Oracle SQL Tuning - How to Read Execution Plans (Explain Plan)

13:39
In this free tutorial you will learn how to generate and read (interpret) an execution plan in Oracle Databases. See more FREE Oracle Tuning tutorials at http://skillbuilders.com/free-oracle-tutorials. Understanding what the Oracle Database does with your SQL is essential to tuning - and the execution plan is the key. Oracle Certified Master DBA John Watson will provide a brief introduction (4 minutes) - which includes John's tuning methodology, then demonstrate EXPLAIN PLAN, SQL*Plus AUTOTRACE and DBMS_XPLAN.DISPLAY_CURSOR. In the tutorial, John will teach you: - How to read an execution plan - Find the 1st step in the plan - Decipher the order of the steps in the plan - That EXPLAIN PLAN can be very misleading Prerequisites: To get the most from this tutorial, you should: 1 Know how to code SQL 2 Be familiar with SQL*Plus 3 Know - in very general terms - what an execution plan is. 4 Have a basic understanding of the Library Cache (this is where Oracle Database stores parsed SQL statements) 5 Have a basic understanding of the Cost Based Optimizer (this is the part of the database that parses your SQL, creates an execution plan. Hopefully the correct - most efficient - plan).

Solving Performance Problems on Oracle DB

28:11
Solving Performance Problems on Oracle DB Matthew Vegh - Embarcadero Thursday, June 26, 2014 - 11am DBAs and database developers regularly spend a lot of time tracking down and resolving performance issues on the database servers they are responsible for; it can be very difficult, frustrating, and expensive. Given the complex interactions of applications, users and databases, new performance issues can arise almost as fast as old ones can be addressed. This session will simulate common performance problems on an Oracle server and then both identify those problems and provide effective solutions. Matthew Vegh is a Software Architect at Embarcadero Technologies for the Embarcadero DB Power Studio family of products and has been with the company for the better part of a decade. He has over 15 years of development experience with a wide range of technologies and a definite preference for database tooling.

Analyzing and Troubleshooting Oracle Parallel Execution

01:58:45
Presented by Randolf Geist 8th May 2013 Oracle parallel execution, a feature of the Enterprise Edition, allows you to automatically distribute the processing of a SQL statement execution among multiple worker processes. This requires additional effort when analysing and troubleshooting such parallel executions, since it adds complexity that is simply not there with normal serial execution where only a single process is involved. In this webinar, Randolf Geist, provides an overview of what these additional challenges are and how these can be approached. Oracle SQL Monitoring - Performance Analysis

01:30:41
SQL Monitoring is the best new feature of Oracle 11g for performance analysts, developers and support teams. Finally there is a tool that provides the most accurate, useful and interesting information when a SQL statement is running for longer than expected in a clear format with no minimal advance configuration requirements: What execution plan is really being used? What row source cardinality calculations are incorrect? What steps in the plan are taking the most time and consuming most resources? In this presentation, Doug Burns will demonstrate the various ways of accessing SQL Monitoring functionality and use example reports to show how the information can be used to analyse both currently running and completed statements. It will also describe and offer solutions to some of the minor quirks you might encounter. Identifying Long Running Queries

01:10:08
Tuning the performance of your queries in SQL Server can be a lot of work. However, in order for your systems to receive the full benefits of query tuning, you must tune the queries that need it the most. This session will show you three different methods for determining which of the queries on your system are being called the most frequently, take the longest period of time to run, or are using the most resources. You'll be able to use the information in this session to quickly set up your own metrics gathering processes in order to understand what is happening on your systems and which queries will benefit most from tuning. Grant Fritchey is a SQL Server MVP with over 20 years’ experience in IT including time spent in support and development. Grant has worked with SQL Server since version 6.0 back in 1995. He has developed in VB, VB.Net, C# and Java. Grant has authored books for Apress and Simple-Talk, and joined Red Gate as a Product Evangelist in January 2011. Query Execution Plans

