts all share the same basic principles. Lean is a management philosophy - a way of thinking. It considers first and foremost what the customer is willing to pay for or in other words - added value. Activities that do not add value to the end product or customer are defined as waste and should be reduced or eliminated to free up resources to be used for adding value. The second major component of Lean is the respect for the employee and their role in adding value to the end product or customer. Employees who embrace Lean principles are empowered and motivated to critically look at value generating activities and continuously improve them or eliminate those that don't. Lean is neither a new idea nor is it only focused on one industry or discipline. Origins of and contributions to Lean principles can be found throughout distant history. The influence of Lean on the modern industrial era has been shaped by the works of several individuals including industrialist Henry Ford and management luminaries such as W. Edwards Deming and Joseph Moses Juran. These publications highlight Toyota's journey from its post Second World War manufacturing operations to what is today known as the Toyota Production System (TPS). Key elements attributing to Toyota's superior performance are business methods that use less resources and time: human capital, financial investment, facilities, inventories, manufacturing, product development, parts supply and customer relations.During the 1970's and 80's, under the guidance of its group production manager, Taiichi Ohno, these concepts spread throughout Toyota's supplier network, distribution and sales operations. Today, Lean has become the single most effective improvement approach for companies of all sizes and throughout many industries and disciplines. In this Webinar we shall also cover a Lean transformation case study of a traditional Saudi company in Riyadh and learn what we can from its Lean journey. Art Smalley: Lean Stability Toyota’s Secret Ingredient
Many companies have attempted to replicate Toyota’s system and track record of results. However few have succeeded in the long run. One secret to Toyota’s success lies not in the present but back in the past when they started their improvement journey. Toyota was not always a successful company and lagged behind western competitors. This session will focus on the early days of the Toyota Production System in the 1950’s and how they got their journey started on the right track with high levels of Lean Stability in the 4M’s of manufacturing. Session Learning Objectives About Toyota’s early struggles What we all share in common with Toyota’s starting point How Toyota got off on a solid track How Stability is a key ingredient to Lean success Key Note Presenter BIO Art Smalley is an expert specializing in the area of world class methods for operational improvement and has served numerous companies around the world. In the latter part of the 1980’s Art was one of the first American’s to work for Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan first studying at different universities in Japan and then learning TPS manufacturing principles in the Kamigo engine plant where Taiichi Ohno was the founding plant manager. During his stay in Toyota Art played an instrumental role in the development and transfer of both TPS methods and precision equipment to Toyota’s overseas plants. After a decade in Japan, Art returned to the United States and served as Director of Lean Manufacturing for Donnelly Corporation a $1 billion tier one automotive parts supplier for five years. Donnelly Corporation executed one of the most impressive lean transformations in North American winning multiple awards while substantially improving net income as well as operational metrics in safety, quality, productivity, delivery, and morale. In 1998 Art subsequently joined the international management consulting firm of McKinsey & Company and was one of the firm’s leading experts in the area of lean manufacturing for a period of four years. During this time he counseled numerous Fortune 500 clients on operational matters involving lean implementation and oversaw specific cost, quality, and delivery improvement projects. In 2003 Art launched his own company Art of Lean, Inc. and now divides his time serving a diverse base of manufacturing clients such as Parker Hannifin, Delphi, Schlumberger, Gillette, Nexteer, Sandia National Laboratories and many other companies in areas of operational performance improvement. In addition Art serves as senior faculty member and periodic advisor to the Lean Enterprise Institute and its global affiliates delivering lectures to leading manufacturing executives around the world. Through the institute Art published the definitive workbook guide on implementing basic pull production methods entitled “Creating Level Pull” which was awarded a Shingo Prize for distinguished contribution to manufacturing knowledge in 2005. In 2006 Art was inducted as a lifetime member of the Shingo Prize for Excellence in recognition of his contributions to manufacturing. In 2008 Art also co-authored the Shingo Prize award winning book entitled “A3 Thinking” with his friend and colleague Professor Durward K. Sobek. In 2010 Art published "Toyota's Kaizen Method: Six Steps to Improvement" with Isao Kato. In his spare time Art enjoys woodworking, photography, playing golf, and reading books. University of Toyota; Lean Manufacturing Simulation
University of Toyota; Lean Manufacturing Simulation. Lean manufacturing or lean production, which is often known simply as "Lean", is a production practice that considers the expenditure of resources for any goal other than the creation of value for the end customer to be wasteful, and thus a target for elimination. In a more basic term, More value with less work. Lean manufacturing is a generic process management philosophy derived mostly from the Toyota Production System (TPS) (hence the term Toyotism is also prevalent) and identified as "Lean" only in the 1990s[1]. It is renowned for its focus on reduction of the original Toyota seven wastes in order to improve overall customer value, but there are varying perspectives on how this is best achieved. The steady growth of Toyota, from a small company to the world's largest automaker,[2] has focused attention on how it has achieved this.

OEM Lean101 - Principles of Lean Thinking online course.
Go to www.Lean101.ca to take advantage of a Yellow or Green Belt in Lean Thinking. The Liker Leadership Institute provides global online training programs based on a collaboration between Toyota Way author Jeffrey Liker (CEO) and Senior Lean Advisor George Trachilis (President). The Institute provides high quality courses that follow a learning by doing model in which the online experience is complemented by activities at the gemba and lean coaches. George created a book, OEM Principles of Lean Thinking, and an accompanying on-line course, with input from Jeff Liker, Mike Hoseus, co-author of Toyota Culture, and Norman Bodek, author of the Harada Method. This book and course preceded the formation of the Institute and has been taken by thousands of students consistently getting almost perfect scores in student evaluations. Regardless of your lean journey, and where you are in that journey, this book and this course are invaluable in stating for everyone in the company the expected behavior that needs to exist for this kind of change to take hold. It all starts with the basics (principles) and makes the connection on how to implement these principles regardless of the industry that you find yourself in today. This course complements the more recently developed online course, The Toyota Way to Lean Leadership, based on the book of that name by Jeffrey Liker and Gary Convis. In some cases students interested in the lean leadership course benefit from a refresher on the basics of lean and treat this as a prerequisite to the leadership course. Others have taken the course as a standalone introduction to lean thinking and methodology. The Principles of Lean Thinking provides an overview organized around the 5 Principles of Lean Thinking from the book by James Womack and Dan Jones: Define Value from the customer's perspective, Identify the Value Stream, Make the Process Flow, Pull from the customer, and Strive for Perfection. Throughout the course you will learn more deeply through exercises, case examples, quizzes, and actual projects in your workplace under the guidance of talented lean coaches. We have the coaching expertise and resources to cover the globe and many spoken languages so that our students have all of the opportunity to learn from the best.
