Medieval Spanish ghost town becomes self-sufficient ecovillage

13:01
It's a utopian fantasy- discover a ghost town and rebuild it in line with your ideals-, but in Spain where there are nearly 3000 abandoned villages (most dating back to the Middle Ages), some big dreamers have spent the past 3 decades doing just that. There are now a few dozen "ecoaldeas" - ecovillages - in Spain, most build from the ashes of former Medieval towns. One of the first towns to be rediscovered was a tiny hamlet in the mountains of northern Navarra. Lakabe was rediscovered in 1980 by a group of people living nearby who had lost their goats and "when they found their goats, they found Lakabe", explains Mauge Cañada, one of the early pioneers in the repopulation of the town. The new inhabitants were all urbanites with no knowledge of country life so no one expected them to stay long. When they first began to rebuild, there was no road up to the town so horses were used to carry construction materials up the mountain. There was no electricity either so they lived with candles and oil lamps. In the early years, they generated income by selling some of their harvest and working odd jobs like using their newfound construction experience to rebuild roofs outside town. Later they rebuilt the village bakery and sold bread to the outside world. Their organic sourdough breads now sell so well that today they can get by without looking for work outside town, but it helps that they keep their costs at a minimum as a way of life. "There's an austerity that's part of the desire of people who come here," explains Mauge. "There's not a desire for consumption to consume. We try to live with what there is." Today, the town generates all its own energy with the windmill, solar panels and a water turbine. It also has a wait list of people who'd like to move in, but Mauge says the answer is not for people to join what they have created, but to try to emulate them somewhere else. "If you set your mind to it and there's a group of people who want to do it, physically they can do it, economically they can do it. What right now is more difficult is being willing to suffer hardship or difficulties or... these days people have a lot of trouble living in situations of shortage or what is seen as shortage but it isn't." Spanish caveman becomes geneticists blue-eyed boy

02:01
Spanish researchers have unearthed surprising new evidence about what ancient Europeans looked like. Genetic tests carried out on the remains of a caveman who lived around 7,000 years ago have revealed a mix of European and African traits, with dark skin and hair and blue eyes. The human remains were found along with another skeleton belonging to two men in their early 30's. They had been extremely well preserved in a deep cave in the Cantabrian Moutains in northwestern Spain. "It's a combination of features that no longer exists in Europe today. From a genome point of view, this man was European, but he had darker skin than current Europeans, combined with blue eyes," says Professor Carles Lalueza-Fox, researcher at the CSIC (Spanish National Research Council) in Barcelona. One explanation could be that the lighter skin colour evolved much later than was previously assumed. Another result of the DNA study reveals this hunter-gatherer was probably lactose intolerant and had more difficulty digesting starchy foods than the farmer who transformed diets and lifestyles. "From now on we're going to be able to reconstruct the genetic prehistory of Europe with unprecedented detail. In the coming years, we will very probably see many more genomes dating back to the Paleolithic, the Neolithic, the Bronze Age, the Copper Age, etc," says Professor Lalueza-Fox. Researchers hope to soon piece together the DNA of the other skeleton discovered in the cave. euronews knowledge brings you a fresh mix of the world's most interesting know-hows, directly from space and sci-tech experts. I heard you moved to Austin Got an apartment and settled down And every once in a while I start texting Write a paragraph But then I delete the message Think 'bout you like a past time I could cry you a river Get you baptised or I wasn't ready to act right Used to always think I'd get you back, right They say that things fall apart We were gonna move to Brooklyn You were gonna study Art Love is just a tool To remind us who we are And that we are not alone And we're walking in the dark I hope someday We'll sit down together And laugh with each other About these days, these days All our troubles We'll lay to rest And we'll wish we could come back to these days, these days We'll wish we could come back to these days, these days

