Iran and Russia join forces for joint war games in Caspian Sea - Iran military 2019

03:47
Iran and Russia join forces for joint war games in Caspian Sea - IRAN and Russia are preparing to hold joint naval exercises in the Caspian Sea for “peace and stability”, says the commander of the Iranian navy. Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi has been quoted by semi-official news agency Mehr as saying the two countries are planning “war games” that will be implemented in the “near future”. Iran and Russia have held several naval drills in the Caspian Sea, including in 2015 and 2017, with the Iranian commander saying cooperation between both navies had “strengthened in recent years”. He also praised wider Caspian Sea cooperation as a “model for guaranteeing peace, stability and friendship”. Mehr reported on Sunday the naval commander said: “Tactical, rescue and anti-piracy war games between Iranian and Russian naval forces are being planned and will be implemented in the near future.” The two countries have close ties, including in Syria where they both back President Bashar al-Assad in the country’s civil war. Mr Khanzadi Iran’s opposition to the military presence of any country from outside the region in the Caspian Sea, saying: “All countries around the Caspian have the same approach,” Mehr reported. Russia said last year it was firmly committed to deepening ties with Iran despite a US decision to quit an international nuclear deal and reimpose sanctions on Tehran. Enclosed by land and borderes by Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, the Caspian Sea is the world’s biggest enclosed body of water. The sea is rich in offshore oil and gas deposits worth trillions of dollars. In August Iran and Russia agreed with the three other ex-soviet nations how to divide up the oil and gas resources of the sea, leading the way for more energy exploration. The deal followed a vow made by US president Donald Trump to implement sanctions against Iran’s energy industry in an attempt to restrict its trade of oil. Yesterday Iran sent a menacing warning to the US, threatening to deploy warships in the Atlantic Ocean in response to repeated US deployments in the Persian Gulf. The news came as tensions between Washington and Tehran continued to deteriorate over the former's decision to scrap a landmark nuclear deal and reimpose strict sanctions in response to Iran's alleged ties to revolutionary Shiite Muslim movements across the Middle East and its ballistic missile development. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), or so-called Iran nuclear deal, was agreed by China, France, Germany, the European Union, Iran, Russia, United Kingdom, United States (who later withdrew under Donald Trump). It was intended to curb Iran’s nuclear energy programme, which the West maintained it was using as a cover up to develop a nuclear bomb. The agreement was struck in return for the lifting of crippling economic sanctions. But Trump withdrew from the deal last year, branding it “decaying and rotten”. Seals, caviar and oil: Caspian Sea under threat from pollution

01:12
Bordered by Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan, the 1,000-kilometre-long Caspian is the world's largest inland body of water. It is home to a range of native species -- from the seals to Caspian turtles and the famed beluga sturgeon -- and also to vast energy reserves, estimated at 50 billion barrels of oil. But pollution from the extraction of that oil and gas, along with declining water-levels due to climate change, has left many species under threat and the future of the sea itself at risk.

