How to Find Fulfilling Work

05:13
The key to finding fulfilling work is to think a lot, analyse one's fears, understand the market, reflect on capitalism. Find out more by attending our one-day workshop "Finding a Fulfilling Job": https://goo.gl/LUB7V8 If you like our films, take a look at our full shop too: https://goo.gl/o51jgI FURTHER READING “The idea that work might be fulfilling rather than just painfully necessary is a strikingly recent invention. Nowadays, in the prosperous world, we don’t only expect to obtain money through labour, we also, to a greater or lesser extent, expect to find meaning and satisfaction. It’s a big ask and explains why so many of us have career crises...” You can read more on this and many other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org: https://goo.gl/32WsQN MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/vihOFc More films on CAPITALISM in our playlist below: http://bit.ly/TSOLcapitalism Do you speak a different language to English? PHILOSOPHY - Nietzsche

The first bit should sound like ‘Knee’, the second like ‘cher’: Knee – cher. Friedrich Nietzsche was born in 1844 in a quiet village in the eastern part of Germany, where – for generations – his forefathers had been pastors. He did exceptionally well at school and university; and so excelled at ancient Greek (a very prestigious subject, at the time) that he was made a professor at the University of Basel when still only in his mid-twenties…” You can read more on this and many other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org at this link: https://goo.gl/OzSFva MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/nIrvB0 Watch more films on PHILOSOPHY in our playlist: http://bit.ly/1gfQCEu Do you speak a different language to English? PHILOSOPHY - Epicurus

Why We Go Off People Who Like Us

03:08
Though we long for certain people to like us, an odd thing can happen once they do. What is the origin of our strange coolness towards those who show enthusiasm for us? It can be immensely hard not to feel that those who offer us love are in some way weak, mistaken, needy, craven or defective – and to be left a little queasy by their warmth, repulsed by their wish to hold us and to caress our necks; by their tender words and their capacity to find minor things about us endearing..." PHILOSOPHY - Sartre

Jean-Paul Sartre explored the problems and joys of being fundamentally free. Existentialism, the belief system with which he is associated, considers the anguish of freedom. If you like our films, take a look at our shop (we ship worldwide): https://goo.gl/uItUUR FURTHER READING “Jean-Paul Sartre was born in 1905. His father, a navy captain, died when he was a baby – and he grew up extremely close to his mother until she remarried, much to his regret, when he was twelve. Sartre spent most of his life in Paris, where he often went to cafes on the Left Bank and sat on benches in the Jardin du Luxembourg. He had a strabismus, a wandering eye, and wore distinctive, heavy glasses. He was awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize for literature, but refused it on the grounds that the award was capitalist and bourgeois. He was very short (five feet three inches) and frequently described himself as ugly. He wore his hair vigorously brushed back. When he died in 1980 (aged 74), 50,000 people accompanied his coffin through the streets of Paris...” You can read more on this and other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org at this link: https://goo.gl/KWw7ma MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/nI9ntx Watch more films on PHILOSOPHY in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLphilosophy Do you speak a different language to English? A Reason Not to Worry What Others Think

We spend a little too much time worrying about how we must appear in the minds of others. Should We Play It Cool When We Like Someone?

05:11
We tend to be told, from a young age, that the very worst thing to do when we like someone is to seem too direct or keen. Showing our interest is, apparently, fatal to the chances of a relationship. But is playing it cool always so necessary? And are spontaneous desire and enthusiasm always so taboo? The School of Life puts forward an original theory of how to play things wisely at the start. Why Avoidant and Anxious Partners Find It Hard to Split Up

04:38
Fractious couples are often made up of one party who is 'avoidant' (hiding their intimacy needs) and one who is 'anxious' (nagging and pressuring counter productively for their intimacy needs to be met). These couples go through cycles that run from cosiness to fury to sulk to blow up to cosiness. Why do these cycles happen and why are they so hard to break? What might be a better way forward? There is, in such couplings, a constant game of push and pull. The anxiously attached party typically complains – more or less loudly – that their partner is not responsive enough: they accuse them of being emotionally distant, withholding, cold and perhaps physically uninterested too. The avoidant lover, for their part, stays relatively quiet but in their more fed-up moments, complains that the anxious party is far too demanding, possibly ‘mad’ and, as they put it pejoratively, ‘needy’. One person seems to want far too much, the other far too little.” MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Visit us in person at our London HQ: https://bit.ly/2QrwC4v Watch more films on RELATIONSHIPS in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLrelationships You can submit translations and transcripts on all of our videos here: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?c=UC7IcJI8PUf5Z3zKxnZvTBog&tab=2 Find out how more here: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6054623?hl=en-GB SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Download our App: https://bit.ly/2NWdRJJ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: Direction & Illustration- Natalia Ramos http://www.nataliarama.com #TheSchoolOfLife #AttachmentStyles #Relationships

What Is Your Attachment Style?

06:39
Attachment theory refers to a set of ideas formulated by psychologists in the 1960s that gives us an exceptionally useful guide to how we behave in relationships. Knowing whether we are secure, anxious or avoidant in our attachment patterns gives us a vocabulary with which to get on top of some very tricky dynamics and helps us grow into more predictable and more joyful companions in love. Honest Communication

How to Handle Crushes

03:14
Secret crushes are going on pretty much all the time (in our minds), driving us to ecstasy and quite a bit of pain too. If you like our films, take a look at our shop (we ship worldwide): https://goo.gl/L8VoOF FURTHER READING “You are introduced to someone at a conference. They look nice and you have a brief chat about the theme of the keynote speaker. But already, partly because of the slope of their neck and a lilt in their accent, you have reached an overwhelming conclusion. Or, you sit down in the carriage – and there, diagonally opposite you – is someone you cannot stop looking at for the rest of a journey across miles of darkening countryside. You know nothing concrete about them. You are going only by what their appearance suggests. You note that they have slipped a finger into a book (The Food of the Middle East), that their nails are bitten raw, that they have a thin leather strap around their left wrist and that they are squinting a touch short-sightedly at the map above the door. And that is enough to convince you. Another day, coming out of the supermarket, amidst a throng of people, you catch sight of a face for no longer than eight seconds and yet here too, you feel the same overwhelming certainty – and, subsequently, a bittersweet sadness at their disappearance in the anonymous crowd…” You can read more on this and many other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org: https://goo.gl/HhQ4zW MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/inv5UP More films on RELASIONSHIPS in our playlist below: http://bit.ly/TSOLrelationships Do you speak a different language to English? Self Compassion

It’s all too easy to be extremely tough on ourselves; we need – at points – to get better at self-compassion. Here is an exercise in how to lessen the voices of self-flagellation. Why Stoicism Matters

The Cure for Unrequited Love

The real cruelty of unrequited love is that we don’t get to know our beloveds well enough to find out their flaws – and therefore to lose interest in them gradually. Our sorrow is accompanied by a certainty that if only the elusive being would return our smiles, come for dinner or marry us, we would know bliss. Epochal happiness seems tantalisingly close, wholly real and yet maddeningly out of reach. At such moments, we are often counselled to try to forget the beloved. We should – given their lack of interest – try to think of something or someone else. Yet this kindness is deeply misguided.