The spanish cured Iberian ham from Extremadura

11:28
http://www.spanishtaste.com The best ham in the world, the Pata Negra, comes from the Iberian Pork. Although they are very precious, the small black pigs are not barricaded in buildings as livestock and shepherded all day, but rather live carefree and pasture in holm oak forests -- and of course eat acorns that give them that unique savour. When driving out of the city and entering the countryside or undertaking a walking tour, you will see herds of small black pigs. This breed is older than the European species and is accustomed to living outdoors. The Iberian pig lives in Extremadura in holm and cork oak forests and feeds on their fruits in what is an interaction between the 2,000-year-old natural resources of the country, namely the Dehesa and the Iberian pig. The Dehesa makes up more than one million hectares in Extremadura, and the western border region consists of half the whole Spanish Dehesa. A quarter of the total area the self-governed region is covered by holm and cork oak forests. Although the Dehesa looks like a virgin landscape it was generated by human action, for about 4,000 years ago Iberian tribes started clearing forest areas in the view today in Monfragüe's National Park, making way for extensive pasture farming. In the cleared areas they planted holms, whose fruit happened to be the perfect food for the pigs. The Dehesa represents an ecosystem that is unique worldwide, and this is not only because of its age. A study dating back to the 1980´s showed that in addition to holms oaks there are another 45 plant species such as bluebells and iris. The Dehesa is also the home of a dozen singing bird species like squills, bustards, little owls and storks Acorns and herbs that are the main nourishment of the Iberian pig guarantee the unique flavour and the superior quality of the Jamón ibérico. The ham of Extremadura is one of the best in the world and has won all the top awards. It is known as Pata Negra in Spain. Extremadura's government had the "Dehesa de Extremadura" trademarked by the European Union in order to control the high quality standards and to prevent it from being counterfeited. Of the best quality are the pigs that feed on acorns and herbs from the Dehesa and only live outdoors from October to April. Many visitors to Extremadura are willing to learn the Iberian way of breeding pigs in one of the villages around Jerez de los Caballeros in the southern outskirts of Extremadura. Big pig breeding industries are established there and you can see delectable legs of pork hanging even in Bodegas. You also see them dangling behind many of Zafra's butcher shop windows. The butchers are pleased to explain to guests all about pig breeding, to let them have a taste and give recipes. Actually, the Cerdo ibérico can be eaten not only with white bread but also in many different ways, for instance as Tapas, with salads and with fry-ups. Some restaurants propose "Vieiras con Jamón", which is wrapped, seared slices of ham. It is served with salad and Guadiana's red wine. A very good recipe for you to copy.

¡Ay Carmela! - Song of the Spanish Republican troops

02:42
One of the most famous Spanish republican songs from the Civil War. The most popular lyrics to this Republican song have two variants known as El Paso del Ebro and Viva la XV Brigada. The first one is related to the Battle of the Ebro and the second mentions the Battle of Jarama, two of the main confrontations of the Civil War. The melody, however, is a folk tune of far greater antiquity, dating back to the Peninsular War in the early 19th century. INSANELY DELICIOUS SPANISH FOOD 🇪🇸 Granada Spain Tour

12:33
I'll show you where to eat the best seafood (octopus & shrimp) in Granada with a wonderful view of the Alhambra 👍 THUMBS UP PLEASE! Subscribe to our channel: https://goo.gl/2OsFKV Check out yesterday's vlog: https://youtu.be/4Q7UqbUvzkE BECOME A PATRON: https://www.patreon.com/adrianapope FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Instagram: @yetAnotherVisaRun Facebook: @yetAnotherVisaRun Twitter: @anotherVisaRun In this video, I eat at authentic Spanish food at a restaurant called Mirador de San Nicolas in Granada Spain. This restaurant specializes in all things seafood. Definitely my kinda place! This restaurant is located right next to Mirador San Nicolas, which is the famous lookout point to see the magnificent Alhambra. The Alhambra is an ancient architectural site dating back to centuries, and the land itself where the palace stands dates back to 882 when the Romans were in Spain. The beautiful palace has since been restored to its former glory and can be seen throughout the entire city of Granada. The Mirador San Nicolas is a free spot to go to and always seems to have live performances such as flamenco dancers and Spanish guitarists. The hoards of artists and Granada hippies also contribute to the ultra mellow atmosphere. As we passed by this restaurant, we noticed their Spanish food looked exceptional! Their seafood looked extra fresh and the aroma coming out of the kitchen beckoned us to sit down. Nate and I decided to order a mix of dishes along with some wine and beer. We ordered the tortillitas de camarones which are shrimp fritters from the province of Cádiz in Andalusia, Spain. It is crispy on the outside and almost gooey on the inside. The flavor reminded me a lot of the Jewish dish, potato latkes. Upon my first bite, I believed these shrimp fritters to contain potatoes but this is not the case. The starchiness I was tasting was actually from the chickpea flour that is found in the batter. Some other ingredients include wheat flour, parsley, onions, salt, and pepper. The main flavor comes from the special tiny shrimp that are in the fritter. This special shrimp species, called Palaemon longirostris, are endemic to the Andalusia area. The verdict: we were greatly impressed. Spanish food has quickly become one of our top coveted cuisines! We also ordered pulpo a la Gallega which is boiled octopus tossed in olive oil and smothered in a thick coating of pimiento picante (spicy paprika). As far as Spanish food goes, this octopus recipe is my all time favorite dish. This dish is also known as polbo á feira which translates into fair-style octopus in the Galician language. This dish originated 125 years ago when muleteers would bring octopus to the cattle fairs, as a way to sustain themselves. They would boil the octopus in a copper caldron in order to curl the tips of the tentacles, and then immerse the octopus in olive oil and paprika. It is traditionally eaten on wooden plates (as seen in this video) although these wooden plates are becoming a rare sight. Pulpo a la Gallega is best eaten with some red wine to wash it down. The texture of this octopus was incredible. Similar to the concept of al dente pasta in which the pasta is dense and slightly chewy but not overcooked, the same culinary rule applies to boiling octopus. The trick to making exceptional pulpo a la Gallega is to to continuously dip the octopus into the boiling water (holding it by the head) and this will curl the tentacles. I really loved the flavor of this dish, it was so insanely delicious and I can't wait to go back here and eat this dish again. I really enjoyed the shrimp fritters as well, but I think my favorite dish out of the two would have to be the pulpo a la Gallega. Although Granada Spain is a very touristy city, it has a lot to offer. I promise you won’t be disappointed by the Spanish food in Granada if you eat at this restaurant and the other places we recommend in our vlogs. We try to pick the top places that locals frequent in order to give you the best tips on where to go and dine. Enjoy! SEAT 600 - 60th Anniversary Guinness World Record (Spanish)

