Amazing Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate ! This food is a very popular means of increasing fertility. It contains very high levels of antioxidants that help fight general body pollutants and toxins that may interfere with any bodily functions, including fertility. The darker the chocolate, the better it is for male reproductive health. It is rich in an amino-acid called L-Arginine HCL, which is believed to double the sperm volume and density. Not only this, it is also said to enhance the blood vessel dilation, thereby increasing the blood flow in the reproductive parts. However, there must be a balance. Otherwise, there is a danger of putting on extra weight, which may again cause the testosterone hormone to behave badly and reduce the levels of sperm inside the body. A few dark chocolate squares a day is good enough. Powerful Source of Antioxidants ! Have you ever heard of a measure called ORAC ? ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. It is a measure of the antioxidant activity of foods. Basically, researchers pit a bunch of free radicals (bad) against a sample of food and see how well the antioxidants in the food can "disarm" them. The biological relevance of this metric is questioned, because it's done in a test tube and may not have the same effect in the body. However, I think it is worth mentioning that raw, unprocessed cocoa beans are among the highest scoring foods that have been tested. Improve Brain Function ! The good news isn't over yet. Dark chocolate may also improve the function of the brain. One study of healthy volunteers showed that 5 days of consuming high-flavanol cocoa improved blood flow to the brain. Cocoa may also significantly improve cognitive function in elderly people with mental impairment. It also improves verbal fluency and several risk factors for disease. ocoa also contains stimulant substances like caffeine and theobromine, which may be a key reason cocoa can improve brain function in the short term. Cardiovascular Disease ! The compounds in dark chocolate appear to be highly protective against the oxidation of LDL. In the long term, this should cause much less cholesterol to lodge in the arteries and we should see a lower risk of heart disease over the long term. It turns out that we have several long-term observational studies that show a fairly drastic improvement. In a study of 470 elderly men, cocoa was found to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death by a whopping 50% over a 15 year period. Another study revealed that eating chocolate 2 or more times per week lowered the risk of having calcified plaque in the arteries by 32%. Eating chocolate less frequently had no effect. These free radicals can attack the cells of the body, creating cellular damage that can lead to increased inflammation and premature aging. One way to fight free radicals, and improve overall health, is through eating foods high in antioxidants, especially polyphenols and flavanols. Did you know dark chocolate contains more polyphenols and flavanols than antioxidant rich berries such as açaí berries and blueberries? Due to the high levels of antioxidants, dark chocolate can help expand the arteries, thus improving blood flow. This not only helps improve performance, but it may also reduce muscle soreness, thus increasing recovery after a tough workout. Dark Chocolate can also help you lose weight Sounds to good to be true right? Will Dark Chocolate Help You Lose Weight? But not all chocolate labelled “dark chocolate” is the same In order to get these health and weight loss benefits from dark chocolate, it should: Contain at least 70% cocoa solids (the darker the better) Be low in sugar Avoid milk chocolate products Not contain artificial flavors or chemicals Avoid high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated fats Just like with any packaged food, don’t just look at the big labels on the front of the package, read the ingredients list. How much dark chocolate should you eat a day? Just because it contains healthy minerals and antioxidants, it doesn’t mean you should eat the whole bar in one serving. Dark chocolate is high in calories, so consumption should be moderated based on your weight loss calorie needs. If weight loss is your goal, 1/2 to 1 oz of dark chocolate a day is fine. It’s very rich, so eat a few squares, savor it, and store the rest for tomorrow’s tasty snack. Not only will this help satisfy your cravings, dark chocolate may also enhance your mood due to increasing the happy neurotransmitter, serotonin. So if weight loss is your goal, add in a daily serving of dark chocolate so you don’t feel deprived, get to the gym, and create that healthy calorie deficit. Theobromine and Fat Loss: Theobromine is the major alkaloid in cocoa, giving cocoa its bitter taste. Theobromine is the substance responsible for chocolate being toxic to dogs and some other mammals. Humans process theobromine differently, leading the many health benefits rather than toxicity. Cocoa consumption began in the Americas and spread to Europe in the 16th century. It was traditionally used both as food and medicine. Theobromine concentrations are higher in dark chocolate than milk chocolate or white chocolate. Cocoa nibs and cocoa powder have the highest concentrations. It is a substance known as a methylxanthine derivative. Caffeine is also a methylxanthine → caffeine and theobromine are similar in molecular