The Remembrance Rescue Project

08:45
www.therrp.org The Remembrance Rescue Project is a not-for-profit created by firefighters to restore, preserve and share Rescue 4 and Rescue 5 from 9/11 as educational tools, historical artifacts and memorials. The Project involving former FDNY Rescue 4 and Rescue 5 is an educational effort focused at society, especially youngsters who were too young to actually understand the events of September 11th and what that day means to members of the fire service and the country as a whole. The Project works with fire departments across the country to host the Rescues throughout the year. The Project coordinates with host fire departments to facilitate 9/11 educational programming, memorials and remembrance events. The Project strives to keep the memories alive of those lost on September 11th and all firefighters killed in the line of duty every year. The Project is 100% operated by firefighters from across the country volunteering their time. There are no paid members within the Remembrance Rescue Project. Donations are used for fuel, maintenance and travel costs for the Rescues. The Project is a registered charity and is awaiting approval for 501c3 status. HOW IT STARTED In July of 2011, a group of firefighters purchased former Rescue 3 from the City of New York, when it was going to be scrapped, for the purpose of creating the REMEMBRANCE RESCUE PROJECT. Unfortunately, Rescue 3 had an immediate catastrophic engine failure. The Project contacted the scrap yard where Rescue 4 had been sent and was able to swap rigs prior to its destruction. However, Rescue 4 had no cab doors, so the available parts were taken off Rescue 3 before its destruction and replaced on Rescue 4. WHAT IS THE PROJECT The project now involving former FDNY Rescue 4 and Rescue 5 is an educational, non-for-profit effort focused at society, especially youngsters who were too young to actually understand the events of September 11th and what that day means to all of us. The Remembrance Rescue Project allows the Rescues to serve as mobile memorials to Educate, Honor and Remember the events of 9/11 and all firefighters killed in the line of duty throughout the country every year. Rescue 4 and Rescue 5 are currently the only operational fire apparatus from 9/11 outside New York City. The Project is not an FDNY operation, but a national campaign for 9/11 education and remembrance for all fallen firefighters. The Project has applied for 501c3 status and funds generated are used to restore, preserve and operate the Rescues in order to facilitate education sessions, memorials and remembrance events. HOW IT WORKS The project is operated by firefighters from across the country, who generously volunteer their time. The Project is assisted by host fire departments throughout the country to coordinate educational sessions with the Rescues for local schools, community events and memorials. Rescue 4's restoration work was completed by a group of amazing volunteers in September of 2011. In the Projects' first 12 months, the Rescue was a part of a variety of community events and memorials with estimated attendances totaling 900,000 people . The Project continuously travels throughout the United States and currently has requests from host departments across the country. In December of 2011, the Project acquired the last of the Rescue trucks from 9/11, Rescue 5. Rescue 5 was brought to the Project's Chicago facility, where its restoration was completed in April of 2012. Rescue 5 is currently operated out of the Project's Chicago facility and travel throughout the Eastern states, while Rescue 4 operates out of Colorado and continues the Project's mission throughout the Western states. THE FUTURE The Project has been well received and continues to grow and develop. The Project's immediate goal is to educate children across the country with regards to the history and events of September 11th. The Project is driven to keep the remembrance alive for all fallen firefighters, while preserving the 2 surviving Rescues from 9/11 as mobile teaching tools and memorials. The Rescues will always represent the greatest sacrifice in FDNY, but they are also key artifacts to understanding and remembering the largest tragedy in modern American history. 2013 Lone Star Emmy® Winner - Public/Current Community Affairs - Feature Segment 2013 National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors - First Place Public Safety 2013 Texas Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors - Kurt Ugland Programming Impact Award