02:49
SEAT has set a new Guinness World Record with the organisation of the largest gathering of 600s in its long and enduring history, dating back to its launch in 1957. 787 SEAT 600 (Nicknamed “pelotillas”) came together at Montmeló the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the closing ceremony of the SEAT 600's 60th anniversary celebrations. The proud SEAT 600 owners responded to the call to make this event a resounding success: with registration reaching maximum capacity in just 2 months, 774 owners taking part and more than 4,000 visitors coming along to enjoy the stirring tribute the Spanish manufacturer wanted to make for the car that put Spain on wheels and bring the 60th anniversary celebrations to an end in spectacular style, topped off, of course, with a well-deserved birthday cake. It was an impressive sight to see so many SEAT 600s gathered in one place and, as a result of fastidious care and attention from their owners, all in perfect working order, despite being a mass-marketed car that has been on the road for somewhere between 40 and 60 years. Addressing event attendees, SEAT Chairman, Luca de Meo, who collected the official Guinness World Record certificate from the organisation's adjudicator, said, "The 600 is a deeply-rooted part of Spain's history, a vehicle that provided the impetus for the country's motorisation during an important period of development. With its manufacture, SEAT became one of the cornerstones of Spanish industry, as it is today." The CEO of SEAT Spain, Mikel Palomera, also participated in the rally with his own 600, lining up alongside the many 'Seíta' (Baby Seat) owners and enthusiasts, such as the private SEAT 600 clubs. In his speech in which he thanked everyone for their involvement, he commented, "For the people of Spain, the 600 is the car that brought families and towns closer together and provided mobility for many who, for the first time ever, were now able to travel around at their leisure. I am here among friends and other enthusiasts with my own 600 to enjoy this great tribute to the car that put Spain on wheels." Without a doubt, the most anticipated and exciting part of the day, brought about thanks to all the participants, was the gathering of the 600s as they made their way out onto the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit, ending with and incredible family photograph. Both participants and attendees were able to enjoy a day of celebrations with shows and musical performances throughout the day, including entertainment from the Guateque Group among others, reflecting music both past and present. Refreshments were on hand to recover from the dancing and partying, with a wide variety of gastronomic delights served up by the ever superb food trucks. Other attractions included a motor and vintage product market, a playground for children and exhibitions that lined up the most emblematic classic models from the company's past alongside the current SEAT range. A wider, updated range following the launch of the Ateca, the Leon and the Ibiza, to which the Arona can now be added. And is ready to be one of the stars of the Frankfurt Motor Show, which gets underway next Tuesday. A fitting conclusion to the celebrations commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the SEAT 600, the car that provided the impetus for the motorisation of Spain and was thus responsible for uniting the families, towns and cities of a nation.

