About the Presentation Today, almost every industry is being disrupted by the emergence of “intelligent software.” While software was once used simply to improve efficiency and workflow, now more and more businesses are demanding that software help them make smarter, more data-driven decisions. Perhaps surprisingly, this is even true in sales—especially in the high-technology sector. Modern technology sales teams demand software that offers a competitive edge in an increasingly complex and globalized world. In this webinar, SDM fellow Bryan Pirtle, chief technology officer of Nova.ai, a sales technology startup, will: provide an overview of the current technology sales ecosystem; explain how his team successfully built an artificial intelligence (AI) product for the contemporary technology sales organization; and explore how the trend toward smarter software and AI products is changing the way people buy and sell. About the Speaker Bryan Pirtle started his career as a consultant building dynamic e-commerce websites and consumer electronics, then he worked in the wine industry on big data and real-time control systems. He is now a co-founder and the chief technology officer of a sales technology startup, Nova.ai. Nova is a Y Combinator alumnus of the winter 2016 class and has just been accepted into the Salesforce.com incubator to accelerate its growth over the course of the six-month program. The Best Pricing Strategy - The Apple Way

Setting the right price for a product or a service can be very challenging especially for new entrepreneurs. This is because it can be quite confusing to understand how pricing really works in the market. For example, which of these two products would you buy, the first one is priced at $800 and the second product with the same functions and usage is priced only at $4? Obviously, most of us would choose the $4 product, right? Yes and no. It all depends on 2 important factors which I am going to explain more in this video. If you say yes then why is it that a 256GB iPhone 7 which is priced at $849 is more in demand than a Freedom 251 smartphone which is priced only at $4 a piece? If you say no then why is it that most of us would choose to get a $1 mineral water than the one that is priced at $200 a bottle? So how much should you price your product then? Well, there’s no one right answer to this question because there are so many things that you need to consider such as your overall business goals, how you plan to position your product in the market, your market niche, the costs to produce your products, your product category, and your overall operational costs, just to name a few. Is there a simpler way to do this? Of course, there is, just make sure you know your product category and your positioning strategy. Let me explain. Basically, your product will fall into either one of these two big categories. One is a generic product which can be divided into convenience and shopping products. Convenience products refer to our day to day products such as food, drinks, household products, and so forth whereas shopping products refer to products like clothing, shoes, furniture, and electrical appliances. The second product category is specialty products such as exclusive clothing lines, luxury cars, branded items such as branded bags, watches, shoes, and perfumes. If it is categorised as a generic product just use cost plus profit pricing strategy. Which means, you set your price by adding up the total costs to produce one unit plus the profit you want to make for every product sold. This usually works just fine because almost all generic products are priced this way. But if your product is a specialty product, you need to decide on how you want to position it in the market, more specifically how do you want to position it in the mind of your customers and you can set whatever price you want. The most important thing that you must remember here is this, the moment you enter the market with your product positioning and pricing strategy, it will stay in there forever and, to reposition it later on in the future is almost impossible. For example, Freedom 251 smartphone is positioned as the cheapest and most affordable smartphone in the world and to reposition it just like an iPhone is near to impossible task. Therefore, how should you price your products and services? And these 2 secrets are… 1) Sales Velocity 2) Conversions These are the 2 key factors the Amazon algorithm uses when choosing which products will sit at the top of their search results (the search engine accounts for 90% of sales on Amazon). Here is what you need to do to launch your first Amazon FBA product and make it a home-run success (even if it’s your first product): You need to match (or ideally improve on) the sales velocity & conversions of your top competitor for 2 weeks. If you do this… then your item will soar to the top of the search results - and YOU’LL start making all of the organic sales for your product! Hack #1 to launch your first Amazon FBA private label product & make initial sales: Use product giveaways Product giveaways for your Amazon FBA private label product are one of the most powerful strategies at your disposal for massively increasing your sales velocity & conversions. You can’t give products away for free but you can give people a heavily discounted coupon that lets them buy it for just 99 cents, which means you are basically giving it away for free. If your product is already ranked in the top few results and you want to climb to the top, this strategy alone can be enough. Hack #3 to launch your first Amazon FBA private label product & make initial sales: Use SuperURLs When someone clicks on your product listing after finding it using the Amazon search engine, they enter using a SuperURL: It’s a URL containing tracking information that tells the Amazon algorithm that they arrived at your listing through finding it using the search engine. You can give people this URL instead of your usual product URL to trick the algorithm into thinking that people found (and bought your item) through finding it using the search engine. Be aware though, this is a controversial method. Experts like Daniel recommend only pushing through a