Life - Weedy seadragons dance into the night - BBC One
SUBSCRIBE for more BBC highlights: https://bit.ly/2IXqEIn WATCH full programmes on BBC iPlayer https://bbc.in/2J18jYJ About the programme: http://www.bbc.co.uk/life These two could teach Strictly Come Dancing a thing or two. Named for their uncanny resemblance to the plant life around them, a male weedy seadragon seduces a female with some very fancy fin work. Two months later, however, its the male whos left carrying the eggs Living off the coast of south Australia, weedy seadragons (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus) are the only known species along with sea horses and pipefish - where the male carries the eggs. Although the eggs start out in the female, she lays about 120 of them onto the tail of the male where they are then fertilized and develop until they hatch. Feeding on plankton, larval fishes and small shrimp-like crustaceans, seadragons resemble swaying seaweed making them difficult to find in their natural habitats, even though they can grow to about 46 cm in length.

Weedy Seadragon mating (egg exchange.)
Up until now the actual egg exchange between Weedy Sea Dragons has never been observed in the wild. This footage was taken at Flinders Jetty Australia January 2017. Surprisingly the couple where doing their thing right under the Jetty and in the pathway where dozens of divers usually venture past on weekends. At this particular moment in less than 2 metres of water and only 30 meters from shore I managed to record the scene . Once again it was all about being in the right place at the right time. Diving with Weedy Sea Dragons, Tasmania, Australia
Diving with the amazing Weedy Sea Dragons (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus) off the Tasman Peninsula, Tasmania, as featured on the BBC "Oceans" episode "Southern Ocean". Related to seahorses, Weedy Seadragons are only found in southern Australia - the largest and most colourful animals are found in southern Tasmania. They live amongst kelp and other seaweeds, and feed on small crustaceans such as mysids which they suck up individually using their tube-like snout. Like seahorses, the male carries the eggs until they hatch. Filmed by Mick Baron. All footage and images in this video are © Michael Baron, Eaglehawk Dive Centre, all rights reserved. First footage of a living ruby sea dragon settled a big mystery
In 2015, scientists at Scripps Oceanography stunned the oceanography community by announcing a new species of sea dragon, colloquially known as the ruby sea dragon. Then, in 2016, they spotted a live ruby sea dragon in the wild for the first time. Now, the team has released that rare footage, which reveals something peculiar: the rub sea dragon is missing those iconic leafy appendages found on the only other two species of sea dragon know to exist. Weedy & Leafy Sea Dragons
This is a short video composed of leafy and weedy sea dragon pictures and a video of mine. :) The song is "On the Banks of a Dream" from the Chrono Cross OST. (Also - This is the first video I've made and I don't have the greatest video-making software, so please excuse the quality!) I am uploading this second version to see whether there is any improvement in picture quality. I have no idea why it ended up so poor. :/ (more)
