What is Lean Process and Product Development ( LPPD)?

02:43
In this pithy animation and description, author and former product development executive Jim Morgan explains what an LPPD system is and how it consistently delivers profitable value streams and great products that customers love. After you watch it, make plans for you and your team to join early adopters of LPPD from industrial and service companies at the 2nd annual Designing the Future Summit, June 27- 28, 2019, in Traverse City, MI: https://www.lean.org/designfuture2019 MI: https://www.lean.org/designfuture2019 Like last year’s inaugural conference, the 2019 summit will go beyond broad generalizations “to be innovative” and dig into concrete LPPD practices that are creating new products and services with speed, precision, and exceptional quality. Plenary speakers include: • Tyler Schilling, president of TechnipFMC Schilling Robotics, and Andy Houk, vice president of product development; • Frank Paluch, executive vice president of Honda’s North American manufacturing operation, who spent five years as president of Honda’s R&D facilities in North America; • David Crawley, a founder of startup Ubiquity Robotics and former head of strategic initiatives at Cypress semiconductor; • Susan DeSandre, a former senior executive at Apple and Ford. • Steve Shoemaker, general manager of engineering for Caterpillar’s Earthmoving Division; • Andi Plantenberg, principle, FutureTight and a mentor to Silicon Valley startups, will give you the trade-craft for knowing when it’s time to kill an idea – and when to keep it going for a prosperous future. • Jim Morgan, senior advisor and founder of Lean Product and Process Development at the nonprofit Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI) and co-author of Designing the Future, and The Toyota Product Development System will explain why product development is a natural and powerful leverage point for transforming the entire organization. Previously, he was a global engineering director at Ford during the product-led revitalization under CEO, Alan Mulally. • Jim Womack, LEI’s founding CEO, co-author of Lean Thinking and Machine That Changed the World, and author of Gemba Walks, will explore “Re-Thinking Value Creation in Product and Process Development” for a world in which customers often seek a solution to a complex problem involving many products rather than a single product. Breakout sessions and workshops include: • Giving Users a Voice in UX Design; • Industry Revolution Pulled by Lean Product and Process Development; • Managing Product Development in Healthcare with Visual Management (Obeya); • Set-Based Concurrent Engineering; • Visible Knowledge; • Craft Beer Game: Leading the Innovation Pipeline; • How to Develop New Value with the A3 Process; • Lean Process Creation: Why Developing a Product that Customers Actually; Want Requires a Great Process to Produce and Deliver It. The new paradigms of product development | Günther Schuh | TEDxRWTHAachen

25:43
Times are changing rapidly in product innovation and development. In order to cope with the challenges, companies must face the shortcomings of their traditional processes and embrace the ongoing paradigm shift. This includes some possibly uncomfortable but necessary adjustments, but to Günther Schuh, the benefits are clear. Günther Schuh is a professor for production engineering at RWTH Aachen University and member of several different directorial boards such as the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering and the Fraunhofer Institute of Production Technology. His research covers a wide range of aspects of modern industrial engineering, from production and innovation management to business development for manufacturing companies and factory planning. With a strong commitment to real life industrial challenges and as a founder of both StreetScooter and e.GO Mobile, two electric car manufacturers initiated at RWTH Aachen, he makes a stand for the Aachen academic landscape as a breeding soil for product and process innovation. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

7 steps to create a new product

02:50
Hi, my name is Jonathan Globerson. I'm a professional industrial designer. I'm also the CEO of GloberDesign, a product development company located in North Miami Beach in Florida. I want to tell you about the simple steps that you need to take in order to launch a new product into the market. The first thing to do is research. Do your research really good: locate your market; look who is your competition; how much are they selling their product for; what are their features; do they have any patents on it. Then you'll also do an additional patent search. That can either be done by yourself, or by a hired professional attorney or any other firm that can help you do that. Next, simply take a pen and paper and start sketching. Even if you're not the best sketcher in the world, it's fine; all you need to do is put your idea onto paper. Next, you need to create a 3D computer model. The way to do that is either hire a 3d computer artist or a 3D CAD draftsman and have them convert your beautiful sketch into a real 3D model. What they do with that? You can do with that various things. The first thing you can do with that is you can create a prototype. A prototype is the first sample of the actual product that you're having in mind. We can do it with various ways. Today we have 3D printers - they actually read a 3D computer model and they convert that into plastic parts that could be used and shown physically. The other thing that you can do with your 3D model is create patent drawings. These patent drawings you can apply for what's called a Provisional Application. That gives you 12 months of patent pending status. That's just enough time for you to start to pitch your investors, talk to buyers, talk to factories, and find out more details on how you can actually make your product come true. With the 3d computer model you also send that out to a factory, have them first sign for you what's called a Non-Disclosure Agreement, meaning anything that... information they receive, they keep it as a secret. With that you'll get real manufacturing pricing and then you can make your own business plan. So, now you know your manufacturing pricing, you can figure out what's going to wholesale for, and what is going to be the retail price. Last, start making some marketing materials. Taking Lean Principles to New Product Development

