Michael Thaler - Balancing Act: Medical Ethics and Health Care Reform

07:22
Balancing Act: Medical Ethics and Health Care Reform with Michael Thaler Wednesdays, January 27 - March 3, 2010 1-3 p.m. Revolutionary advances in molecular genetics, organ transplantation, imaging, and restorative technologies offer healthier, longer, and more productive lives. They also substantially increase the cost of health care. Focusing on biomedical ethics, which has emerged in the past 40 years out of this confrontation, we will examine its theory and practice, assumptions about patient autonomy, informed consent and fairness doctrines, and how these moral fundamentals increasingly shape, rationalize, and authorize the delivery of health care in an era of spiraling costs.

48:22
http://chicagohumanities.org - See more Chicago Humanities Festival events. Pain can generate as much laughter as joy can. When does humor in a difficult situation help, and when does it hurt? Katie Watson is a medical ethicist and attorney on the faculty of the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicines groundbreaking Medical Humanities & Bioethics Program. She is also on the faculty of The Second City Training Center. In this first-of-its-kind interdisciplinary program, Watson draws from psychology, philosophy, theater, literature, and law to consider backstage storytelling in medicine, and the ethics of humor as a coping mechanism in difficult professions.

Un-Ethical Medical Practice Offered By NHS in UK

04:55
In UK, 37,000 patients died because the nurses and doctors failed to diagnose "Sepsis". The reason this happen is because poorly trained clinicians and nurses (not trained in medical school) were allowed to diagnosis illness, advice or prescribe drugs. This is humiliating and insulting to medical profession. "A physician must have complete clinical independence in deciding upon the care of a person for whom he or she is medically responsible. The physician's fundamental role is to alleviate the distress of his or her fellow human beings, and no motive, whether personal, collective or political, shall prevail against this higher purpose." WMA also claim to encourage the international community, the National Medical Associations and fellow physicians to support, the physician and his or her family in the face of threats or reprisals resulting from a refusal to co-operate and support people in power. I raised concern about wrong doings, clinical errors that made fellow human suffer complications because some incompetent doctors and nurses were making mistakes. The video was published to show how simple mistakes can result in complications, long term problem and even death of patients who trust members of my profession. We must help, support and defend doctors who come forward to fight and defend their ethical or moral duty and not victimize, humiliate or criticize them for speaking the "TRUTH"

JLI Medicine and Morals Yeshivah Kollel Menachem

06:48
As medicine and technology rapidly advances, you confront new ethical quandaries every day. This Spring, JLI will feature a course on Jewish medical ethics. This course will offer a new perspective in a familiar field. It will foster an understanding of the Jewish approach, which involves the dynamic application of ancient Talmudic principles to modern-day dilemmas. Participants will be introduced to the traditional analysis of these issues in a classroom that supports the Rabbinic tradition of debate and discussion. Introduction to this vibrant comparative approach to ethics is sure to broaden the perspective of participants, and provide them with greater sophistication in analyzing and thinking about medical perplexities. The following is a detailed course summary of the ethical issues addressed in the course. Among the topics are: autonomy, infertility, confidentiality, organ donation, medical experimentation, and mental illness. The course will be running over 6 consecutive Tuesdays, starting 2 November 2010. For more info or to enrol email [email protected]

Why attend 'The Beginning. The End.' - Islamic Medical Ethics conference, 27th Nov 2010

06:54
**Book your tickets at: https://www.charitygiving.co.uk/fundraising/eventregister_details.asp?event=1386 Life and death are two realities of this world that foster greatly different experiences within the human being: the former being one of great joy, and the latter of immense difficulty and perhaps pain. This conference is entitled 'The Beginning. The End', and it aims to explore the ethics of healthcare at the beginning and end of life, from an Islamic perspective. We have brought together some of the leading thinkers on Islamic Medical Ethics, to discuss the application of this very difficult period to the context of healthcare in the West. We aim to address: * A background to 'Islamic Medical Ethics', and an overview of why it is important * Abortion from an Islamic perspective * Organ donation -- how does Islam see the contemporary practice of organ donation? * Euthanasia -- a view of this practice from an Islamic perspective By the end of the conference, we hope that delegates will gain an understanding of how such difficult issues are addressed from an Islamic perspective, so that when they return to their work in the hospital, or in the community, they can apply such principles to their practice. Please visit the site for more information, on: www.thebeginning-theend.org.uk