Iran Kazakhstan China Economic corridor From China Ningbo harbor to Caspian port

02:15
January 20, 2019 (Persian calendar 1397/10/30) Ningbo great harbor is being connected to Caspian port complex by sending first cargo. First shipment of goods from Great Ningbo Harbor of China was sent to Caspian Port complex via new corridor of China - Kazakhstan - Iran. This cargo was shipped from Ningbo port in northeastern of China to be the transfer from new corridor then goes through railway to the port of Aktau in Kazakhstan and shipped to the Caspian port complex by ship said Reza Masrour رضا مسرور. The previous shipments was shipped to Iran from central and western of China, and the importance of this new consignment was due to its origin that is coming from eastern China, which illustrates advantage of shipping through this route from China to Iran over its current routes. Dr. Reza Masroor دكتر رضا مسرور pointed out that Chinese have invested multi-billion dollar in order to activate new Silk Road routes transferring of goods via new corridor from China to Iran that is one of the most important parts of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Anzali Free Zone and China's economic and investment cooperation Association, and agreements with director of China chamber of commerce for private sector during my visit to this country last month and special sessions has been hold for activating this important corridor, which is part of the new Silk Road Corridor. The chairman of the board of directors and managing director of the organization pointed out the role of corridor in development of trade exchanges and transit of goods from China through Anzali free zone route to neighboring countries. During trip of Dr. Nobakht دكتر نوبخت vice- president to Guilan province for inauguration of Qazvin-Rasht-Anzli railway راه آهن قزوين رشت انزلي and visiting from under construction railway Rasht to Caspian Port complex and Anzali port, advantages of new Iran-China corridor that have been operated after several years of follow-up by our organization was described to vice president, and Dr. Nobakht expressed his satisfaction with the activity of new corridor and emphasized on the role of Anzali free zone for expansion of trade exchanges between two country and Caspian sea countries. Dr. Masrour said about the type and number of shipment: 42 "40-foot containers that contain parts for bicycle parts, industrial engineers parts, -wallpaper, brake pad and ... that has been sent to Iran through railroad to Aktau port by December 18, and this shipped cargo will berth in the Caspian port complex. He explained importance of this transshipment in the new Iranian-Chinese corridor as a transfer of cargo from the easternmost point of China as a fully developed region, adding that the transit route of China (Urumchi), Kazakhstan (Aktau Port) Iran( Caspian port complex) In order to create new combined routes between Iran and China by orientation of Anzali Free Zone, the increased cargo transportation capacity in the Caspian Sea from this July with the presence of the first vice president and national and provincial officials and chairs of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce by berthing of first ship on this route has officially inaugurated on the Caspian port complex. It should be mentioned that this corridor starts from China and connects through railway of China-Kazakhstan to Aktau port and through Caspian Sea reach to Caspian port. With the operation of this corridor 10 million tons of goods can be transported, and the main advantage of this corridor is to reduce the distance, time and cost of shipping goods over the existing route through the Yellow Sea, the Indian Ocean and Bandar Abbas in southern Iran. Ningbo is a city in the northeast of Jijiang Province of China, 25 kilometers east sea of China as one of the most important industrial and commercial ports of the country since seventh century up. It is considered as a small sample of Shanghai in the Chinese economy, and the port Ningbo has been ranked second in terms of operational capability in commercial shipments. "SEVEN SPLENDORS OF PERSIA" 1960s IRAN TRAVELOGUE TEHRAN SHAH MOHAMMED REZA PAHLAVI 11474

25:27
This episode of Jack Douglas’ television series Across the Seven Seas, “Seven Splendors of Persia,” joins American travel filmmakers Clifford and Bunny Kamen on their trip to Iran for a look at the splendors of old Persia. The episode opens with a shot of the Kamens leaving their home. Clifford Kamen speaks to the camera about his travels (brief footage shows him in Greece and Peru) and his recent trip with his wife to Iran, formally known as Persia. The couple walk of an airplane. Footage gives viewers a brief look inside Tehran’s airport and at the city’s buildings and streets with snow-capped peaks rising in the background. The couple have tea with an Iranian woman—supposedly a descendant of the Qajar dynasty—in her garden (02:49). At Iran’s National Bank, viewers are treated to a look inside a massive vault that houses pearls, emeralds, rubies, a large pink diamond, and the Imperial Crown of the Shah (03:32). Next, they visit the former private palatial residence of Persia’s shahs, which is now a museum (04:10), including a tour of the royal throne room (04:29). Here, viewers see the Great Peacock Throne with its leopard designed out of precious gems; the back of throne is a sheet of gold studded with more gemstones. The Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, arrives in the throne room for an official state function (05:44). On the shores of the Caspian Sea, fishermen prepare large nets to fish for sturgeon (06:16). The fishermen pull a massive net back to shore, but only catch one sturgeon. Some of the men cut open a sturgeon and remove the caviar (07:25). The Americans visit a Turkmen village (08:25), where they get to watch a traditional war dance. The episode shows a view of the Persian desert from a plane window (09:18), then the Kamens arrive in Shiraz. A young girl works on weaving a Persian rug (09:44). Young girls sit at a loom working on a rug. Men load rugs onto a wagon (10:54) in order to wash them in a river before they are shipped out to market. Cars drive over a drying rug on a street to help give it an antique look. Flames rise out of desert mountains from excess gas released from oil reserves (11:47). Crude oil is naturally pushed to surface here. An oil tanker carries oil to Europe (12:25). The next stop is the beautiful city of Isfahan (13:12), with its numerous domed mosques. Viewers get to see the intricate tilework inside one of the domes (14:17), as well as men praying inside one of the mosques. The Kamens visit the Great Bazaar of Isfahan where we see camels turning a stone wheel to press anise seed (15:22) and artisans making copper and brass trays. The next stop is out in the wilderness where the Kashgai tribe migrates to its wintering grounds (17:14). Children ride donkeys and horses. Camels haul supplies. Two girls “unpack” little goats from a large sack on top of a donkey. The two Americans have tea with the Kashgai. The final stop is at the ruins of the ancient city of Persepolis (20:06), where viewers see the ceremonial center of the city (20:38), a road with the columns from what was the Gateway of Xerxes, and a number of polished stone reliefs. Close-up shots show ancient items from the city, including a golden dagger and a golden cup. We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? Iran: Shoppers express frustration at economy ahead of Persian New Year

