How to Read a Material Safety Data Sheet

04:31
Description: One of the most under-taught and important skills in science and just in general, is the ability to read an MSDS sheet. MSDS sheets describe the safety precautions and harmfulness of the chemical for which they are assigned. By using and being able to accurately read these sheets, we are able to understand how much caution we should take in the lab. Content Area: Physical Science/Chemistry Instructional Objective: After viewing this video, a student will be able to correctly interpret and describe the precautions needed to be taken when working with a given chemical. Learner Description: This video is targeted at middle school or high school physical science and chemistry students, although at a general level, college students taking an introductory lab science could also benefit from viewing. How To Identify GMO-Free Food NOT Looking At Labels

06:57
http://www.TheRawfoodfamily.com I can imagine that you do not like this information, because it is uncomfortable. But, hey: Didn't say that it would be easy to be in charge of all the food you eat. But at least is it possible! As I have quite some distrust for labels on the food, I want to know FOR SURE that my food is GMO free and organic. All companies who want to sell their products can be accidentally or even consciously mistaken by labeling their food as "GMO-Free" or "organic". This video is giving some real good tips on how to identify REAL GMO-Free food without having to trust the labels on packages. I love how we can take the power back using the simple tips I am giving here in this video. We do NOT have to buy GMO foods, but can make our own decisions getting the GMO-free foods on our table. This is so important, as most of the "designed" or "hybrid" foods are trained to have less seeds and much sugar, which does decrease the natural force and nutrient content. And I am not even talking about pesticides or hormones here. Just the simple quality and nutrient content is much lower in GMO produced food. This is why it is so important to have the wild foods and the old types of our raw foods on our table. Did you know that ancient apples just had the size of cherries and were really sour? Those apples did contain 50 times more nutrients than our modern-timers. We need the old, wild sorts. Those are the foods that also have more life force and are better prepared to survive in nature without our protection. it is almost ironic, that most of the raw foods today wouldnt even be able to survive by themselves. they need us to protect, shelter and nurture them. We get so much more life force and nutrients out of the wild , old types of foods that are GMO-free. I hope you find some good tips in the video, and remain with all my wild food love Love KA Website: http://www.TheRawfoodfamily.com Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/Rawfoodfamilylife Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/kasundance.page Twitter: http://twitter.com/kasundance Get instant access to 5 free, nutrition-packed, easy to make raw food recipes. http://welcome.therawfoodfamily.com/ Give your kids something healthy to eat and yourself a life outside the kitchen as well! Hazard, Risk & Safety - Understanding Risk Assessment, Management and Perception

05:31
(subtitles available in English, French, Dutch, Spanish, Chinese and Russian, German, and a French version is available here: https://youtu.be/wRmfvFYDNr8) Hazard, Risk & Safety Danger, risques et sécurité Gevaar, risico's en veiligheid Peligro, riesgo y seguridad Опасность, риск и безопасность Gefahr, Risiko und Sicherheit We all hear these terms on a daily basis. So and so a chemical, physical or a biological agent poses a risk; This or that product is a hazard or behaving a certain way is unsafe. A lot of the time “hazard” and “risk” are freely used to mean the same thing. However they are not. Hazard is the potential to cause harm. Risk on the other hand is the likelihood of harm in defined circumstances. In a nutshell, hazard and risk are not always aligned as the risk depends on the exposure to the hazard ; similarly, risk, safety and perception of risk are not always aligned; this can make political decisions regarding safety levels difficult to make, in these cases it is especially important to base them on facts rather than on subjective perceptions. http://www.greenfacts.org

New California Prop 65 product warning rules, enforcement activities and compliance screening

42:51
This webinar explains the new Proposition 65 warning methods and content which take effect in California from 30 August 2018, highlights how Proposition 65 compliance is enforced by private ‘bounty hunter’ attorneys, and demonstrates how the screening assessment which is published inside BOMcheck helps companies reduce the time and cost for Proposition 65 compliance by 97%. Proposition 65 requires the Governor of California to publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer or birth defects or reproductive harm, and for businesses with 10 or more employees to provide “clear and reasonable” warnings if their products expose individuals to any Proposition 65 substance above “safe harbor” levels. The list currently includes more than 900 chemicals and the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) updates the list regularly. In August 2016 OEHHA introduced new regulations which change the “safe harbor” warnings which are deemed to comply with the law. The new “safe harbor” warning methods and content take effect from 30 August 2018. California empowers private citizens, working with ‘bounty hunter’ attorneys, to enforce compliance with these Proposition 65 warning requirements. In the past 17 years the number and size of the settlement payments carried out by private ‘bounty hunter’ attorneys have trebled, from around $10 million dollars in 2000 to around $30 million in 2016. There are more than 900 substances on the Proposition 65 list. Dr Paul Goodman at RINA consulting has produced a screening assessment which is published inside BOMcheck and helps companies the time and cost for Proposition 65 compliance by 97%. Dr Goodman’s screening of the 900+ Prop65 substances, supported by detailed investigations by BOMcheck (including checking relevant Prop65 settlements in California), found that • 105 substances may be found in component parts of mechanical or electrical products • 39 of these substances do not require “safe harbor” warnings, for example Indium Phosphide is a crystalline solid located inside electronic components which are located inside products • 66 of these substances may require “safe harbor” warnings BOMcheck has taken the screening to another level by identifying that 29 of these 66 substances are already regulated under RoHS, REACH substance restrictions, POPs regulation or REACH Candidate List in BOMcheck with the appropriate threshold levels. In other words, if supplier parts are already compliant to the RoHS, REACH substance restrictions, POPs regulation and REACH Candidate List in BOMcheck then there are only 37 new substances that suppliers need to provide compliance declarations for Proposition 65. The BOMcheck reporting tools produce a report on whether the suppliers’ parts contain any of the list of 66 Prop65 risk substances by combining the suppliers’ declarations data for the 37 new Proposition 65 substances with the suppliers’ declaration data for the 29 Proposition 65 substances which are already regulated under RoHS, REACH substance restrictions, POPs regulation or REACH Candidate List in BOMcheck.

