Caspian Sea countries' summit in Iran - 16 Oct 07
He's the first Russian leader to visit Tehran since the second world war, and President Vladimir Putin's visit comes at a crucial time. Iran's standoff with the US and other world powers over its nuclear programme shows no sign of abating, and Russia has positioned itself as mediator. Just a few hours ago, Putin fired a warning shot at the US by making it clear that any use of military force in the Caspian region was unacceptable. Ayman Moheldine has this report. Amid much fan fare, pomp and even reports of an assassination plot the sitting president of Russia, Putin arrived in Iran. It is the first such visit by a sitting president since 1943 despite participating in a five-nation Caspian Sea Summit, it's the relations between the two that will be closely watched. Now, Moscow, which has had traditionally warm ties with Iran, will attempt to iron out possible differences over Tehran's nuclear energy program which it's helping to develop. And this is where the Russians are doing exactly that the Bushehr Power Plant. It's 90% complete but is still far from operational...Russian contractors say Iran hasn't made timely payments a claim it denies. Tehran has said Moscow was delaying construction because of intense western pressure. That has made some Iranians lose trust. It's not just bilateral issues that will dominate the headlines. Western powers will be watching the Putin's visit very closely for any signs there's a shift in Moscow's policies over Iran nuclear program - a matter Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says is closed. While the US, UK and France have sought tougher sanctions against Iran, Russia has traditionally shied away from criticizing its nuclear energy programme. President Putin has favored diplomacy over sanctions...but if the bilateral relations between the two countries cool down, western powers may be empowered to seek the a third round of sanctions with Russian support.

Putin denounces military threats against Iran
More at http://therealnews.com Caspian leaders agree to oppose any foreign military bases or aggression in region 2007-10-17 For the first time in sixty years, a Russian leader stood on Iranian soil. Vladimir Putin joined the leaders of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan at the conference of Caspian leaders in Tehran. On the agenda was the division of the region's vast energy resources as well as geopolitical and military control of the Caspian sea basin. As reports continue to circulate over the US desire to build an oil pipeline and military base in Azerbaijan, Russia and Iran confirmed their commitment to keeping the Caspian basin free from foreign presence and control. In the light of perceived US threats against Iran, Putin stated, "We should not even think of making use of force in this region."

Seaplane Fighters No Runways to be Destroyed dynmicpara
Seaplane fighters that can take-off and land from the water that covers over 70% of the earth's surface cannot be denied flight by cratering a runway--an excellent point brought out by this video of a newsreel from the can-do WW2 generation. However, with the Axis threat gone, the comfortable aircraft carrier racketeers began to take-over world navies and cancelled seaplane fighters, bombers and transports which pose a direct threat to their "Love Boat" clubs where the only time they have to get wet is if the foreign port-of-call girl at the bar throws a beer at them. What's lost in all this girl-in-every-port hedonistic lifestyle paid by American tax dollars is NAVAL WARFARE EXCELLENCE; that demands that aircraft air cover be DISPERSED onto many ships (Aegis destroyers, Ticonderoga cruisers, Iowa battleships) catapult-launching seaplane fighters that can be recovered from the water--not all the flying "eggs" in one huge target supercarrier "basket". http://www.geocities.com/usnavyindanger/seaplanefighters.htm The U.S. Navy had at one time the world's BEST institutional seaplane operations knowledge and equipment because it had a WAR TO WIN--German u-boats FDR ordered them to defeat and Japanese cargo ships to sink, downed airmen and sunkship sailors to rescue, commandos to insert/extract, to include how to land small seaplanes in rough seas. Bet you didn't know that, did you? The aircraft carrier racketeers don't want you to know this; they want you to think the only way to get aircraft at sea is by their bloated missile-magnet supercarriers packed with 5, 000 ready-made "volunteer" victims. Recently, an Iranian unmanned plane flew over an American supercarrier and we didn't even have a single plane in the sky to stop it because the Top Gun egomaniacs only want to fly sexy F-18 lawn darts and these cannot be flown continuously overhead. The result is an American surface Navy without ANY air cover to prevent enemy precision guided munition targeting, asking to be sunk which is what the Leo Strauss-style Marxist Neo-Cons want--another "Pearl Harbor" to con Americans into war with more "ragheads" so they can take more oil that doesn't belong to them. There was at least one marine who wasn't a self-worshipping idiot, Major General Smedley Butler who said "war is a racket". He is so right.

BP Thunder Horse
In July 2005, Thunder Horse was evacuated in the face of Hurricane Dennis. After the hurricane passed, the platform was listing badly. The cause is still unknown — inspection teams found no hull damage — yet the event boosted world oil prices because of speculation of further oil shortages. The platform was fully righted about a week after Hurricane Dennis, but BP announced that commercial production had been delayed. The platform was struck almost directly by Hurricane Katrina six weeks later, but was not heavily damaged.

Russian pres. backs Iran's nuclear program
Hello on this Tuesday, October 16, 2007. I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI Headline Update. Russian President Vladimir Putin is backing Iran's nuclear program. Putin made the comment today in Tehran where he's attending a summit on oil rights. The President said the Iranians are cooperating with Russian nuclear agencies and their main objectives are peaceful. Russia is building Iran's first nuclear power plant and has resisted moves by the U.S. and its allies to impose stronger U.N. sanctions against Tehran. China is protesting U.S. honors for the Dalai Lama. The country reacted by pulling out of an international strategy session on Iran planned by the U.S. The exiled Tibetan Buddhist leader will receive Congress' civilian honor at a ceremony tomorrow attended by President Bush. China routinely criticizes visits abroad by the Dalai Lama, who fled Tibet for India nearly fifty years ago during a failed uprising against Chinese rule. The country is considered the main holdup to U.S. plans to impose new U.N. sanctions on Iran this fall. Senator Larry Craig is defending his decision to stay in office while at the same time criticizing White House hopeful Mitt Romney. Romney removed the Republican Idaho Senator from a leading role in his campaign when it was discovered that Craig pleaded guilty to trying to solicit sex in an airport bathroom. In an interview, Craig said he'd worked hard for Romney, and in return Romney quote threw me under his campaign bus, backed up and ran me over again. A spokesman for the Republican presidential nominee said Craig left the campaign because he didn't want to be a distraction. Iraq's vice president is in Turkey today for talks to defuse the crisis along the Iraqi-Turkish border. Turkey is reportedly considering cross-border assaults against Kurdish separatist rebels in Iraq. An Iraqi government spokesman issued a statement calling for urgent dialogue between Turkey and Iraq after recent attacks in Turkey by the Kurdistan Worker's Party, or PKK. It urged Turkey not to resort to military solutions in dealing with terrorist threats that target its interests. Thanks for watching today's news headline.