03:19
Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe Iranians expressed their hopes for a better economy as they prepared for Persian New Year, or Nowruz, in Tehran on Thursday. Shoppers in Tehran's Grand Bazaar could be seen buying goods such as food, plants and even goldfish to create a Haft-sin - an arrangement comprised of seven symbolic items beginning with the Persian letter 'seen.' Performers dressed as the Iranian folklore character Hajji Firuz could be seen singing and dancing their way through the market. Despite the festive atmosphere, shoppers expressed frustration about Iran's strained economy following US sanctions on the country, which were re-imposed last November. Shopkeeper Esmaeil Zolfaghari said: "Goods have become more expensive, even three times, but our earnings are the same as the last year or a little bit more. The living expenses are expensive and expenditures and income are not equal." Other shoppers said that help from Europe was not coming fast enough, arguing that Europe's recent introduction of the INSTEX (Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges) mechanism was not sufficient in helping Iran continue to trade. Hossein Javadi, an Iranian actor, said: "If they [the European community] really want to help, do it so we can feel it in reality, so that the youth feel it and can become hopeful and reassured. The issue is that they say that they will help, but when? In ten years? In twenty years?" Other shoppers wished for the new year to bring economic stability, job opportunities and prosperity to the country. Nowruz, which has its roots in Zoroastrianism, begins on the vernal equinox each year and is celebrated in communities around the world. Iran’s navy will visit the western Atlantic Ocean

02:36
A “flotilla” from Iran’s navy will visit the western Atlantic Ocean in the spring, according to Tehran’s official news agency. In an interview with the Islamic Republic News Agency published Friday, Rear Adm. Touraj Hasna Moqaddam said that the cruise “would take five months to complete" and feature Iran’s newest domestically-built destroyer, the Sahand. On Dec. 1, Iran’s state TV reported the commissioning of the Sahand in the southern port of Bandar Abbas, at the mouth of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the passageway for nearly a third of all oil traded by sea. Moqaddam’s words echo similar announcements by other senior Iranian leaders telegraphing Atlantic deployments in recent years as a visible counterweight to ongoing U.S. warships that routinely sail the Persian Gulf. No Iranian cruises to the Western Atlantic ever occurred but Tehran’s vessels began extending their reach to the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden on anti-piracy missions. Iranian media reported that the Sahand-led tour likely would travel to Venezuela, an Iranian partner. It’s the second Sahand that’s been operated by the Iranian navy but the only one that’s still afloat. #irannavy #iraniannavy #iranship #military shorturl.at/BKLW2