08:01
After successfully implementing lean principals in manufacturing, Solar Turbines took them to new product development, reducing firefighting and boosting development velocity. LEI’s Chet Marchwinski recently talked about the effort with Howard Kinkade, manager, products management, at Solar. Q: What was the business problem Solar Turbines was addressing with lean product and process development (LPPD) principles? Howard: Like many organizations, our lean journey started in manufacturing. A little over 10 years ago, I was working in the product development group under a new director. He had recognized that our new product introduction process was excellent and produced great results, but every once in a while, it fell short in some areas, maybe with schedule, maybe with some of our expenditures, cost management, things of that nature. He asked, “Do we want to continue to expand our NPI book and make it any thicker?” We found as the book got thicker, performance didn't necessarily improve. He read Lean Product and Process Development. He also read The Toyota Product Development System. Of course, I had homework. I had to do the same reading. We then reflected and asked ourselves, “Do we want to experiment with this?” I certainly said, “Yes.” It was pretty exciting for me. Our initial focus was on velocity. It was pretty simple. We didn't take too big of a bite. We focused on velocity. We connected value-stream mapping of recent development programs and started applying tools like obeya and front-loading. The simple applications of those tools yielded great results. For example, our typical engine enhancement program might be two years from development to test. We applied these tools to the next engine enhancement program and it accelerated from two years to 17-to-18 months. Q: One of the most successful experiments was in workflow management to level the work and improve the value-stream flow. What did the team do? What were those results? Howard: We had been on the journey for probably about eight, 10 years and something kept coming up in all of our workshops. We had problems with our workflow management. It showed up in value-stream maps -- and I think many of the people out there have played with this -- it showed up as waiting. Our flows weren't synchronized. We borrowed from a trick that manufacturing uses called kanban -- a pull system. We identified that in order for us to get better and enable more lean activities, we needed to get our workflow management under control. We applied kanban in a pull system to the workplace. Great results so far. Chet: Can you tell us about an experiment that didn't go so well and, more importantly, what you learned? Howard: I can think of one right now that we struggled with a long time. In our workflow management system -- and I always ask this question -- if you prioritize half the work, how much work have you prioritized? Some people say none of it, and that's what I used to say. Someone gave me a witty answer once and said, “You’ve prioritized half of it, but the lower half.” Our goal was to create a prioritization system where we didn't prioritize part of the work. We prioritized all the work. It didn't matter what it was; we'd be able to prioritize across the different types of work. Our prioritization system had to be quite extensive to deal with lots of different business needs. We kept finding that one problem was our training. When we put training efforts into the prioritization system, they were always at the bottom. We kept playing with the algorithm, but every time we changed the algorithm, we’d create some other problems. Then we finally took a step back and said, “We're doing training wrong. We know training is healthy for business, and we need to invest in it. Let's determine what percentage of our investment should always go to training.” We set aside a training bucket, and we allow each of the managers to spend that portion of it that's theirs to develop their tools, processes, and people. They can go ahead and create cards for training and pull the amount as long as they don't exceed the budget. This allows them to manage the development of their people, and it solved one of our biggest problems in prioritization. New Product Development Strategies: Lead Users - Strategy Saturdays

10:42
I discuss the importance of users in new product development strategy. We often think of new product development in terms of a very linear process. However, this is not really the case. Instead, new product development occurs through a trial and error process with getting feedback from users. You first get some insight from users, then you develop a rough prototype, and then you keep iterating based on how the users react to this prototype. Why is this important to new product development strategy? What you’re trying to do is capture both your idea and see how you can get it to fit within the constraints of the market. From my perspective, this makes it is important for the new product development process to: 1. To go slow and reduce the amount of debt you take in a business. 2. Have slack resources to continuously iterate beyond your initial prototype. 3. Find the right audience for your product. 4. Relentlessly push forward until the new product fits with the market.
