Benefits and risks of Drugs

03:01
Better informed patients mean better therapy decisions. Understand the benefits and risks of your medication and talk to your doctor. Whatever the choice – make it an informed one! Your doctor prescribed a drug. It should help treat or prevent an illness. But now, back home, you take the time to read the comprehensive package insert and doubts creep in … should I really take it? What about all these side effects mentioned? And two tablets a day really seems a lot, maybe one will do? Your friend swears by this medicine from the drug store, no question what she would advise! The website www.patients.bayer.com provides you with a lot of useful information on the benefits and risks of drugs and how drugs are researched, developed, and continuously monitored and evaluated for efficacy and tolerability. This way, Bayer wants to help you make an informed decision together with your doctor or pharmacist. When doing so, make sure the decision is based on facts, not rumors: your health is your most precious asset. www.pharma.bayer.com

Patents - Things you probably didn't know about patents

01:43
3 criteria have to be fulfilled by an invention to receive patent protection for 20 years: inventive step, industrial application, novelty. User Rights With a patent in place, user rights can be clearly defined and licensed. Teaming up with governmental institutions, organizations and academic scientist becomes easier. A big help when researching new treatments for unmet medical needs. National authorities It depends on the date of application and the regulations of national authorities when and for how long the patent is valid. Once approved the Orphan Drug Status allows inventors to keep sales rights exclusive for a little longer. An exception to reduce the financial risk and encourage the work on treatments for rare disorders. The length of protection depends on the country and region. www.pharma.bayer.com

Combining treatments can double outcomes compared to singular therapies. But finding the correct combination for each unique tumor out of billions of possibilities is impossible with today’s methods, which rely on existing medical evidence that simply doesn’t exist for most cancers. Turbine solves this by simulating how cancer actually works on the molecular level. Its patent-pending artificial intelligence then identifies treatment combinations that will most likely kill the disease, running over a million simulated clinical trials each day. Turbine’s founders have over 20 years combined researching artificial intelligence, network medicine and molecular biology at the Semmelweis University of Budapest. http://turbine.hu/

Improving Clinical Trials for Heart Failure Patients

01:41
Medical device-derived biomarkers are a promising area in the process of R&D digitization. Those biomarkers are patient-generated physiological and behavioral measures collected with connected digital devices such as wearables. They allow scientists to collect information, e.g. on the safety and efficacy of treatments in clinical studies, earlier and more comprehensively. Frank Kramer, Director Biomarker Strategist at Bayer: "In the REALIsM-HF study, we use high-tech sensor patches in heart failure patients that allow continuous monitoring of their physical activity and vital medical parameters. These parameters and their development in the course of the trial support us in assessing the health condition of a patient and evaluating the efficacy of the new active substance."