Iranian Kebab - Best in Bazzar Tehran

10:00
In this episode we are taking you to a busy restaurant called Moslem. Moslem Rastgoo is the owner of this restaurant which is located in the heart of Bazzar Tehran. Iran is the land of Kababs but Iranian cuisine is much more diverse, complicated and difficult to be made than that. Located in the Middle East, Iranian cuisine has both influenced and been influenced by its Western and Eastern neighbors. Perhaps, the modern Iranian style of cooking includes a wide variety of foods, a combination of Mesopotamian, Anatolian, Central Asian, Russian, Armenian and the ancient Iranian recipes, finely blended together as one of the most delicious cuisines in the world. In Iran, fresh herbs, pomegranates, dried plums and prunes, raisins, apricots and saffron are generously consumed in the process of cooking, giving the food a delicate and moderate flavor which is not too spicy, too sour, too sweet or too salty. Chelow Kabab which is relatively simpler than the other recipes, is considered Iran’s national dish and served throughout Iran today, though was traditionally associated with the northern part of the country. Chelow Kabab is steamed, saffroned Iranian rice and kabab, of which there are several distinct varieties. Kabab Koobideh: Koobideh is the Iran’s signature Kebab and the most famous of them all. It is made from ground lamb, beef or chicken mixed with chopped onions. Koobideh refers to the style that meat was prepared, originally placed on a flat stone (precisely a black flat stone) and was smashed by wooden mallet. Joojeh Kabab: Joujeh Kabab is barbecued chicken with olive oil, tomatoes and saffron. Kabab Barg: Barg is in fact barbecued lamb, chicken or beef kebab dish. The main ingredients of Kabab-e Barg are fillets of beef tenderloin, lamb shank, onions, safron, olive oil and mild spices. Shishlik or Shish Kebab: Shishlik meaning skewered meat is originally made of lamb and popular in many countries. In Iran, it is grilled meat with bones, previously marinated in onion, olive oil and saffron. Kabab Torsh: Kabab torsh is a traditional kebab from Gilan province in Iran. It is made with beef – usually sirloin or tenderloin – marinated in a paste made of crushed walnuts, pomegranate juice or paste, chopped parsley, olive oil, and crushed garlic. Kabab Soltani: The combination of one Kabab Barg and one Kabab Koobideh is typically called soltānī, meaning King’s (meal). Kabab Torki: Kabab Torki aka Turkish Kabab is same Doner Kabab and Shawarma in other countries. In Iran it is served in big pita breads with stir fried veggies. Kabab Chenjeh: Chenjeh is pure meat and very similar to western steaks. However, unlike most of Iranian Kebabs, onion is not used in prepration. Chenjeh is usually made from the meat of newly slaughtered sheep, when it’s still soft and fresh. Mahi Kabab: Mahi Kabab or barbecued fish is popular in both northern and southern Iran, particularly in Caspian sea and Persian Gulf regions. However white fish (Caspian Kutum) from the Caspian Sea is among the preferred type for the dish.

Iran Navy foils pirates attack on Iranian oil tanker, Bab Al-Mandab strait دزدان دريايي باب المندب

00:39
March 8, 2019 (Persian calendar 1397/12/17) Iran's naval forces have successfully thwarted a pirate attack on an Iranian oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden خليج عدن. Pirates in 11 speedboats attacked the oil tanker with a cargo of more than 150,000 tonnes in Bab el-Mandeb Strait تنگه باب المندب. However, commandos of the Navy’s 60th flotilla of warships, which patrols the Gulf of Aden in an overseas mission, managed to repel the attack. The 60th flotilla, comprising Bayandor destroyer, Bushehr logistic vessel and Lavan logistic warship, set off for high seas on January 23 on a mission to maintain the Islamic Republic’s power in international waters and safeguard maritime routes. In recent years, Iran’s Navy has increased its presence in international waters to protect naval routes and provide security for merchant vessels and tankers. In line with international efforts against piracy, the Iranian Navy has been conducting patrols in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, safeguarding merchant containers and oil tankers owned or leased by Iran or other countries. Iran’s Navy has managed to foil several attacks on both Iranian and foreign tankers during its missions in international waters. Iran's Revolution at 40

17:56
On February 11 2019, the Islamic Republic of Iran marked the 40th anniversary of the overthrow of its monarchy after a popular revolution. Iran has faced a variety of challenges over the past 40 years and will be marking this anniversary in an atmosphere of renewed sanctions and tensions with the United States, intermittent protests and internal economic challenges. What is next for Iran going forward and how has its domestic and international outlook shifted over the last four decades? Will political and economic corruption, often discussed as institutionalized in Iran's governing systems remain prevalent? What effect will continued sanctions have on both domestic unrest and the Iranian economy? And how does Iran define its own role in the Middle East?