found gathering dust in tiny Spanish museum 'touched the lips of Jesus

00:59
Jewel-encrusted goblet found gathering dust in tiny Spanish museum 'touched the lips of Jesus and is in fact the HOLY GRAIL' say two historians with evidence to prove it It is a mystery dating back millennia. But apparently, the long-lost Holy Grail has finally been found - on display in a Spanish museum. The onyx chalice has been sat in the Basilica of San Isidoro in Leon, north Spain, for 1000 years - touted to visitors as a goblet belonging to 11th century Queen Urraca. But in fact, there is 'no doubt' it contains the cup which touched the lips of Jesus Christ, two historians claim. In an explosive book charting three years of 'scientific research', Margarita Torres and Jose Ortiza del Rio reveal there is conclusive evidence from scrolls in Egypt that confirm their theory. The onyx vessel made between 200 BC and 100 AD, they claim, is trapped inside a bejewelled medieval chalice. According to two medieval documents written in Arabic, it was stolen from Jerusalem by Muslims, who gave it to the Christian community in Egypt.

Medieval Spanish ghost town becomes self-sufficient ecovillage

00:50
What right now is more difficult is being willing to suffer hardship or difficulties or... these days people have a lot of trouble living in situations of shortage or what is seen as shortage but it isn't." Spanish Republican Song | ¡Ay Carmela!

The first one is related to the Battle of the Ebro and the second mentions the Battle of Jarama, two of the main confrontations of the Civil War. The melody, however, is a folk tune of far greater antiquity, dating back to the Peninsular War in the early 19th century.[2] The sentence Luchamos contra los moros (We fight against the Moors) refers to the Regulares, the feared Moroccan units fighting as the shock troops of the Nationalists. ==========REFERENCES========== ==========VIDEO========== Photos used/edited: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7d/Flag_of_the_Second_Spanish_Republic_%28military%29.svg/1280px-Flag_of_the_Second_Spanish_Republic_%28military%29.svg.png https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6f/Emblem_of_the_International_Brigades.svg/1180px-Emblem_of_the_International_Brigades.svg.png Lyrics and Info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C2%A1Ay_Carmela!_(song) https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_paso_del_Ebro https://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ay_Carmela_(%C5%9Fark%C4%B1) *URLs might change without further notice.

20. Pandemic Influenza

50:54
Epidemics in Western Society Since 1600 (HIST 234) Reliable records of influenza, dating back to the 1700s, suggest a pattern of one major pandemic every century. Among the pandemics for which there is solid documentary evidence, the outbreak of 1918-1920 is by far the greatest. The so-called Spanish Lady caused somewhere between 25 and 100 million deaths worldwide. It is distinctive both for its high mortality rate, in comparison to other flu pandemics, and for its unusual demographic effect: whereas the flu typically targets the very young and old, the 1918-1920 epidemic struck adults in the prime of life. Without a cure for the disease, public health authorities today are in a position to learn from the successes and failures of the early-twentieth-century response. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Joni Mitchell - Song for Sharon (1976) (Subtitulada Spanish)

08:45
Joni Mitchell Song for Sharon Hejira, 1976 Subtitulada Español/Spanish Subtítulos Letras Traducidas AllMusic Review by David Cleary Joni Mitchell's Hejira is the last in an astonishingly long run of top-notch studio albums dating back to her debut. Some vestiges of her old style remain here; "Song for Sharon" utilizes the static, pithy vocal harmonies from Ladies of the Canyon's "Woodstock," "Refuge of the Roads" features woodwind touches reminiscent of those in "Barangrill" from For the Roses, and "Coyote" is a fast guitar-strummed number that has precedents as far back as Clouds' "Chelsea Morning." But by and large, this release is the most overtly jazz-oriented of her career up to this point -- hip and cool, but never smug or icy. "Blue Motel Room" in particular is a prototypic slow jazz-club combo number, appropriately smooth, smoky, and languorous. "Coyote," "Black Crow," and the title track are by contrast energetically restless fast-tempo selections. The rest of the songs here cleverly explore variants on mid- to slow-tempo approaches. None of these cuts are traditionally tuneful in the manner of Mitchell's older folk efforts; the effect here is one of subtle rolls and ridges on a green meadow rather than the outgoing beauty of a flower garden. Mitchell's verses, many concerned with character portraits, are among the most polished of her career; the most striking of these studies are that of the decrepit Delta crooner of "Furry Sings the Blues" and the ambivalent speaker of "Song to Sharon," who has difficulty choosing between commitment and freedom. Arrangements are sparse, yet surprisingly varied, the most striking of which is the kaleidoscopically pointillistic one used on "Amelia." Performances are excellent, with special kudos reserved for Jaco Pastorius' melodic bass playing on "Refuge of the Roads" and the title cut. This excellent album is a rewarding listen.