3 Tests to Check if Your Honey is Pure or Fake

03:15
We all know that honey has a lot of health benefits, which is mainly due to the large number of vitamins and minerals that it contains. However, this is only true in pure honey and a lot of what you find at the supermarket is not pure honey. A lot of times, honey is mixed with glucose solutions or other honey with a high amount of water. This process is called being adulterated and it takes away from the health benefits that you receive from home. So, how can you tell if your honey is pure? Today we will discuss just that. 1. Solidification of the Honey Take a look at the bottle and see what the honey inside of it looks like. Overtime, all honey will crystallize into something looking like granulated sugar. If it is crystallized in the store, this is pure honey. If it is liquid, you could wait to see if it solidifies. Putting it in the refrigerator will speed up that process. If your honey never turns into crystals, then it is likely that you do not have pure honey on your hands. 2. Read the Label Before you purchase any products, you should always learn to read labels. Make sure that the ingredient list of the honey does not contain high-fructose corn syrup or glucose. These are two substances that are usually added to honey that keep it from solidifying. Companies also add this to the honey so that they get more honey out of their batch. 3. Test It There are other ways to test to see if your honey is pure: Mix some honey with water, then add four or five drops of vinegar. If the liquid turns foamy, that is not pure honey. It may have a substance called gypsum added to it. Mix a tablespoon of honey with water. If the honey dissolves easily, it is not pure, as pure honey should remain intact when dipped into water. Use a match to try and burn the honey, as pure honey will light up and burn due to the sugar content. Other low-quality honey usually contains water that will prevent it from lighting and burning. Put some honey onto a spoon and hold it up. If the honey falls quickly, then this is not pure honey. Good quality, pure honey, will stay on the spoon or fall ever so slowly. Use a small piece of old, stale bread and put it in honey. Leave it in for ten minutes and then pull it out of the honey. If the bread is still hard, then you have pure honey. If the honey has added water, the bread will be soggy. You can also use iodine to identify impure honey. Just mix honey, water and a few drops of iodine. If the mixture turns blue, then the honey has some sort of added flour or starch in it. Testing your honey will ensure that you have pure, unadulterated honey that will provide you with the health benefits of honey that you know of and care about. Do you buy honey often? Did you know that honey can be tampered with by manufacturer’s to better meet their bottom line, rather than your health? Sound off in our comment section to continue this discussion. Serbian school takes the lead in entrepreneurial skills development