Iran announces navy drill in key Strait of Hormuz

00:33
Iran's navy says it will hold a drill in the strategically-important Strait of Hormuz. It comes months after the United States re-imposed sanctions on Iran that targeted its vital oil sector. The strait is located at the mouth of the Persian Gulf and is crucial to global energy supplies, with about a third of all oil traded at sea passing through it. An Iranian military official says the three-day maneuvers will start Friday and extend as far as the Sea of Oman and the fringes of the Indian Ocean. Iran's Revolutionary Guard said it had shot down an "intruding American spy drone" after it entered into the country's territory Thursday. U.S has also acknowledged that an RQ-4A Global Hawk High-Altitude, Long, Endurance (HALE) Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) has been downed. Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said on Twitter on Thursday. "At 00:14 US drone took off from UAE in stealth mode & violated Iranian airspace. It was targeted at 04:05 at the coordinates (25°59'43"N 57°02'25"E) near Kouh-e Mobarak”. The Revolutionary Guard of Iran in a statement issued on Thursday stated, “The drone was launched from a US base south of the Persian Gulf shortly after midnight on Thursday. It said it flew from the Strait of Hormuz towards Chabahar, a city in southeast Iran. While returning to the western Hormuz Strait's region the drone violated Iran's airspace and engaged in information gathering and spying,”. The statement added, "At 4.05 a.m. local time while the violating airplane was over Iranian territory, [it] was shot down.” The head of the Revolutionary Guard Corps, Maj. Gen. Hossein Salami, said the shooting down of the drone had sent a warning to the US. "The only way for our enemies to be safe is to respect our sovereignty, national security, and the national interests of the great Iranian nation." The location of the drone has become a key point of contention since the incident. Iran maintains that the US aircraft was downed in Iranian territory, while the U.S claims that it was in international airspace. The United States has provided a different coordinate which is around 9 nautical miles southwest of what Iran as furnished. U.S President Donald Trump has tweeted that "Iran made a very big mistake.” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office of the White House in a joint media appearance with the visiting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. "This drone was in international waters, clearly. We have it all documented scientifically not just words. And they made a very big mistake," A single RQ-4A Global Hawk costs $131.4 million excluding R&D expenses, which makes it pricier than an F 35. This latest incident could be an inflection point and lead to the outbreak of a conflict between U.S & Iran. ALSO ON RT.COMWinners & losers from Iranian oil sanctions Seoul had to find new suppliers after the latest round of US sanctions against the Islamic Republic, which hit the Iranian oil sector hard. The restrictions were re-imposed by the Trump administration after Washington unilaterally withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and several world powers. Since then the US has been threatening to cut Iranian crude exports to zero. Some crude importers, including China and Taiwan, India, Turkey, Greece, Japan, Italy, and South Korea were allowed to continue imports of Iranian oil. However, the US refused to renew the sanction waivers and since May 2 those who continue buying Iranian crude risk facing US sanctions. ALSO ON RT.COMCrude mood: Oil prices soar as US set to sanction countries buying Iranian crude South Korea was one of the largest buyers of Iranian condensate, which is an extremely light form of crude. It is mostly used for producing vehicle fuel, such as gasoline, or diluting heavier crude oils. South Korea started bracing for the lack of Iranian supplies last year, and spent around US$9 billion to buy and test some 23 different types of condensate from 15 countries, according to Reuters. Iran First step forward 4+1 group 60 days to back table for JCPOA گام نخست پيشروي برجام ايران

