Lance Corporal Josh Leakey awarded VC for valour

03:26
The PARA who singlehandedly prevented considerable loss of life during an assault into a Taliban stronghold in Afghanistan is to be awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military honour, it has been announced today with the publication of the operational honours and awards list. Lance Corporal Josh Leakey, of The Parachute Regiment, was deployed in Afghanistan as a member of a task force conducting operations to disrupt insurgent safe-havens and protect the main operating base in Helmand Province during the summer of 2013. It was whilst on a combined UK/US assault led by the US Marine Corps to disrupt a key insurgent group on 22 August 2013 that the force, having dismounted from their helicopters, came under accurate machine gun and rocket propelled grenade fire. “On this day, things just felt different,” said Josh, recalling the events of the day. “The enemy were more determined, even when air support was around, they stood and they fought, which was fairly uncommon. And, thoughts going through my mind on that day were, let’s do this right. There’s a man wounded, we need to get this guy sorted, and also stop more people getting wounded.” Josh is not the first recipient of the VC in his family, as his second cousin twice removed, Sergeant Nigel Gray Leakey, was posthumously recognised with the honour in November 1945 during the Second World War. Today When The Guns Fall Silent | Remembrance | British Army

02:12
To mark the 100th anniversary of Armistice, the British Army has released a video titled, 'Today When The Guns Fall Silent'. The short film tells the story of a British soldier whose family members have served in conflicts over the last 100 years. The different conflicts and eras are represented by the seamless change in uniform worn by the soldier. The changes in uniform on the soldier also demonstrates the evolution of the British Army over the last 100 years. Throughout the video a poem is recited which delivers the narrative for this emotive film. The video was filmed at Brookwood Military Cemetery, near Pirbright. Brookwood is owned and run by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC); it was established as the First World War ended, and then extended for the burial of Second World War service personnel. Those buried there represent all branches of service, and all six of the CWGC’s member governments: Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom. British Army musicians flash mob: "All Together Now" in Victoria Square, Birmingham, 5 Nov 2014

03:11
British Army musicians have entertained unsuspecting passers-by with a flash mob performance in Birmingham's City Centre. The Band of the Royal Corps of Signals were playing It’s A Long Way To Tipperary in Victoria Square when they were joined by musicians from the Band of the King’s Division, and the tune turned to Keep the Home Fires Burning. The combined bands then played The Farm’s, All Together Now. As the flash mob unfolded, members of the Shawbury Military Wives Choir, Cosford Military Wives Choir and the Midlands Military Community Choir joined in with a surprise sing-along. In support of The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, there was a distinctly red theme to the unexpected event. Choir members wore something red to match their poppies. The flash mob was made possible with funding from the Armed Forces Community Covenant grant fund. The fund aims to encourage local communities and the Armed Forces Community to help and support each other. The Corps of Army Music is the largest employer of professional musicians in the UK. Tribute to Aretha Franklin | Welsh Guards | British Army

Crowds attending the Changing of the Guards Ceremony at Buckingham Palace this morning were treated to more than the usual respect by the troops from the British Army’s Household Division. The Band of the Welsh Guards are world famous for their musical versatility and professional performance and this morning paid tribute to another musical icon and one that has been of huge influence and inspiration to our musicians – Aretha Franklin, whose funeral was being held in Detroit 3,748 miles away, at the same time of the Queen’s Guard Change. In the Army Respect for others underpins all that we do, so there was only one tune that would do for today’s ceremony: the 1967 Aretha Franklin hit “R.E.S.P.E.C.T.” a declaration from a strong confident woman who knows that she has everything. Army medic gains commendation for giving care under extreme danger

01:58
Private Abbie Martin, of the Royal Army Medical Corps, was supporting a company operation in the Green Zone to the southeast of a patrol base when insurgents initiated an ambush from multiple firing points. Whilst under fire, Abbie -- then 19 -- headed across open ground with the platoon sergeant to treat a guardsman who had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. Due to the severity of his wounds, Abbie remained with the guardsman throughout the casualty evacuation, selflessly exposing herself to enemy fire in order to ensure that the clinical handover to the evacuating helicopter crew gave him the best possible chances of survival. Throughout each action, Abbie was steadfast, putting her patients before herself despite the dangers. She gains recognition with a Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service.