WWI Eugene Jacques Bullard - First African-American aviator to serve in a war

58:06
February 16, 2012 All Blood Runs Red author Henry Harris of Fairview discusses the extraordinary life of Eugene Bullard, the first African-American aviator to serve in a war. Through exhaustive research, Harris uncovered a treasure trove of long-forgotten documents about this American hero denied the opportunity to serve in the US military. Bullard's motto was "Do not accept defeat if you are doing the right thing." Harris' quest to learn more about Eugene Bullard began in 2004 while visiting a museum in Gunther, Alabama. Here, he recognized the valuable, yet overlooked, contributions of Bullard and realized that more information was needed. After six years of diligent research, Harris composed an extensive biography that is presented as an interview with Bullard. Eugene Jacques Bullard was born in Columbus, Georgia, in 1894, to William and Josephine Bullard. As a teenager, Eugene emigrated to the United Kingdom and worked as a boxer and in a music hall. Later, he traveled to France and joined the elite French Foreign Legion. After being wounded in battles around the area of Verdun, Bullard was awarded the distinguished Croix de Guerre. After recovering from dreadful wounds, he flew in the Lafayette Flying Corps, participating in at least 20 missions. With the entry of the United States into World War One in 1917, the United States Air Service recruited Americans serving the Lafayette Flying Corps. Although Bullard passed all examinations, black pilots were not permitted in the U.S. Air Service. As a result, he continued to serve in the French military until the armistice. After the War, Bullard remained in Paris and eventually operated a restaurant frequented by notables such as Josephine Baker, Louis Armstrong and Langston Hughes. After the outbreak of World War II, Nazi officers dined at the restaurant and discussed military strategy, unaware that the black owner was fluent in German. Bullard secretly relayed valuable intelligence to Allied forces. After this war, Bullard returned to the United States. He worked in New York's Rockefeller Center as an elevator operator and lived meagerly. At his funeral in 1961, no representative from the U.S. military attended the service, but Bullard was buried with military honors by French officers in the French war veterans section of Flushing Cemetery in the New York City. Before his death, he uttered to a retired French officer who was assisting him, "This is beautiful on the other side."

TERRACourt - First LEED Green Gold Certified Home in Collin County, Texas

08:08
http://montgomeryfarm.com/TerraCourtHome/ TERRACourt Home sets new standard for energy efficiency and green construction The award-winning Montgomery Farm conservation development now has the first LEED Gold certified home in Collin County and one of the most energy efficient homes in the nation. The newly completed TERRACourt Home has received the rare LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council as well as one of the best HERS ratings for energy efficiency ever awarded by Energy Star. Designed by the award-winning architect Graham Greene of Ogelsby-Greene Architects and built by Sustainable Structures of Texas, the 6,500-square-foot home received an almost unheard of score of 49 on the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) performance testing. Based on a 100-point scale where a lower rating is more energy efficient, a score of 85 is considered an Energy Star home. The 49 score puts TERRACourt Home among the top 1 percent for energy efficient homes nationwide. "Not only have we built one of the nation's most energy efficient homes, we built a beautiful home and we did it without using any special technology or tricks," said Lee Hall, president of Sustainable Structures who oversaw construction of the house. "Most homes that come close to the energy efficiency ratings we achieved either use special technology, are built partially underground or use unusual materials," continued Hall. "This is a house that anyone would want to call home. It is a testament to what can be achieved with the best materials, old-world craftsmanship and good science." LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is an internationally-recognized green building certification system. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), it promotes sustainable building and development practices through a suite of performance rating systems which recognize projects implementing strategies for improved environmental impact, greater energy efficiency and healthy air. All making a better environment for living. According to information from the USGBC, by receiving the LEED Gold rating, TERRACourt Home becomes: * the first "Gold" home in Collin County * the highest rated LEED home in Collin County * the first LEED home in Allen * one of on 50 LEED Home private projects of any rating in Dallas-Fort Worth * one of only 24 LEED "Gold" or higher projects in Dallas-Fort Worth * one of only 57 LEED "Gold" or higher homes in Texas * one of only 1,920 LEED "Gold" or higher homes in the nation From the slate and metal roof to the stone facade to the arbors made from wood and steel, TERRACourt Home features a tranquil and natural beauty, with clean lines and crisp detailing. Extensive use of glass, hardwood flooring and an open footprint create a dramatic interior that is flexible and accommodating to a variety of personalities. State-of-the-art control features built into the facade allow living areas to fill with natural light. The TERRACourt Home recognition is just the latest for Montgomery Farm. The meticulously planned Montgomery Farm conservation community is also home to Watters Creek, the state's first LEED-Certified Mixed-Use Shopping Center and has received the following honors: * Keep Texas Beautiful Award * "CLIDE (Celebrating Leadership in Development Excellence) Award" - North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) * "Project of the Year" - Texas chapter of the American Planning Association * "Millennium Award" - Allen Economic Development Corporation * "Public Project of the Year" -- Bethany Road, awarded by the Texas Public Works Association. * "Texas Excellence in Landscaping Award" - Texas Nursery and Landscape Association Montgomery Farm also is known for its efforts to preserve and grow native trees through its unique Montgomery Urban Tree Farm operations. About Montgomery Farm: Montgomery Farm is a 500-acre development in Allen, Texas, that has integrated more than 250 acres of permanent green space into pedestrian-friendly residential and commercial neighborhoods, creating an oasis of meadows and natural preserves.