33:29
May 8, 2019 (Persian calendar 1398/2/18) Iranian President Hassan Rouhani حسن روحاني said Tehran will back off from more commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal and will raise uranium enrichment level if its economic interests under the JCPOA برجام in the oil and banking sectors are not fulfilled within 60 days. Speaking at a cabinet session on Wednesday, Rouhani said the five remaining parties to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) -Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany- have been informed of Tehran’s decision to refuse to continue honoring two commitments under the deal. He said Iran stops selling any enriched uranium above the 300 kg limit in exchange for yellow cake and also stops selling its heavy water above the limit of 130 metric Tons. The president also announced that the JCPOA parties will have 60 days to come to the negotiating table and fulfill Iran’s main interests under the nuclear deal, especially regarding oil sales and banking interaction. If Iran does not achieve the desired results after 60 days, it will take two more measures and stop observing the limit on uranium enrichment to 3.67 percent purity, he added. The president said Iran will also make a new decision about its Arak heavy water reactor واكنشگر هسته اي آب سنگين اراك -which was planned to be renovated with the participation of the JCPOA parties- after the 60 day deadline. Rouhani also threatened that Iran will take a “decisive measure” if the JCPOA parties would intend to send Iran’s nuclear case to the UN Security Council. “We will not start breaching commitments and waging any war, but we will not give in to bullying, either, and will give a decisive response to any aggressor,” the president underlined. On Wednesday morning, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council decided that Tehran will stop honoring certain commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal, which had been already scrapped by the US. Iran’s announcement comes a year after US President Donald Trump pulled his country out of the agreement, which was signed in 2015. Elsewhere, the Iranian president highlighted Iran’s leading role in the fight against terrorism in the region, from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea and from the Caspian Sea to the Red Sea, noting that if Iran had not fought against terrorism, the terrorists would have acted freely in the European capitals. Rouhani also underlined that Iran blocked a wave of migrants heading to Europe and hosted millions of refugees, and also acted as a strong front in the war on narcotics. According to the president, Iran cannot afford the heavy costs of combating narcotics and addressing the problem of refugees, saying the US measures have disabled Iran from paying billions of dollars in expenses necessary for those plans. Rouhani underscored that Iran would not pay the costs of the JCPOA alone and that all parties have to bear the burden if the nuclear deal is to serve the global and regional peace and security. The president threatened the JCPOA parties that Iran will have to halt cooperation in the war on drugs and in preventing the influx of refugees if the other parties stand idle and only seek to benefit from the nuclear agreement. Previously, the Syrian Democratic Forces, assisted by their US allies, liberated Baghouz from ISIS. However, it appears they did them a favor. However, it's becoming increasingly difficult for them to control the region. The locals are beginning to resist the Kurdish structures. The town of Baghouz has been basically desolated, there's nothing left there.

A Canadian Family in Iran یک خانواده کانادایی در ایران

19:38
In 1971 Ken Rusk and his family moved to Iran while he was working for the Ontario Hydro. In those days, due to a spike in oil prices and the King of Iran’s intention to modernize, Iran was going through a period of social and economic change. Infrastructure systems in Iran required major improvements, therefore Iran hired international companies as contractors to help modernize the country. Ontario Hydro was one of those companies. Moving to Iran from Canada was a major cultural shift for the Rusk family. Part of Ken's job was traveling to different parts of the country and as Ken had a passion for photography, he took almost one thousand photos during his time in Iran. These photos were kept in the form of slides that were never printed. After the families' return to Canada, the slides were forgotten in Ken’s storage. In 2012, Ken met Ali Farschian, a Real Estate Agent in Toronto from Iran. Ken shared his story about his trip to Iran and the existence of the slides and Ali became very interested in these rare and never-before-seen photos. Ali encouraged Ken to locate them and share them with him so he could digitize them and make them available for others to see. Ken and Ali recently traveled to the Iranian Plaza in Toronto so Ken could experience a taste of Iran that he so missed in Toronto. Watch this short documentary to learn more about Ken’s story and to see some of the rare and valuable images of Iran he took in the 1970's.

