This course - originally led by Professor Dai Rees, Course Leader for MA Fashion Artefact and Tracey Kench (Specialist Technician - Accessories at LCF) - and now run by Tracey and Volker Koch (Leather Accessories Craftsman, Co-Founder of Studio Ruuger (ruuger.com) and Tutor at LCF), engages participants in traditional leather craft skills used within the fashion industry. Participants explore the historical and contemporary use of traditional British tanned leather hide and hand tools for the production of bespoke handcrafted products, within a supportive and creative educational environment. This project has recently received funding from Sir John Cass’ Foundation to deliver a year-long mentoring programme alongside the creative workshops, as well as potential employment opportunities for participants within some of our partner organisations. This project enabled the participants to explore the historical and contemporary use of traditional British tanned leather hide and hand tools for the production of bespoke handcrafted products, within a supportive and creative educational environment. When asked what was the most interesting part of the project, one participant commented: “Sharing ideas with everyone who was there. When you’re with creative, passionate people it is really good to share your ideas. It made me realized that I am not on my own.” Another answered: “Everything! All the skills and processes that we learnt were really relevant and I used them all.”