01:19:50
March 19, 2015 Who are the first Americans? In the 1920s and 30s, discoveries made near Clovis, NM suggested a prehistoric Paleo-Indian culture that dates back nearly 13,200 years ago. But new evidence may actually point to Texas as a possible origin. Archaeologist Wilson W. "Dub" Crook has found that may just change the way we see history.

Chitlin' Circuit and the Road to Rock 'N' Roll

01:03:43
Friday, 21 October 2011 The road to Rock 'n' Roll was paved by the numerous African-American musicians and promoters of the 1930s and '40s who were forced to perform in venues that were safe for them during this time of intense segregation.  This informal network of juke joints and clubs gave us artists such as Louis Jordan, T-Bone Walker and Wynonie Harris. Acclaimed journalist Preston Lauterbach discusses his exciting book The Chitlin' Circuit and the Road to Rock 'N' Roll. Because of Lauterbach's documentation of the fascinating stories of these talented yet often forgotten musicians, American musical history is more complete.  In recognition of Lauterbach's accomplishment, he is also a featured author at the 2011 Texas Book Festival in Austin, Texas

Civilized Tribe - History of the Choctaw

01:26:14
For centuries, the Choctaw pursued peaceful agricultural endeavors in the southeastern United States. The Choctaw tribe contributed soldiers to the U.S. in every major war since the Northwest Indian War (1785-1795) and the War of 1812. Choctaw Code Talkers provided crucial intelligence by communicating in the Choctaw language during World War I and World War II, dumbfounding the enemy. Deemed one of the five “Civilized Tribes” because they adopted many colonial practices, including many converting to Christianity, the Choctaw were forcibly relocated to Indian Territory in 1830 by the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek. Representing the Choctaw nation, Ryan Spring will discusses the History of the Choctaw up to the Trail of Tears at the Allen Public Library. A GIS/GPS specialist for the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma Historic Preservation Department, Spring received his bachelor’s in anthropology from the University of Arkansas in 2011. He was hired by the tribe to implement GIS (Geographic Information System) and GPS (Global Positioning System) technology to aid in protecting sites important to the Choctaw people, creating cultural maps for education, and conducting Choctaw cultural presentations, research and advisement. “Being a member of the Choctaw Nation means I have the duty to respect my ancestors, do my best to aid my family and tribe, and to make the future culturally and environmentally sustainable for future generations of Choctaw people,” Spring said. Spring is enrolled at Southeastern Oklahoma State University to earn his master’s in Native American Leadership. He enjoys playing Choctaw stickball for the Choctaw Nation’s stickball team as well as helping coach stickball to youth and adults in his community.

A Short History of Allen, Texas

11:53
Prior to the arrival of the European and American immigrants into the Allen area, Caddo and Comanche Indian tribes inhabited the region. The Indian tribes migrated westward as the early settlers entered the area. The tribes were eventually removed to the Indian territory to the north of the Red River. One of the last known conflicts between the early settlers and the Indians took place in 1844 along Rowlett Creek near the existing railroad. A historic marker along SH 5 near Rowlett Creek commemorates the event. Immigrants of European descent began arriving into the Allen area in the early 1840's in search of free land, traveling the Texas Road and the Central National Road constructed by the Republic of Texas. A stage line ran from Bonham through McKinney to Allen and Plano, crossing Rowlett Creek where SH 5 now crosses. Allen was part of the Peter's Colony Land Grant from the Republic of Texas to the Texas Emigration & Land Company The Houston and Texas Central Railroad (H&TC), constructed through Allen in 1872, laid out the original township of Allen. The H&TC was acquired by J.P. Morgan & Company in1877 and by the Southern Pacific in 1883. In 1918, the H&TC erected a combination freight/passenger depot in the Allen Central Business District. The first train robbery in Texas took place in Allen on February 22, 1878, when Sam Bass and his associates pillaged the train. Allen was a short ride from their hideouts in the Elm Trinity brush lands In 1907 the Texas Traction Company (Interurban) purchased right-of-way on the west side of the H&TC main line track to construct the Interurban line through Allen as a stop on its route from Denison to Dallas (completed in 1908). In 1915 a devastating fire destroyed most of the business district between the Interurban tracts and the railroad. The Interurban closed in 1948 and the population of Allen declined to 400 in 1950. The town was officially incorporated in 1953. Home Rule Status was adopted in 1979 with a Council/Manager form of government. The construction of US 75 in 1960 had a similar impact on Allen's future as the railroad almost a century before. In the 1980's, Developmental Learning Materials and InteCom, Inc. relocated to Allen, leading the way for further corporate startups and relocations The Allen Heritage Guild was established in 1996 to assure tomorrow's heritage by recording past and current milestones for the city.