The Southern Tip of Russia: 7 Facts about Dagestan

In this video you can find 7 little known facts about Dagestan. Keep watching and subscribe, as more episodes will follow! You can now support this channel via Patreon, by accessing the link bellow. Thank you! https://www.patreon.com/7facts Social Media: https://twitter.com/Sebastian2Go https://www.facebook.com/official7facts ------------------------------------------------ More information about the video content bellow: 1. Dagestan is a federal subject (a republic) of Russia, located in the North Caucasus region. Dagestan encompasses a large section of the eastern Caucasus mountains and 250 miles of Caspian Sea coastline. Dagestan mean the "Mountain Kingdom." Dagestan is the largest republic in the northern Caucasus. 2. In the first few centuries AD, Caucasian Albania (corresponding to modern Azerbaijan and southern Dagestan) became a vassal and eventually subordinate to the Parthian Empire. In later antiquity, it was a few times fought over by the Roman Empire and the Sassanid Persians as the former sought to contest the latter's rule over the region, without success. Over the centuries, to a relatively large extent, the peoples within the Dagestan territory converted to Christianity alongside Zoroastrianism. 3. With a population of 2,910,249, Dagestan is very ethnically diverse and Russia's most heterogeneous republic, with the largest ethnicity constituting less than 30% of the population. It is sometimes known as the Mountain of Languages, or Mountain of Nationalities - with some national groups occupying no more than one or two villages. Its tremendous ethnic diversity is attributed the combination of isolated valleys and its location at the crossroads between cultures in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. 4. The capital, Makhachkala, on Russia’s Caspian Sea coast, was conquered by the Russian Imperial army in the 19th century and served as a major pre-revolutionary trading port. Today, Dagestan is a conduit for major oil and gas pipelines, which go from the Caspian Sea to the Russian heartland. 5. Derbent is a city in the Republic of Dagestan, Russia, located on the Caspian Sea, north of the Azerbaijani border. It is the southernmost city in Russia, and it is the second-most important city of Dagestan. Derbent occupies the narrow gateway between the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus Mountains connecting the Eurasian steppes to the north and the Iranian Plateau to the south. Derbent claims to be the oldest city in Russia with historical documentation dating to the 8th century BCE. 6. Dagestan was incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1921 after the end of Russia Civil War. During 1920-22 most of the Dagestani people joined the Chechens in a widespread revolt against Soviet power; some of the secret Islamic orders that led the revolt continued to practice terrorism through the Soviet period. Many of Dagestan’s people were deported to Siberia and Central Asia in World War II. The deportation was particularly unfair because most of the deported people had no contact with the Germans. 7. Since 2000, Dagestan has been the venue of a low-level guerrilla war, bleeding over from Chechnya; the fighting has claimed the lives of hundreds of federal servicemen and officials—mostly members of local police forces—as well as many Dagestani national rebels and civilians. Iran , also called Persia and officially the Islamic Republic of Iran is a country in Western Asia. With over 81 million inhabitants, Iran is the world's 18th most populous country. Its territory spans 1,648,195 km2 (636,372 sq mi), making it the second largest country in the Middle East and the 17th largest in the world. Iran is bordered to the northwest by Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan,[a] to the north by the Caspian Sea, to the northeast by Turkmenistan, to the east by Afghanistan and Pakistan, to the south by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, and to the west by Turkey and Iraq. Its central location in Eurasia and Western Asia, and its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz, give it geostrategic importance. Tehran is the capital, largest city, and leading economic and cultural center. #Iran #Fact #Muslim Iran is home to one of the world's oldest civilizations, beginning with the formation of the Elamite kingdoms in the fourth millennium BCE. It was first unified by the Iranian Medes in the seventh century BCE, and reached its territorial height in the sixth century BCE under Cyrus the Great, whose Achaemenid Empire stretched from Eastern Europe to the Indus Valley, one of the largest empires in history. The empire fell to Alexander the Great in the fourth century BCE and was divided into several Hellenistic states. An Iranian rebellion established the Parthian Empire in the third century BCE, which was succeeded in the third century CE by the Sasanian Empire, a leading world power for the next four centuries. Arab Muslims conquered the empire in the seventh century CE, and the subsequent Islamization of Iran led to the decline of the once dominant Zoroastrian religion. Iran's major contributions to art, philosophy, and science spread throughout the Muslim world and beyond during the Islamic Golden Age. Over the next two centuries, a series of native Muslim dynasties emerged before the Seljuq Turks and the Ilkhanate Mongols conquered the region. The rise of the native Safavids in the 15th century led to the reestablishment of a unified Iranian state and national identity, with the country's conversion to Shia Islam marking a turning point in Iranian and Muslim history. Under Nader Shah, Iran was one of the most powerful states in the 18th century, though by the 19th century, a series of conflicts with the Russian Empire led to significant territorial losses. The Iranian Constitutional Revolution in the early 20th century created a constitutional monarchy and the country's first legislature. A 1953 coup instigated by the United Kingdom and the United States resulted in greater autocracy and growing Western political influence. Subsequent widespread dissatisfaction and unrest against the monarchy led to the 1979 Revolution, which established the existing Islamic republic, combining elements of a parliamentary democracy with a theocracy governed by an autocratic "Supreme Leader". For most of the 1980s, Iran fought a with Iraq that resulted in severe casualties and economic devastation for both sides. Iran is a founding member of the UN, ECO, NAM, OIC, and OPEC. It is a major regional and middle power, and its large reserves of fossil fuels—including the world's largest natural gas supply and the fourth largest proven oil reserves—exert considerable influence in international energy security and the world economy. Iran's rich cultural legacy is reflected in part by its 22 UNESCO World Heritage sites, the third largest number in Asia and 11th largest in the world. An historically multicultural country, it remains a pluralistic society comprising numerous ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups, the largest being Persians, Azeris, Kurds, Mazandaranis and Lurs.