maximum of 20% of your sales this way. Hack #4 to launch your first Amazon FBA private label product & make initial sales: Use paid advertising You can place paid ads in the Amazon search engine for your item, targeting specific keywords. When someone buys a product through clicking on it, not only will this increase your sales velocity - but it’ll help your product rank organically for that keyword as well. Hack #5 to launch your first Amazon FBA private label product & make initial sales: Increase the conversions on your listing & get reviews It’s not enough to get the initial sales & conversions from drastically lowering your price: You need to have a high-converting listing so that when you reach the top of the search results you’ll keep making more sales than your competitor, otherwise the Amazon algorithm will drop you in the results. Here are some tips for increasing your conversions on your listing: * Have the maximum number of HD photos that are big enough the customer can zoom in on them. * Have a keyword rich product title. * Have multiple bullet points with excellent copy. * Have a descriptive product description that has photos included in it. If you do this, you can increase the rate of people leaving a review to as high as 10-15% (compared to less than 5%). Peter is a long-standing SIG Champion of the Future Devices SIG, and has conceived and delivered many innovative and successful events along with his fellow co-champions. Find out on this countdown of epic business blunders! #9. “Kodak”- The Eastman Kodak Company was founded in 1888 and was the most successful company in the photography industry during the 20th Century. They were the leaders in bringing the cutting edge of photographic technology and easy to use cameras to the hands of consumers throughout the world. But Kodak almost met its demise at the hands of a product that it actually invented: digital photography. Kodak invented this technology in 1975, but failed to jump on the innovation, believing that common applications for it were well into the future. Early on, the company thought that the high cost and complexity that would be needed to make a push into the digital front weren’t in Kodak’s best interests. So, Kodak put digital photography to the side to be picked back up when the time was financially advantageous, but they waited too long. By the time they switched gears, they faced competitors who had been perfecting their business models with digital photography at the center, whereas Kodak’s model was still dependent on printed photos. While other companies made deals with websites, phone companies and focused on online based imaging, Kodak floundered and in 2012 filed for Bankruptcy. They have since come back from bankruptcy and started specializing in producing smartphones and tablets. #8. “Pan American”- From 1927 until 1991, Pan Am was the largest airline company in the United States, but due to bad foresight, callous labor practices and an uncontrollable disaster this global giant quickly met its end. The company basically had a monopoly on overseas travel until World War II but was dealt its first major blow when other strong airline companies began to up their game. Pan Am fought off the competitors with its innovations such as jumbo jets and an advanced system for making reservations but these innovations couldn’t match the corporate aptitude and human relations that the other airlines dealt with more astutely. One of the main reasons for Pan Am’s failure was ironically due to its early successes. Because of the sheer size of its fleet, it was the company hit the hardest by the 1973 oil crisis. Just before the crisis, Pan Am had just purchased a number of brand new gas-guzzling Boeing 747s and was forced to dramatically raise ticket prices to recuperate. As it was trying to recover from this setback it had also become a target of terrorism in the Middle East. To the terrorists Pan Am was a symbol of the United States overseas because it was the largest U.S. airline servicing the area. During the Gulf War, in the midst of financial hardships and battles with labor unions, Pan American 103 on a transatlantic flight from Frankfurt, Germany to Detroit was blown up by Libyan nationals above the Scottish town of Lockerbie. The incident scared even more customers away from flying Pan Am and many travel agents would no longer book flights on their planes. All of these events and poor managing of them led Pan American International Airways to declare bankruptcy and completely fold in 1991. #7. “Borders”- Tom and Louis Borders opened their first bookstore in 1971. Their vast selection of books and innovative inventory system turned them into the second biggest chain of book megastores. Due to years of miscalculating the future of book consumption, the bookstore all but vanished in 2011. It all started in the mid 90s when Amazon and other online stores hit the scene. Instead of developing their own website and focusing on online sales, the company decided to further their storefront endeavors and expanded into Europe and Asia opening hundreds of stores. Their competitor Barnes and Noble, did the opposite by preparing for the digital age, perfecting their online sales system and focusing on their storefront operations in the United States. When Borders did start to catch on to the online market they were already far behind and decided to use Amazon as a host for such sales. Because of this, as more and more sales were made online, instead of receiving 100% of the profit they had to share with Amazon. Borders also was caught in the past by devoting lots of money and inventory towards DVDs and CDs at a time when digital music and video was on the rise. While Barnes and Noble developed it’s own e-reader to grab paperless book market by the horns, Borders was extremely slow to adapt to the change. All of these factors came to a boiling point in 2006 when, after several years of losing millions of dollars Borders filed for bankruptcy. By 2011, Borders realized there was no way out and closed most of its remaining stores. The only stores remaining are in southeast asia where it remain Borders in name only, as they were sold to a company named Popular Holdings.