01:01
During the European Vocational Skills Week, taking place in Vienna between 5 and 9 November, Subotica School for Chemical Technology received by the European Training Foundation a best practice award in developing students’ entrepreneurial skills. By placing students in real-life situations, such as creating companies selling products in local shops, the school emerged as outstanding among examples from countries surrounding the EU. Through learning-by-doing students develop a real entrepreneurial mindset, including competences such as identifying opportunities, sustainable thinking, and working in teams. The prize was awarded by ETF Director, Cesare Onestini, in the presence of the EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility, Marianne Thyssen. *** In Subotica, a town in western Serbia, the students of the School of Chemical Technology acquire entrepreneurial competences by setting up real companies. Developing businesses from the initial idea right up to actually selling products in their local community at competitive prices, students work on a variety of topics ranging from chemicals, to textiles and baked goods. A best practice in the EU neighbourhood The school, which selected the production of liquid soap as a success story, was awarded by the European Training Foundation as an example of best practice in the development of entrepreneurship as a key competence. Emerging as best among candidates from 8 countries, the Serbian school proved outstanding in applying the EU’s Entrepreneurship competence framework (EntreComp), a tool which promotes the entrepreneurial mindset of students. The prize was given by ETF Director, Cesare Onestini in the presence of EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility, Marianne Thyssen, on the occasion of an award ceremony taking place in Vienna on 8 November, during the European Vocational Skills Week. Students, real active players The students of the award-winning project attend school and are active players in the production chain: they choose the colour of the soap and its scent; they design the logo, and packaging; they check the sales in the local shop, and make sure that the whole production process is undertaken in an eco-friendly way. As a consequence, beyond learning to become chemical lab technicians, they acquire entrepreneurial skills such as vision, planning, creativity and sustainable thinking. A school inspired by the EU’s drive in entrepreneurial skills The school is inspired by EntreComp, an EU tool for building entrepreneurial mindsets. The school has set concrete learning outcomes in the field of entrepreneurial skills development. Moreover, as far as teaching methodologies are concerned, it has put strong emphasis on self-directed learning, learning-by-doing and acquiring entrepreneurial experience by working on a school-based business. Finally, it proved to be a leader in the field of local business eco-system integration, by putting strong emphasis on environmental protection. The discussion on competences will continue in Turin, Italy, on 21-22 November during the ‘Skills for the Future: Managing Transition’ conference – an event organized by the European Training Foundation which will put a spotlight on the skills needed to prepare people for the job market in a rapidly changing world. Participants from more than 50 countries – entrepreneurs, training providers, policy makers, innovators – will be attending with the aim of exploring how transition countries can respond to global trends shaping the labour market of tomorrow from a skills perspective. For more information: www.skills4future.eu Background The European Training Foundation is the EU agency supporting the countries neighbouring the EU to reform their education and labour market systems, in line with the EU’s external action policy. Each year it launches a call for good practice in entrepreneurship key competence promotion in vocational education and training, specifically targeting countries in the EU neighbourhood. The purpose is to promote the sharing of examples of best practice, and to raise the awareness about Entrecomp, a tool developed by the EU to promote the entrepreneurial mindset of students. The winner is awarded during the European Vocational Skills Week, an event organised annually by the European Commission. This year’s edition, taking place in Vienna, is organised in cooperation with the Austrian Presidency of the EU. The winners of the previous ETF best practice awards for entrepreneurship as key competence development were the Technological Entrepreneurship Programme implemented in schools in Israel (2016) and Palestine Polytechnic University for its innovative teaching and learning approach (2017).

Totally un necessary - You NEVER need to use chemicals to treat timber. This is old stuff - but just goes to show what horrible chemicals our houses are treated with. Historic England research, and much other work, all say - chemical treatment never needed, to stop timber problems, just dry the timber. Dry timber does NOT get attacked by beetle, fungus, or anything else. See BS7913.

Or maybe you’ve wondered what the chemical substances are that make up paracetamol and kill our pain? In all of these everyday situations, chemistry and CUF are there, guaranteeing the quality and standard of living in our modern societies. The importance of Companhia União Fabril is not something new. Founded in 1865 by the Portuguese industrialist Alfredo da Silva, CUF contributed decisively to the development of Portugal. This was so true that the company’s motto became: "What the country doesn’t have, CUF creates.” But CUF isn’t just about making chemical products that are essential to our dayto-day lives. It also does research and invests in nanotechnology and materials of the future.

Advanced Pharmaceutical Manufacturing

01:03:26
There are a number of challenges that the industry faces in order to transition towards more competitive, systematic and efficient manufacturing. Regulatory authorities have recognized the deficiencies of pharmaceutical product manufacturing and aim to enhance process understanding through Quality by Design (QbD) and Process Analytical Technology (PAT) tools. As a result of this current effort to change the mindset in order to mimic the rest of the chemical industry, an additional transition is becoming more and more appealing: transition from batch to continuous production mode. However, continuous manufacturing requires detailed process understanding in terms of the evolution of all critical material properties as a function of its operating parameters and environmental conditions. Once process knowledge is translated into models, computer aided dynamic simulation tools will allow the design, analysis and optimization of continuous integrated processes. In this talk I will discuss the work that has been done in my lab towards the development of an integrated platform that will enable the efficient flowsheet simulation and analysis, the assessment of design alternatives, the feasibility analysis of the production line, and the control and optimization of process design and operations. The developed flowsheet model includes modules for all the necessary unit operations, namely powder feeding, mixing, roller compaction, tablet press and milling integrated to represent a tablet manufacturing line. Models used to represent each unit operation vary from empirical, first-principle or hybrid. Population balance models are developed in order to track the composition and particle size changes throughout complex powder processes dynamically. The developed flowsheet simulation is used to predict the propagation of upstream disturbances to final product quality, the assessment of recycle stream benefits, the identification of process integration bottlenecks and evaluation of different control strategies in order to retain the process within its design space. In addition, global dynamic sensitivity analysis is performed to identify critical process parameters not only within each unit operation, but also between different processes. Finally, simulation based optimization techniques enable the identification of the optimal operating conditions, as well as the optimal design sequence which leads to pharmaceutical tablets with desired characteristics. This work aims to merge knowledge, experience, experimental results and modeling tools for developing a dynamic simulation platform that will enable the safe implementation of the transition towards continuous pharmaceutical manufacturing.