Catalonia’s independence referendum explained | The Economist

Catalonia’s independence referendum is due to take place on October 1st, in clear defiance of the Spanish government. We outline why some Catalans want independence from Spain, and why only 41% are likely to vote yes Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.trib.al/rWl91R7 Tensions are rising in Catalonia. An independence referendum is planned for October 1st and if the majority vote Yes the Catalan government says it will declare independence from Spain. Raul Romeva is a member of the Catalan parliament, which favours independence. A parliament set on a collision course with the Spanish government. Xavier Albiol is the leader of the Catalan branch of Spain's ruling People's Party. His party fiercely opposes the referendum that has been deemed illegal by the Spanish constitutional court. Police have raided Catalan government offices, seized ballot papers, and arrested at least 12 officials in a bid to stop the vote. Catalonia has been part of Spain since the country first emerged as a unified kingdom in 1469. Famous for its spectacular human towers, a tradition dating back to the 18th century, Catalonia is one of Spain's wealthiest regions incorporating the tourist hub of Barcelona and a thriving manufacturing industry. The Lipizzans of Vienna's Spanish Riding School in Imperial Hofburg Palace, 4 September 2011

01:00
With their origins dating back to the 16th century, the Lipizzans are Europe's oldest breed of horses. However, until the 19th century these noble steeds were not known as "Lipizzans", a name that was taken from the Slovenian village of Lipica. Until that time they were called Spanish Karsters and highly prized. The Lipizzans of Vienna's Spanish Riding School have made the Piber Federal Stud, located in western Styria, their home since 1920. The stud carefully cultivates and develops the knowledge gained from over four hundred years of breeding these magnificent animals. The breeding at Piber can be traced back to the descendents of the former Lipizza Imperial Court Stud. Each year the best Lipizzan stallions are selected for training at the Spanish Riding School. At the height of their career, they enchant visitors from all over the world with their truly unique performances in the world's most famous riding hall, the "Winter Riding School", located in Vienna's Imperial Hofburg Palace. Hunting the Spanish Ibex Grand slam with Trophy Hunting Spain by Melcom Van Staden Productions

03:16
There are 4 species of Ibex to be hunted in Spain that form what is more commonly known by mountain hunters as "The Spanish Ibex Grand Slam" namely Beceite Ibex, Gredos Ibex, Ronda Ibex and the Sierra Nevada Ibex. A trip to Spain is a must for any traveller, let alone the hard core mountain hunters. This is a great family vacation opportunity with some great sightseeing, luxury lifestyle as well as everything old that Europe has to offer. Hunting heritage runs thick in Spain and besides all the more "touristy" attractions, some of the fabulous accommodations while hunting in Spain, especially with Trophy Hunting Spain, with all the hunting history dating back to former Kings of Spain, makes not only for a great stay, but also some great stories! While hunting with Bruno Rosich from Trophy Hunting Spain, and his main guide Oscar Colomina you can enjoy exquisite Spanish hospitality while being able to complete your Spanish Ibex Grand Slam all in one trip. They hunt some of the top areas in all of Spain and work with some of the best people in the industry to ensure you are successful in hunting The Spanish Ibex Grand Slam in fine fashion with some of the best trophy quality. Melcom Van Staden Productions, the Rooikop filmmaker is one of Africas premier filmmakers and videographers/cinematographers in the hunting and outdoor industry. I was blessed to be along for the ride and to successfully capture the entire Spanish Ibex Grand slam hunt. What a special moment to be able to capture two Gredos Ibex fighting full out with one getting a full swing at the other while fully outstretched standing upright on his hind legs. ©Melcom Van Staden Productions

☼ Lipizzaner Stallions in Schladming WM 2013

The horse of royalty, the world famous Lipizzaner Stallions have been delighting the audience at the Ski championships in Schladming 2013 (Spanish Riding School) With their origins dating back to the 16th century, the Lipizzans are Europe's oldest breed of horses. ► JAKE ☼