06:56
SQL Server Unlocked Series- Query Execution Plans In this video, we will be discussing query execution plans and how to use them properly. In this video, Morelan starts out with an analogy relating SQL Server to your kid. I know this sounds pretty far-fetched, but he has a point, so give it a chance. He goes on to describe how you want SQL Server to perform to the best of its ability, same as you would want your kids to do, hence why we use query execution plans. Additionally, If you lose something such as your keys, you probably want a tool that shows you how to find that item, if you set up your SQL server right, this is just the tool- not to find the keys but to find data. All-in-all SQL server can save you time if you use it right and you know how to use it right. This mini-series is a good starter on how to do so. Have a look at the video, and if you want to learn more, take our class Developer 2012 Volume 3 Video 9.1. What happens when a query is issued to SQL Server 2. How to check what is in SQL Server plan cache 3. Things to consider to promote query plan reusability What happens when a query is issued to SQL Server In SQl Server, every query requires a query plan before it is executed. When you run a query the first time, the query gets compiled and a query plan is generated. This query plan is then saved in sql server query plan cache. Next time when we run the same query, the cached query plan is reused. This means sql server does not have to create the plan again for that same query. So reusing a query plan can increase the performance. How long the query plan stays in the plan cache depends on how often the plan is reused besides other factors. The more often the plan is reused the longer it stays in the plan cache. How to check what is in SQL Server plan cache SELECT cp.usecounts, cp.cacheobjtype, cp.objtype, st.text, qp.query_plan FROM sys.dm_exec_cached_plans AS cp CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_sql_text(plan_handle) AS st CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_query_plan(plan_handle) AS qp ORDER BY cp.usecounts DESC As you can see we have sorted the result set by usecounts column in descending order, so we can see the most frequently reused query plans on the top. usecounts - Number of times the plan is reused objtype - Specifies the type of object text - Text of the SQL query query_plan - Query execution plan in XML format To remove all elements from the plan cache use the following command DBCC FREEPROCCACHE In older versions of SQL Server up to SQL Server 6.5 only stored procedure plans are cached. The query plans for Adhoc sql statements or dynamic sql statements are not cached, so they get compiled every time. With SQL Server 7, and later versions the query plans for Adhoc sql statements and dynamic sql statements are also cached. Things to consider to promote query plan reusability For example, when we execute the following query the first time. The query is compiled, a plan is created and put in the cache. Select * From Employees Where FirstName = 'Mark' When we execute the same query again, it looks up the plan cache, and if a plan is available, it reuses the existing plan instead of creating the plan again which can improve the performance of the query. However, one important thing to keep in mind is that, the cache lookup is by a hash value computed from the query text. If the query text changes even slightly, sql server will not be able to reuse the existing plan. For example, even if you include an extra space somewhere in the query or you change the case, the query text hash will not match, and sql server will not be able find the plan in cache and ends up compiling the query again and creating a new plan. Another example : If you want the same query to find an employee whose FirstName is Steve instead of Mark. You would issue the following query Select * From Employees Where FirstName = 'Steve' Even in this case, since the query text has changed the hash will not match, and sql server will not be able find the plan in cache and ends up compiling the query again and creating a new plan. This is why, it is very important to use parameterised queries for sql server to be able to reuse cached query plans. With parameterised queries, sql server will not treat parameter values as part of the query text. So when you change the parameters values, sql server can still reuse the cached query plan. The following query uses parameters. So even if you change parameter values, the same query plan is reused. Declare @FirstName nvarchar(50) Set @FirstName = 'Steve' Execute sp_executesql N'Select * from Employees where [email protected]', N'@FN nvarchar(50)', @FirstName One important thing to keep in mind is that, when you have dynamic sql in a stored procedure, the query plan for the stored procedure does not include the dynamic SQL. The block of dynamic SQL has a query plan of its own. Summary: Never ever concatenate user input values with strings to build dynamic sql statements. Always use parameterised queries which not only promotes cached query plans reuse but also prevent sql injection attacks.

How to Code Oracle Analytic Functions

52:40
Many more free Oracle Database and SQL tutorials at http://skillbuilders.com/free-oracle-tutorials. SQL is a language that allows you to perform queries to answer a wide range of questions about your data. While standard SQL is quite powerful, there are many questions that it cannot answer at all or that it can only answer with complex and inefficient SQL workarounds. Questions about running totals, percent of total, and ranking within a group fall into this area. Also, more complex issues such as Top-N within a group and aggregates over a range also fall in this arena. These questions can be easily answered via a new class of SQL statements called Analytic Functions. This presentation will show you how to use Oracle's Analytic Function extensions to SQL to answer these questions simply and efficiently.