structure. Our affinity for chocolate has to do with the combination of caffeine and theobromine. -A study had participants consume a drink with a capsule of either placebo or a caffeine/theobromine combination similar to that of chocolate. Those that consumed the drink with the caffeine and theobromine reported liking the beverage more. Just like caffeine, theobromine is a stimulant. This is due to their effect on adenosine receptors. These compounds act as adenosine antagonists, taking the place of adenosine on receptors in the brain. Theobromine is about 1/10th as effective as caffeine in the body, so it takes much more theobromine to feel its effects than caffeine. The half-life, the amount of time that it takes for your body to process ½ of a substance, of theobromine is about 6 to 10 hours, longer than that of caffeine. This means that theobromine stays around in the body for a long period of time after consumption. Theobromine is an anti-inflammatory and reduces oxidative stress in the body. It has been found to help with asthma symptoms. Theobromine has been found to increase HDL cholesterol and decrease LDL cholesterol. Theobromine has been found to affect DNA and RNA structure. The full impacts of this are not yet known, but it is hypothesized that this can inhibit or induce gene expression. -Caffeine has been found to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. -Thus theobromine may be effective to treat some diseases and could be used in future drugs Theobromine and Weight Loss: Theobromine may help to speed up weight loss, but not as noticeably as caffeine. As a mild stimulant this can give you the energy to go for a run or hit the gym. As a diuretic, this can help you to empty the contents of your stomach. Also may act to suppress appetite, reducing our likelihood to consume unhealthy foods at moments of temptation. The quantity of theobromine found in chocolate and other foods, such as coffee, are unlikely to be high enough for you to notice any weight loss impact through the above means, especially when compared to caffeine in coffee. However, there are so many other health benefits, and the more all-around healthy you are the more able you are to live an active lifestyle. One of these has to do with insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is the most likely way that theobromine may aid in weight loss. A 2005 study had volunteers consume dark chocolate for 15 days, and then white chocolate. Is Dark Chocolate Good or Bad For Diabetes Download Diabetes Management Book: http://bit.ly/2g0NDAH Hello, I'm Ty Mason from TheDiabetesCouncil.com, researcher, writer and I have type 2 diabetes. Today I'm going to answer the question, is dark chocolate good for diabetes. But before we get into that, make sure you download my free diabetes management book which also includes a diabetes grocery shopping guide (foods to eat and avoid). Before we get going, I want you to remember, we are talking about dark chocolate and not milk chocolate, and there is a huge difference. What if you saw a headline in the newspaper saying that people with diabetes should eat chocolate daily to help reduce their blood glucose levels and insulin dependency? Well, a group of researchers from the University of Hull and the Hull York Medical School have found that dark chocolate has significant health benefits for people with Type 2 diabetes. A 2010 study conducted by Steve Atkin, Professor of Diabetes and Endocrinology, concluded that HDL or ‘good’ cholesterol is improved and overall cholesterol balance is enhanced when patients consume 45g of dark chocolate each day. This is the first study of its kind to report on the effects of giving chocolate to individuals with Type 2 diabetes over a period of 16 weeks. Dark chocolate containing 85% cocoa solids was given to one group with a placebo which contained no cocoa solids but was dyed the same color as the dark chocolate was given to another group. The patients were given instructions to eat no other chocolate, but to otherwise eat their normal diet. According to Atkin, “People with Type 2 diabetes are twice as likely to develop cardiovascular disease and since one of the main contributory factors to heart disease is a low level of HDL or ‘good’ cholesterol, the findings that dark chocolate can improve this, means the results of this study are hugely significant.” He continues: “Chocolate with a high cocoa content should be included in the diet of individuals with Type 2 diabetes as part of a sensible, balanced approach to diet and lifestyle. This study demonstrates that it can offer a potential reduction in cardiovascular risk without detrimental risks on weight, insulin resistance or glycemic control.” Who would’ve thought that dark chocolate could be helpful to those of us with diabetes? My research also found a very interesting fact about dark chocolate. It has a very low GI of 23 and a very low GL of 5. So, is dark chocolate good for diabetes? Surprisingly, yes it is! But, if you have never had dark chocolate before, don’t expect it to taste like a Hershey bar. Dark chocolate is a somewhat bitter. Also, this study was conducted with a pretty high quality dark chocolate. 85% cocoa solids is very high and can be expensive. Most commercial dark chocolate, Dove’s for example, is about 71% cocoa solids. The higher the cocoa content, the better. I hope this answered your question is dark chocolate good or bad for diabetes.
